CHALKBOARD From the Principal - P. 1 - 2 News – P. 2 - 5 Sport – P. 5 - 6 Careers/Gateway - P. 6 - 8 Notice Board – P. 8 Contact Us – P. 9 Our Sponsors – P. 9

Kia ora Koutou, As I am writing this newsletter we are in the middle of our athletics day, with some great sportsmanship being shown. I know of one sporting record that has been broken, the girls 1500 which has stood since 1971. An outstanding achievement. In the coming weeks I would like to engage in some community consultation around various topics to support developing the positive culture of our school. I will announce further information about this as time progresses. As every school in New Zealand, (if not the world), finds from time to time, we have issues arising that we need to address. One of these which I wish to raise with our community, is that a group of our students who are hanging out in the alley way at the end of Porikapa and Wharanui Road. They are there most mornings before school. We are concerned that these students are at risk of engaging in some significant negative activities and are keen to support these students to develop a more positive culture. We are looking for active support from our parents and community to talk to our students about: a) Keeping away from this location, and; b) Removing themselves from groups engaging in negative activities I will be contacting a number of parents and community members over the coming week to call a hui to develop a collective approach to supporting these students. There has recently been much media coverage of the school and I would like to thank members of our community for the support that has been shown. My goal is to ensure that we move forward in a way that reflects the needs and aspirations of our community, wherever this may take us. I look forward to some robust conversations and appreciate that all parties have perspectives that need to be considered. No matter what your perspective, I would hope that everyone is shown respect and courtesy in the discussions. Thank you once again for entrusting your children to our care. We enjoy working with them in growing their learning journey and appreciate your support. Nga mihi Jon Ward Principal / Tumuaki wardj@rotorualakes.school.nz

www.matesanddates.co.nz Our School has been selected to participate in a new ACC school-based healthy relationships programme called Mates & Dates. 2

ACC has developed Mates & Dates to help to prevent dating and sexual violence. This is important given that 1 in 5 female and 1 in 10 male secondary students say they have had unwanted sexual contact or been made to do unwanted sexual acts. 57% of those who experience this tell no one. Working with young people is one of the most effective ways of preventing sexual violence. ACC has worked closely with the Ministry of Education to ensure that the programme aligns with the curriculum and is appropriate to our young people’s learning needs. Mates & Dates aims to teach young people how to: have healthy relationships based on respect, negotiation and consent identify inappropriate behaviour get help if they, or someone they know, are in an unhealthy relationship including unhealthy friendships safely intervene in situations that could lead to harm. Mates & Dates is a strengths-based programme that believes all young people are able act with respect towards their mates, dates, and family in all interactions. The programme taught in each year group will be appropriate for that age group. It will be taught by specialist sexual violence prevention programme facilitators over five one hour sessions. Mates & Dates is not a sex education programme, but will include materials and discussions about relationship violence, (this includes friends and whanau), consent, dating and the impact of pornography. No explicit materials will be shown.

___________________________________________________________________________ SWIMMING SPORTS Swimming Sports was held last Thursday at the Aquatic Centre. Congratulations to all the students who attended and participated either by swimming in the Competitive Events, taking part in the Fun Events or supporting others that did. Swimming Sports is always a highlight of the school calendar and it was awesome to celebrate the successes of our school swimmers. Students behaved really well, House Captains and Deputies did a great job motivating their houses and the lunchtime free swim time showed the inclusive culture that our school has, with hundreds of students creating a massive whirlpool and joining in in aqua aerobics! A big thank you to the Heads of House for organising this day and allowing students to create memories. Overall the winning house was Okareka with a HUGE margin over the other three houses. SPORTS ___________________________________________________________________________ RLHS CRICKET TEAM (Central Lakes) The Rotorua Lakes High School Cricket Team, playing as Central Lakes, had their first game of the new season last Saturday against Aquinas College in Tauranga. This is the first time that Rotorua Lakes High has had a team in the BOP competition for many years.

Standing (L to R): Harry Cheesman, Adam Skidmore, Joel Sutton, Matthew Parker, Sam Cheesman, Logan Agnew, Cody Managh, Max Phillips, Sam Reid. Kneeling: Isaac Field, Kaspa Grunwell

The Aquinas College team were sent into bat for the first 40 over innings and set a challenging target of 220 for our team to chase. Standout bowlers were Harry Cheesman (25/0 from 7 overs), Joel Sutton (39/1 from 7 overs) and Logan Agnew (23/1 from 5 overs).

Our batting had a tentative start, but by drinks we were still in the chase although a few wickets down. We were unfortunately unable to sustain the attack and were all out after 30 overs with 130 runs on the board. Harry Cheesman was also our star batsman this week with 24 runs to his name. Great sportsmanship and camaraderie were shown by the whole team and it was awesome to see Rotorua Lakes High back in the BOP cricket league after their prolonged hiatus. We’re all looking forward to another great game this weekend. If anyone is keen on cricket and not yet in a team, we are looking for a few extra players. If interested, please call Jo Cheesman on 027 5664157, or join us for training at the Lakes High cricket nets on any Tuesday after school.
