_________________________________________________________________________ SUCCESS AT THE SWIMMING NATIONALS Last week two year 9 students, Samuel Trass and Stella Weston competed at the NZ Division II Swimming Competition in Dunedin as part of the Swim Rotorua team. Both were in the very competitive 12 & 13 year age group which included Div I swimmers. They raced with guts and determination. Samuel dropped 13 seconds to go from 9th seed to win the GOLD in the final of the 200 butterfly in a sensational race which he won by less than half a second. He followed this up winning joint SILVER in the 100 butterfly less than half a second off the gold. Samuel was also a very valuable member of the Swim Rotorua boys relay team and helped them to secure a fourth-place in the 400 metres medley relay. This was a great achievement as three of the team were 12 or 13 and they were competing in the open age relay. Stella Weston raced personal best times in every one of her 7 events. She took a whopping 1 minute 10 seconds off her 1500 freestyle to place 5th in the 12-13 age group and she was the 7th fastest 13 year old girl in 100 and 200 breaststroke. Both swimmers met qualifying times for the National Age Group Champs and both contributed to the team points to help Swim Rotorua's small team of eight athlete’s place 12th in New Zealand out of nearly 100 clubs. Thanks to Southern Trust for their support of the team.
