Dear Parents/Caregivers _________________________________________________________________________ ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL HILLARY OUTDOORS CAMP The last Sunday of the holidays 30 Year 10 students embarked on the journey of a lifetime – The Hillary Outdoors Camp. Three wonderful parents had volunteered their time to go, and so with trepidation the group ventured forth. Students were encouraged to push themselves outside of their comfort zones both mentally and physically. They were able to experience mountain climbing, snow sliding, abseiling, caving, tramping and sleeping outdoors. It was great to see the development and growth of students over the course of the week, and a relief to see them still smiling when they arrived back in the carpark on Friday. A huge thanks to Stuart Lyall, Leslie Eggleston and Rama Chadwick who attended the trip. Also we would like to thank NZCT for helping to fund this amazing opportunity for students.
2019 YEAR 10 TRIP TO HILARY OUTDOORS The Hillary Outdoors Camp is an opportunity given to Year 10 students at Rotorua Lakes High School. Next year it will be happening in the last week of the Sept/Oct school holidays, starting Sunday 6th October
until
Friday 11th October. _________________________________________________________________________ INVITE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE POWHIRI – DUKE & DUCHESS OF SUSSEX A small group of 10 Maori students from Puketawhero have been selected to participate in the Powhiri for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and meet the pair in person, who will be touring New Zealand next week. The Powhiri will take place at Te Papaiouru marae on Wednesday the 31st of October at 11.25am. Our students will join in with senior kapa haka groups from Te Arawa and a handful of other schools to welcome the Duke and the Duchess to Rotorua.
This is a huge honour for our school and we have no doubt our tamariki will enjoy the moment and do Rotorua Lakes High School proud. ________________________________________________________________________ FROM THE BOT The following policies are currently up for review. NEWS & EVENTS _________________________________________________________________________ HELP DONATE TO FIJIAN VILLAGERS As many already know, the Lakes High U15 netball team will be travelling to Fiji in December to compete at the Fiji International Netball tournament. Along with playing in this 4 day tournament, we are also sponsoring a local Fijian team to attend this tournament. We will meet the team we sponsor and hangout with them over the 4 days of the tournament. This will be a very cool experience. Although Fiji is a destination for many international tourists and sports teams, very rarely do they go past the resorts, beautiful beaches and tourist visiting spots. 35% of Fijians live below the national poverty line which means that they are not able to afford basic necessities like food, clothing and adequate shelter. Many live barely above it. During our trip we will be visiting a local village and will spend time with the local villagers. So when we do visit, we will be seeing conditions that we are not used to. During this visit, we would like to take gifts to give to the villagers. We would like to take stationery for the school kids, along with 2nd hand clothes and toiletries to be shared amongst the families. We would like to offer our school community the opportunity to help donate to this cause. If you or your family have any unused clothes, or outgrown them, and would like to donate them to a Fijian family - please drop them off at the school. There will be a box in the main reception where they can be left. Also, if you would like to buy in your next shop at the supermarket, an extra a bar of soap, a deodorant, toothpaste, a toothbrush or another toiletry item and donate that would be awesome too. Every little bit helps and a big thank you in advance to those who will donate an item or two to this fantastic cause. We can’t wait to see the smiles on the faces of these families when they receive these donations, and we will make sure we take heaps of photos to share with you. Thanks Kimiora Insley
_________________________________________________________________________ YEAR 13 LEAVERS DINNER The Annual RLHS Year 13 Leavers Dinner will be held this year at the Rydges Hotel, Fenton Street on Thursday 6 December 2018. Parents and family are invited to attend. The evening will begin with drinks and a buffet meal, followed by a celebration of the achievements of all Year 13 students. This is a semi-formal occasion. A very tidy standard of dress is required (e.g. no jeans, t-shirts, jandals etc) and appropriate behavior is expected – no whistling, calling out etc. Students attending are under our normal school rules including no smoking and no alcohol. The only concession to these rules is those students who are with their parents or caregivers. They may have alcohol with their meal if purchased by their parents and are of legal age. No intoxicated persons will be admitted to the function. The school regards this dinner as a family celebration. Students must be accompanied by their parents/caregivers and are unable to purchase individual tickets for themselves. It is possible for students to be accompanied by another Lakes High student’s parent/caregiver but permission must be sought and approved before such a ticket can be bought. See Ms Howard. Names of all persons attending must be listed on the return section of this form. Current students of RLHS who are not Year 13 may not attend. Doors open 7 pm, seated for dinner 7.30 pm.
Tickets are on sale from the school at student reception at a cost of $55 per person and must be shown at the door upon entry. Tickets cannot be charged to student accounts. Tickets must be purchased before
