Kia ora Koutou, As you will be aware, this year we continue to develop a major focus on sport and activity for our students. With the results from the recent Mountain Bike Nationals, our students have shown that RLHS is one of the top schools nationally in this sport. Some great achievements. (results on page 4).

Our novice rowers have had a busy week at the Maadi Cup at Lake Karapiro, with some very positive results. This was a great competition and experience for our rowers. Thanks to Tom and Glen from Rotorua Rowing Club for supporting our crews as well as the awesome parents being there to make it all happen. (further details on page 4).

Our Waka Ama crews were also participating in the Waka Ama Nationals, our boys coming 2nd in the semis but just missing out on a finals spot based on the fastest finished.

Our Girls competed in the plate final 250m – a strong performance for a crew that has had little experience paddling together.

We are looking forward to our Athletics Day on Thursday 1 April. (further details on page 3).

STUDENT SUCCESSES ___________________________________________________________________________ YEAR 10 CAMP On Wednesday 17th March 70 students and 8 staff headed to Okataina for the Annual Year 10 Camp.

Students were treated to beautiful weather in stunning surroundings. The first day was spent down at the lake making rafts, swimming, volleyball, observing trout and trying out the kayaks. Students also spent the first day practicing the school haka.

The second day consisted of a range of different team building activities, viewing the glow worms andlearning about our environment. Students spent the three days competing in their houses for points towards the house competition.

There were four events worth points. The ultimate challenge, raft building, haka and technology challenge. Okareka House won. Well done! The last day involved games, tidying up and a walk to the waterfall. Well done to all students who embraced the opportunities at camp.

The students were wonderful and we appreciate the time given up by staff to put on such a successful camp. Ms Kairaoi, Mrs Hodge, Ms Smets, Ms Hartigan, Mrs Gainsford, Ms Nelson, Mr Harris and Mr English. Not forgetting Ms Kairaoi for her outstanding ability to organize the camp. Well done to all!

___________________________________________________________________________ DONOVAN BIXLEY VISITS OUR YEAR 10 STUDENTS Talented children’s book author and illustrator Donovan Bixley visited Lakes High school on Tuesday this week. He spent the morning with the student writers group and working with year Junior English students. Then in the afternoon Donovan worked with year 10 Art, showing them how he begins designing the characters for his picture books. The staff and students thoroughly enjoyed listening to this incredibly inspiring author!

NEWS FROM OUR TEACHERS __________________________________________________________________________ ATHLETICS DAY Our Athletics Day is Thursday 1st April. All students will attempt each field event (for house participation points) and track events are optional. Students will leave their field event to race, when called. Students are to come to school in house colours - juniors in PE gear or costume, seniors in house colours. There will be best dressed costume prizes. Bring a drink bottle, shoes, snack, hat, sunblock. There will also be a BBQ please bring money.

___________________________________________________________________________ MATHS HOMEWORK CENTRE Each WEDNESDAY from 3.30 – 4.15 in A11 All students are Welcome - Please bring a snack and remember this is a space where all students can come and complete homework, get some help if needed or simply have some time to do the mahi.

___________________________________________________________________________ HOCKEY This year Rotorua Hockey is having a strong drive to combat negative behaviours towards umpires and officials by both players and supporters. All schools have been asked to arrange a presentation time, with an expectation that all players must attend. We strongly ask that supporters are present too. Our presentation has been arranged for Monday 12th @ 6pm in the school Auditorium. If a player is unable to attend they MUST see Mrs Gainsford prior to the event with a strong reason.

___________________________________________________________________________ GIRLS HOCKEY RLHS Girls Hockey trials are Wednesday 31st on the turf at school. Starts at 3.30 to 5pm. All girls trialing need to bring mouth guards, shin pads and a drink bottle. Please be on time. If you cannot make this trail you will need to contact Mrs. Gainsford.

___________________________________________________________________________ BOYS HOCKEY Thank you to all the boys that trialed for hockey on Monday 22 March, and to the parent supporters. Boys Hockey trials continue this Monday 4-5.30pm at the SCHOOL TURF. All trialists expected to be there with correct gear. Any issues please contact Ms Sturme.

Site Visit - see what goes on behind the doors of Kilwell. This is a large company who specialize in hunting and fishing gear; from manufacturing and designing various sporting equipment, to customer services, warehouse opportunities and engineering skills.
