Dear Parents / Caregivers
I am greatly looking forward to getting to know you and the Rotorua Lakes High wider community. I moved with my wife to NZ in 2002 and taught in Christchurch for fifteen years before moving north to become Principal at Tararua College, near Palmerston North. Our family of four children, three boys and a girl aged 9, 10, 10 and 12 is always lively. Added to that two dogs and three cats and life is busy. Over the past ten or so years I have been involved in developing and identifying how we need to adapt our teaching and learning approaches to meet the needs of our students in a rapidly changing world. I look forward to working with the team at Lakes High School to ensure we continue to offer an exceptional education for all our students. As we move forwards, I want to consult widely to develop a strong understanding of how we can continue to offer the best opportunities and support for our community. I am proud to lead such a dedicated and professional staff and work with students to drive their passion, enthusiasm and engagement to deliver pathways that meet all their needs. Nga mihi

The camp focuses on life skills and leadership throughout the week and is an amazing opportunity for our students. Sulphur City Lions sponsored the students and we cannot thank them enough for this.
Here are the student’s thoughts. At Bluelight leadership camp we did all sorts of fun activities like white water rafting, rock ropes and hiking. During the week that I stayed at Blue Light I enjoyed meeting new people the most because everyone there was so friendly. The bond that was created with everyone was incredible it had been like I had known them for years, I am proud to call those people that once were strangers to me, my friends now. I learnt how to express my ideas in better ways and be more confident in myself. I was taught to push myself to my limits and never give up. I can also now look for the bright side in situations and also solve them safely. I also learnt that it's ok to be different than others. The most challenging part at the camp was to get out of your comfort zone. We all had to conquer our fears and push ourselves to succeed. I found it difficult to do some of the activities like rafting because I have a fear of going out onto rivers but then I pushed myself to my limits to not be afraid and thought of how much fun it would be in the end. I believe that other people should take this opportunity to become a better leader and learn how to lead in the right way. This will help them out in the future and it's worth the experience. Thank you to Sulphur City Lions for sponsoring me to be able to take this opportunity. Cristobal Sanzana-Leal I enjoyed the rafting experience the most because it was my own river and I felt safe, not only that but it was an amazing experience and I was grateful to be able to do that. It was a great experience because I learnt that no matter where you come from being in a team isn’t about your differences but more about how you can bring those differences together and make something great happen. However, there were also scary challenges for us. The Rock'n Ropes was challenging because I have a huge fear of heights and being high up supported by a harness and a rope all I had to do was trust the people who I’d only just met the day before with my safety! Not only did I learn new things I also did new things, and met new people and gained new skills and from these things I am now a better person/leader/friend than when I first walked into the camp and I am forever grateful for that experience. Thank you very much for giving me this chance, I loved it. Kahurangi Dewes-Green.

___________________________________________________________________________ SCHOLARSHIPS Thursday 1st and Friday 2nd August (Week 2) we will be running workshops for Year 13's to apply for scholarships, universities, polytechs etc. To help us help you.... you should be organising your documentation now. Most applications require proof of identity and citizenship/residency. You should find your birth certificates and/or 4
passports, any citizenship or residency documents (if you weren't born in NZ). Some applications will require proof of bank accounts - you can usually print this from your internet banking. Some photocopies can be verified by the school principal, others will need to be verified by a JP, so be prepared to visit the library or courthouse to have documents verified. You may also want to consider someone in the community who could be a referee for you - perhaps a manager at your work or a sports coach or someone you have done volunteer work for. Don't forget to ask them nicely rather than surprise them! DONT PANIC! This is a smooth process for everyone when we all work together. We are so proud of our scholarship recipients from last year who had their school and community achievements recognised. We are looking forward to the 2019 cohort being just as successful!
___________________________________________________________________________ SUBJECT CHOICE FOR 2020 During the first two weeks of Term 3 students will be making choices about subjects for next year. There is an option evening for students and whanau on Wednesday 31 July 4-6pm. Head of Departments and Teachers In Charge will be available to talk about what their department offers. Students have also been issued with a guide to help in this process. This year we are moving away from the paper process of selection and moving to an online process. We are using Schoolpoint (the same one we used for parent interviews). Students should make their selections after planning their course and talking with their teachers and whanau. We ask that parents “OK” their child’s choices through their login in to Schoolpoint (instructions below). HoD’s will confirm the student has made the prerequisites or is likely to make the prerequisites of the course they have chosen. At the option evening we will have available some devices for families to use. If you need any help logging into or using Schoolpoint please contact Mrs Allen 345 6124 ext 221.

WELL DONE, great results ___________________________________________________________________________ BOYS HOCKEY After a two week break the boys showed they hadn't lost any of their skills or determination when we played Whakarewa last night. A tough first half saw the boys show both strong defensive and attacking force. A goal scored in the last 2 mins of the half by the opposition saw the coach Owen doing a strong pep talk. The boys came out firing with Hunter Thompson scoring a beautiful goal to equalise. The second half was difficult with calls not going our way, but the boys battled on. 2 goals scored against us in the last 5 mins sealed our fate of a loss. Player of the day Joel Roper.
