Kia ora Koutou, We held our Investiture Assembly on Tuesday this week. Recognising and congratulating all our students who were endorsed with NCEA Excellence and Merit was a pleasure and I am very proud of the hard work and dedication the students have put in to this. Also, thank you to our teaching staff who have put in a huge effort in helping and supporting these students to achieve. We also had the chance to once again congratulate our 2022 school leaders, Student Rep to the Board and Peer Support Leaders who received their badges. I look forward to working with them throughout the year to continue to develop our school. (further details on pages 2 - 5). Just a reminder that we have our individual school photo catch up next week Wednesday 6 April for those students who could not make our first time slot. Have a lovely weekend. Ngā mihi,

Jon Ward, Principal / Tumuaki 1

NEWS FROM OUR TEACHERS ___________________________________________________________________________ GEOGRAPHY TONGARIRO TRIP by Ms S Beaumont-Gill The Geography Department has been extremely busy over the past few weeks. Year 13 Geo finally made it to Tongariro National Park and had three days of adventure. On the first day they designed and carried out their own research on plants in the volcanic environment and sampled in Rangipo Desert. There was an optional extra activity of "gumboot throwing" of which Logan was the champion. On the second day, the students were up bright and early at 5:15am ready for a safety briefing with our guide, Dave. The weather was perfect so we decided to walk the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. As always, the Devils Staircase was punishing but I am proud to say that everyone helped and encouraged each other right up to the Red Crater. The descent down to the emerald lakes was entertaining as we navigated our way through the scoria. When we finally reached Ketatahi there was an audible sigh of relief and then a round of applause for Dave who had completed his 100th Tongariro Alpine Crossing. I would like to say a huge THANK YOU to all the parents and students for their support organising a trip under COVID. A special mention goes to RaD Car Hire for our very spacious rental vans and Jono at The Supension Lab for being a great driving and tramping buddy.

___________________________________________________________________________ OUR TALENTED DRAMA STUDENTS Year 9 Performing Arts have been devising drama and choreographing dances to show how they use Manaatikanga in their everyday life. Well done – the students have been awesome😊

___________________________________________________________________________ FANTASTIC TOURISM TRIP On Friday the Yr12 Tourism classes spent a busy day learning about the local industry from some very informative speakers at four local operators. We visited Te Puia, Pullman Hotel, Skyline and Zorb. Students were able to experience being a tourist, hear about the impact COVID has had, and also hear the positive plans for future growth in the industry. A lovely day with a fantastic bunch of students, thanks to the operators that hosted us.

___________________________________________________________________________ YEAR 9 NUMERACY TESTING All Year 9 students have now been numeracy tested. These results are being used to inform teachers in numeracy based subjects. This means students can be scaffolded or extended. Some students will be further supported within the Accelerated Numeracy Programme which runs as intensive small groups for 8 hours a week and as an extra teacher within some junior mainstream Maths classes. RLHS is very appreciative for the support of the Ngati Whakaue Education Endowment Trust Fund, in collaboration with RECT, who fund a significant portion of the expenses for this programme each year. If your student is a part of the more intensive numeracy programme a letter will be sent home. Interested whanau/caregivers who are concerned about their student's level of numeracy are welcome to ask about their student's results by e-mailing kellyk@rotorualakes.school.nz
