Kia ora Koutou, A good start to Term 4 has seen some fantastic achievements for our students over the term break. As said in my last newsletter, I hope that many of our senior students used this time productively to consolidate their understanding and guarantee success in the upcoming NCEA external exams. Term 4 is always a whirlwind of activity with exams, prizegivings, portfolios being finalized and everyone working towards successful academic outcomes. It is great to see all our students back, refreshed and focused for the term ahead and we look forward to working with them in the fine summer months coming up.
Nga mihi

___________________________________________________________________________ SWIMMING SUCCESS Over the school holidays two of our RLHS swimmers competed as part of the Swim Rotorua Team at the NZ Short Couse Open Championships in Auckland. For Samuel Trass (13yrs) his national short course debut was very successful with him winning the bronze medal in the 200 metres butterfly with a best time. Samuel also took two more top 10 placings with a cracking 30.19 seconds in the sprint 50 butterfly (6th place) and another best time in the 100 butterfly (5th place). Samuel also stepped up to be part of the Swim Rotorua open age men’s Medley and freestyle relays teams. Their top result was 14th in the 400 Medley relay. Samuel Trass (far right) – bronze medal in the boys 13 years 200 metres butterfly
Skye Cox is a seasoned competitor at this level, but this year was competing in the tough 17-18 year age group as a 17 year old. Skye continued her excellent recent from, placing an awesome 5th in 200 backstroke and 8th in 100 freestyle. Skye’s 200 backstroke was fast enough to qualify her for the open age C final which she won, dropping 3 seconds and placing her the 13th fastest woman in New Zealand in the event! Huge congratulations! Skye also joined the women’s Swim Rotorua relay teams which placed 9th in NZ in the 400 Medley and Freestyle Relays, and 10th in the 200 freestyle relay.
Awesome results very well done to you both! ___________________________________________________________________________ MOUNTAIN BIKE CHAMPS Our Year 9 student, Milla Phipps had great results winning both the Enduro and XC race in the under 14’s, at the National Secondary Schools MTB Chams in Dunedin 4 – 6 October 2019.

___________________________________________________________________________ PHOTOGRAPHY SUCCESS AT THE RINGA TOI EXHIBITION Excerpt from the Daily Post Tuesday 8 October
Year 12 student Ben Balle (Tuhourangi) has returned home to Rotorua after living in Auckland. It was his first year taking the photography class but he said being included in the Ringa Toi Exhibition has opened his eyes to a future in photography.
“It has really shown me my potential. I never considered it growing up, but I was into wildlife photography so I decided to give it a go this year. It’s that feeling of returning home after a long time. This place keeps me grounded and I wanted to capture that environment” Balle’s photo series was initially a candid shot but on reflection, he wanted to capture his feelings while being in his happy place.
Congratulations to our Year 12 student, Ben Balle, for is success at the Ringa Toi National Exhibition.
Brilliant work, very well done. __________________________________________________________________________ HILLARY OUTDOORS TRIP By Katherine Goodrick On the 6th of October 19 brave Year 10 students arrived at RLHS to attend the Hillary Outdoors centre for a week long camp. The students had to apply to attend the camp and the focus was on developing leadership skills. They were split into two groups for the activities during the trip. On Monday both groups did some hiking and also completed teamwork challenges. In addition to this they also completed a high ropes course or went on a flying fox. Tuesday was caving day, both groups got to experience 3
caving and glowworms in a beautiful part of New Zealand. Wednesday and Thursday were the big days as students completed an overnight out in the bush. One group went up to the snow and then hiked down to their campsite for the night while the other group canoed to an island where they camped. On their way back to main camp on Thursday they completed some more ropes course/abseiling activities. Finally, at night they completed team challenges which incited much laughter. Friday was the day of departure but first they had to compete against the other groups at the centre. They had to get everyone across the pool without touching the water. Finally the students performed a haka for the instructors, Liandra Allen and Stuart Lyall, who had supported them all week. Students had a great time and would like to thank everyone who helped fundraise and organise this amazing opportunity.
