Kia ora Koutou, We are reaching that ‘crunch’ time of year with Senior Prizegiving next Tuesday evening and our Seniors going on study leave and starting their NCEA external exams. I wish them all the best in their endeavours. I had the great pleasure of witnessing the Interhouse Haka Competition this Friday. Each house took their turn to present the challenge before the whole school came together in a mass Haka event. The house haka’s were inspiring with every group showing a massive amount of pride in their performance. I thank both staff and student leaders who have driven this event. I was saddened to hear that this week a previous and well respected staff member of the school has passed away. Brenda Currie was a dedicated support staff member and, as a school, we pass on our deepest sympathies to her Whanau. In my last newsletter I finished with “Go the All Blacks”. Sadly this did not work out too well for us! I have now had to revert to my second string team, England. I won’t wish them luck as this may have an ill effect! I look forward to seeing many of you at Senior Prizegiving on Tuesday evening at 7 pm. Enjoy a warm and relaxing weekend.

Nga mihi

___________________________________________________________________________ YEAR 13 LEAVERS DINNER The Annual RLHS Year 13 Leavers Dinner will be held this year at the Rydges Hotel, Fenton Street on Thursday 5 December 2019. Parents and family are invited to attend. The evening will begin with drinks and a buffet meal, followed by a celebration of the achievements of all Year 13 students. This is a semi-formal occasion. A very tidy standard of dress is required (e.g. no jeans, t-shirts, jandals etc) and appropriate behavior is expected – no whistling, calling out etc. Students attending are under our normal school rules including no smoking and no alcohol. The only concession to these rules is those students who are with their parents or caregivers may have alcohol with their meal if purchased by their parents and are of legal age. No intoxicated persons will be admitted to the function. The school regards this dinner as a family celebration. Students must be accompanied by their parents/caregivers and are unable to purchase individual tickets for themselves. It is possible for students 2

to be accompanied by another Lakes High student’s parent/caregiver but permission must be sought and approved before such a ticket can be bought. See Ms Howard. Names of all persons attending must be listed on the return section of the form. Current students of RLHS who are not Year 13 may not attend. Doors open 7 pm, seated for dinner 7.30 pm. Tickets are on sale from the school at student reception at a cost of $57 per person and must be shown at the door upon entry. Tickets cannot be charged to student accounts. ___________________________________________________________________________ PARKING AT ROTORUA LAKES HIGH SCHOOL We appreciate your cooperation with the following parking regulations at the school: Please do not drive into the school to drop off or pick up your child at peak times as this causes traffic jams. Please arrange with your child to meet further down the road. Please do not park at the bus stop near the school main gate between 3.15 pm and 3.45 pm. It is illegal to park or briefly stop as this is a designated bus area only which is regularly enforced by the Police and tickets have been issued before. Always single park (double parking causes accidents and traffic jams). We thank you for your help and cooperation.

___________________________________________________________________________ The Asthma Nurse (Lakes Region) will again be attending Rotorua Lakes High School to support and educate asthmatic teens around their asthma. We offer a free one on one assessment service where we assess all newly enrolled students who have asthma, as well as those who might be having issues managing their asthma. We seek to improve our regions asthma outcomes by educating people around their asthma so they can better understand their condition and how best to manage it. We also aim to keep students in school and reduce school absenteeism caused from poorly controlled asthma. We make sure the students are on the right medications, and use good asthma inhaler technique and help the student to find ways for them to best manage their asthma individually. Please inform the school nurse (smithr@rotorualakes.school.nz or 3459502) if you do not wish your child to be seen by the Asthma NZ nurse. To find out more about us please visit our website at https://www.asthma.org.nz/ Or contact Nurse Educator Amanda Vercoe, Phone: 021 0844 1635 Email: Rotorua@asthma.org.nz

___________________________________________________________________________ NZQA Students should be logging into their area on the nzqa site (www.nzqa.govt.nz) regularly to check their entries for externals, current results and how they link to Pathways and also they can see their personalised exam timetable. All they need is their NSN (this is on all the tracking reports and can be accessed through the KAMAR and Schoolpoint portals).

We strongly encourage students to do this often! 3
