WHANAU SUPPORT GROUP and FRIENDS OF THE SCHOOL (FOTS) We want to renew our Whanau Support Group and Friends of the School (FOTS) Group. Deputy Principal Pani McLean and HOD Maori Taumata Soloman will lead the Whanau Support Group and Deputy Principal Ross Dunn will lead the Friends of the School Group. Other teaching staff as well as B.O.T members will attend meetings so these groups can become consultative forums where the school can highlight current initiatives and present possible future initiatives for feedback and feed forward from Parents / Whanau. At this point we are thinking we could meet about twice per term.

The aim of these groups is not fund raising but to provide a forum where Whanau / Parents and the school can share ideas etc. about the educational needs of our Community and the students at RLHS. If you are interested in joining either of these groups, please contact Pani McLean, mcleanp@rotorualakes.school.nz or Ross Dunn, dunnr@rotorualakes.school.nz Thank you to those people who have previously responded. You will be contacted shortly regarding a meeting time.

NEWS & EVENTS MODEL UNITED NATIONS ASSEMBLY Two teams participating in the Model United Nations Assembly in the Tauranga Council Chambers on Saturday 26th May. The resolution that was debated throughout the day was the question of Global Health and Wellbeing. Leroy Nurkka, Caitlin Dalziel and Emma Jenkin were delegates from the USA and Natasha Miller, Jet Taylor and Eraia Staunton were representing India. After observing for a while our teams grew in confidence and participated in voting and discussions well, USA even having their voting rights suspended for not agreeing to a lifting of embargo on Cuba! Throughout the day approx 60 students from schools all over the Bay of Plenty discussed international affairs and followed UN procedure to resolve 3 resolutions. A positive learning day for all!

_________________________________________________________________________ STUDENT FEE STATEMENTS Please note that the students’ fee statements have been handed out to students. Please check their bags for invoices. Just a reminder that student fees need to be paid for students to be eligible to attend the school ball. We would appreciate prompt payment. Thank you. _______________________________________________________________________________

GENERAL ACTIVITIY DONATION Each year the school seeks from parents a $70 donation per student, (this amount is included in the school fees account). This donation can be claimed as a charitable donation through Inland Revenue. At Rotorua Lakes High School we spend the donation on first aid supplies, school nurse, and to support co-curricular activities. It is unfortunate that we need to seek charitable support from parents / whanau for so-called ‘free education’ but government grants to schools do not cover a lot of extras.

Thank you very much to the parents and whanau who pay this voluntary donation. _________________________________________________________________________ FROM THE ATTENDANCE ADVISOR  Please use this number for texting your child’s absence: 027 765 4957. Thank you.

This programme is run by some Rotary Districts in Australia and all Districts in New Zealand. It is designed for 14 – 16 year old students to experience a true “exchange” with a family in the other country. In 2019 Australian students arrive in New Zealand and attend school with their matched student during Term 2. Both students then return to Australia at the end of June and attend the Australian student’s school during Term 3. In 2019 it is hoped, there will be 60 students from Australia and New Zealand involved in the programme. In the past ten years more than 1600 students have participated in this life-changing experience. One of the aims of Rotary International throughout the world is to bring about a better understanding between people. Student Exchanges are one of the best ways to help achieve this and also develop life-long friendships between individual students, families and the people they meet during the exchange. Students are matched, where possible, with students of similar interest in the other country. You are invited to visit their comprehensive website: www.ranzse.com for Expression of Interest Forms, Application Forms and dates

The Sunrise Rotary Club, Rotorua sponsors this exchange at $500.00 per student Phone Bob Gardner 07 350 3214, if you have any questions

WINTER MENUS

SPORTS EQUESTRIAN On May 19th and 20th, Rotorua Lakes High School sent one rider, Emma Jackson, to represent their equestrian team at the National Secondary School Horse Trials in Taupo. Emma (Year 13) completed all three phases across both days. Saturday was dressage and show jumping, and after cross country on Sunday Emma ended up in the top 35 of almost 70 riders from across the North Island. 

CONGRATULATIONS and well done Emma!

NETBALL Rotorua Netball have recently held their trials for Rotorua Rep teams and we are pleased to congratulate Puaawai Bennett and Morgan Mahaki for being selected in the U17 Squad. They have 4 one-day tournaments coming up along with Nationals from the 16 - 19th July in Palmerston North.  We wish them all the best. _________________________________________________________________________________________

GIRLS HOCKEY The Girls 1st X1 Hockey girls team, played really well with 7 girls down. They lost 4-8 to Girls High. Players of the day were: Shelby Cuff, Rebekah Edhouse, Riley Lambert. The Girls 2nd X1 Hockey team unfortunately didn't fare that well, losing to JPC 16-0. But they are showing some good skills. Never give up guys. Player of the day was: Bianca Fafeita. _________________________________________________________________________________________

BOYS HOCKEY A cold night in Taupo for our game against Tauhara, who currently are sitting top of the grade. We knew they would be tough! The boys played hard and strong despite missing players to a school trip and injury. Unfortunately through a couple of "ïnteresting"calls, which the opposition scored two direct goals from, we were in a difficult situation. The boys fought hard defensively including Kody Mayes our goalie, putting his body on the line in many situations. They played hard on attack but just couldn't score! We kept our heads up throughout the game and look forward to a rematch! Player of the Day Reece Dawson.

GIRLS RUGBY Our girls travelled to Paengaroa on Monday, they were very excited to be playing other Bay of Plenty teams. We arrived with ample time to prepare and warm-up for their first game against Otumoetai. Playing 12 aside, Otumoetai scored early getting 2 tries on us, both scored by their #12, our girls hit back with Hinerau Mark running in a try and then Tatyana Waitoa crashed over the line to even the score going into halftime. Halftime score 10-10. The girls were feeling pretty good and started the second half off with Anahera Harrod running through tacklers to score our 3rd try. Matariki Mikaere-Rikihana had a good run to score 4th try and then Otumoetai ran in their 3rd try. Awhina Yorke sealed the game when she crossed the line for our 5th try making the final score 25-15. Unfortunately Ruatoki were unable to field a team due to two tangihanga in the valley, therefore a default win to us and a scratch match was organised for our second game against Mt Maunganui (division one team) which saw a reversal of our game score against Otumoetai. Game score 15-25 to Mt Maunganui. Our try- scorers were Zoe Pitman, Anahera Harrod and Jade Waraki.

 Our girls train on Wednesdays and Fridays from 3.20pm to 5.00pm and we are looking for Sponsors for our Girls Rugby Team

 If you are Interested, Please contact Ele on 021 353 267. Thank you!
