DEPARTMENT NEWS _________________________________________________________________________________ SENIOR VISUAL ARTS EXTERNAL ASSESSMENT PORTFOLIO DUE DATES All Senior Visual Arts students are working diligently towards completion of their portfolios for their external assessments in Sculpture, Design, Photography and Painting. The following final summative due dates for Levels 1, 2, and 3 are as follows. Please note that the four Arts teachers, Mr. Flitton, Mrs. Carlan-Riddell, Ms. Howard, and Mrs. Malcolm will have their own formative due dates in term three, and they will be communicating with parents and caregivers directly about them. This is because the different disciplines have particular processes in photographing, printing or finishing the works. All work must be reviewed thoroughly with their teachers, before fixing it securely to the boards for assessment. If the students miss the summative due date there is no late entry or resubmission opportunity, unless they submit in the following academic year. Please make sure your son or daughter is clear on the requirements about their assessments. The folios are worth 12 credits at Level 1-2, and 14 at Level 3. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact your son or daughters' teachers (----@rotorualakes.school.nz).  

Level 2 Sculpture, Photography, Design and Painting: (All teachers) Folio boards must be presented to the auditorium no later than 9 am on October 24th. Level 3 Sculpture, Photography, Design and Painting: All folios are couriered to NZQA for assessment on Thursday November 2. A courier pick up will be available from school at 10 am with pre-payment to the school office (price to be confirmed). NORTH ISLAND SECONDARY SCHOOL SKI COMPETITION By Paloma Gea The North Island Secondary School Ski Competition is an annual three day event at Mt Ruapehu. We competed in both slalom and dual slalom races against other schools from all across the North Island. I have been lucky enough to be on the Lakes High team every year, and it has always been a really fun trip as well as a chance to measure yourself against other competitive skiers our age. This year was especially great to see how many juniors were coming up and competing with us, and seeing how well everyone was ranking in their age groups. It's been amazing watching the numbers and interest grow every year, and I hope this is something that the juniors can bring forward as the seniors on the team leave school.

NI Secondary Schools snowboarding champs: Around 200 competitors from 45 schools competed and despite the weather they managed to squeeze in 2 days of racing. Both our students did very well in the snowboarding slalom races - with Pascal Gea finishing 37th out of the boys, and Paloma Gea finishing 16th out of the girls.

Congratulations to our two very talented students.

MOUNTAIN BIKING NATIONALS By Hamish Dodd With such great mountain biking talent here at Lakes High, it was no surprise that our students rode fantastically at the North Island Secondary Schools Cross Country MTB champs - though the results still surpassed many expectations! Over the course of the racing, not one, but two RLHS students were crowned North Island Champions! The first event raced by a RLHS student was the under 15 males, with Dylan Walton taking a break from his usual single speed madness to bring home a strong 8th in a large field of 28 students. Not just a locals derby, this prestigious event drew competitors from as far north as KeriKeri and as far south as Wellington. It wasn’t all smooth sailing for Dylan, with a Tour-de-France style pileup causing quite a spectacle at the start of the race. “Unfortunately I got caught up in a start line crash which put me near the back of the field from the start.” Dylan proved his resilience and powered back to well within the top third of the field regardless. As he put it: “That’s racing.” The remaining three RLHS team members were set to start in quick succession, with Under 20 male Hamish Dodd starting just minutes ahead of the merged start wave of the Under 17 and Under 20 females, competed by Ruby Ryan and Caitlin Dalziel respectively. Hamish would be racing 5 laps of the flowy 4.5km course; Caitlin, 4; and Ruby, 3. The under 20 male race went off with a blistering start, riders hit speeds in excess of 50 kph on the beginning sprint and still had the endurance to maintain such high intensity for the next full hour. “I knew the start would be pretty important on such a narrow track - there aren’t many passing opportunities,” said Hamish, “so I really pinned the first few climbs”. Though managing to shake most of the competition through this tactic, he was still tailed by George Furniss of Auckland’s Macleans College up until the final stages of the race. “I was feeling good, and so eased off for most of the fourth lap to conserve some energy for lap 5. As soon as I neared the start of the final lap I gave it everything I had, and managed to increase my lead from a second to a full minute over about 5km or so.” This large margin firmly cemented Hamish as the 2017 North Island Secondary School Under 20 Male Champion.

At the same time, the female races were being completed just as fiercely by Ruby and Caitlin. Ruby flew out of the start gate, and from there made her victory undoubtable - powering through the field to establish a lead of over a minute after just one lap, and even outclassed the winning Under 20 female in doing so! “The race was high tempo all race where I led from pretty much the start.” Ruby continued to reign supreme over the next two laps, increasing her lead further each time to finish an impressive 2:02 minutes afront second place. “It was super cool to race on a different track and I’m stoked with my performance!” Rightfully stoked, Ruby was awarded with the title of 2017 North Island Secondary School Under 17 Female Champion. Though these titles definitely didn’t come easily, some of the toughest competition of the day won't be found in the lap times or winning margins. Caitlin battled just as hard, or perhaps even harder, to power through the pain and finish very respectably for someone still in the midst of recovering from sickness. Competing with her own willpower, the tricky conditions and the unforgiving track, Caitlin prevailed through it all and finished in 4th, just a few minutes behind her opponents. Few riders can claim to have a “sick” race in both senses of the word, but Caitlin proved that it'll take more than that to keep her down. In her words: “I'm really proud of the team's effort, sadly for me I just didn't have what it took on the day but I'm now more motivated to come back better." However, the adrenaline packed day was not over yet. After some scientific recovery fuel of power bars, electrolyte fluid and chocolate cake, the RLHS team was gearing up again for the relay event. Over the course of 2 hours, school teams of 3 would compete to see how many laps of a heart pounding 1.8km course they could complete, with the winning team completing the most. With the same team camaraderie that lead to many shouts of encouragement between riders, sometimes even during their own races, The RLHS team lined up in the transition to begin the 2 hours of power. Hamish lead out the first lap, and after a small crash on the clay soil, handed over the next lap to Dylan who kept things more ‘right-way-up’. Dylan’s single speed experience of rapid high intensity effort tied in perfectly with the short course, and before long he handed over the rein/handlebars to Ruby who capped off the first round in style. 21 laps and 20 humorous transponder anklet transfers later, the 2 hour mark rolled by, and the RLHS team were stoked to have finished 2nd in the Mixed Under 20 category, just 1 lap off the winners! Overall, they also placed 9th out of 26 teams, some of which were from schools of over 2500 students! 9 hours after the first event began the day of racing finally came to an end - but it wouldn't have been possible without lots of help. Heaps of behind the scenes help with registration, race HQ setup and organization came from Miss Beaumont Gill, as well as lots of cheering! Plenty of parents also helped out with getting everyone to the events and race ready, so huge ups to them too! With the amazing results we achieved, I’m sure it was all worth it

RED STAG TIMBER – WAIPA MILL - ROTORUA THINKING ABOUT LEAVING SCHOOL? WE HAVE TRAINEE ROLES NOW AVAILABLE! Located 5 minutes south of Rotorua CBD, Red Stag Timber is an industry leader when it comes to producing quality timber products. The Company operates New Zealand’s largest sawmill, and is a well-established and successful business. We have invested heavily over the past 10yrs, with a new modern Sawmill recently commissioned, and further expansion of our Secondary Processing operations underway. We are seeking keen school leavers who are eager to learn more about the timber industry and progress through a timber industry qualification. Our training policy includes a 2 year bond from the completion of the qualification, so a long-term commitment is sought to match these opportunities. 2018 Red Stag Cadets - The Red Stag Cadet programme involves 12 months of rotational duties to learn broader aspects of timber processing. This is followed by an agreed training pathway to achieve a L4 Timber Industry qualification. Work duties during the rotation will include timber handling, recording, wrapping, strapping and the safe operation of machinery at various work stations. Commencing in January 2018, hours of work are Monday to Thursday 5.00am – 3.40pm with occasional overtime on a Friday if required. Timber Machinist & Remanufacturing Apprentices. The Timber Machinist and Remanufacturing apprenticeship pathways lead to a Level 4 industry trade qualification over 3 years in either Timber Machining or Finger Jointing. This option would suit those who are mechanically minded, with a particular interest in wood manufacturing. Our apprentices will also work on various shifts including Afternoon Shift and Weekend Shift. Flexibility with work days/hours will therefore be required. We are looking to start our new Trainees as soon as possible, with interviews held in November. Summer R&D Assistant (Fixed Term) We also have a fixed term dayshift role available over summer working with our Research & Development team. Duties will involve handling and testing timber, basic reporting and keeping data records. This role will be starting early December and run through to end January, working Monday to Friday 8hrs/day. Our preferred candidates for the above opportunities will have achieved a minimum L2 NCEA pass including Maths and English and a related Technical subject. They will also have a reliable attendance record, excellent communication skills and be physically fit to meet the demands of the role. Confident computer skills would be an advantage. Full pre-employment medical examination and drug screening applies. Application forms are available here: http://www.redstagtimber.co.nz/people/careers/ Applications including a brief CV, NCEA record of learning and most recent school attendance record should be received by 4.00pm Friday 10th November 2017 via email to Maureen Smith, HR/HS Advisor maureen.smith@redstagtimber.co.nz For any further information required please contact Melissa Bennett, People & Safety Manager Ph. FROM THE STUDY LINK TEAM Sign up for information - registration page Last year we launched our "Sign up for info" form on the StudyLink website. We wanted to make it easy for high-school students to register for regular updates from us on things like when to apply and what documents to send us. It was a great success with nearly 2,000 students registering. This year's form is now up and running. There's a link on the StudyLink homepage and it takes seconds to complete. We would really appreciate your support again this year in encouraging your Year 13 students to register. Sign up for information Students should also check out StudyLink's website to think about what it will cost to live and study. The tools and calculators will help them get a picture of the financial choices they will face and how they will manage as they move into tertiary study
