Dear Parents/Caregivers

FROM THE PRINCIPAL Our annual Sports Prizegiving was held on Thursday 20 September in the D C Price Auditorium and it was an excellent occasion to celebrate our talented, successful and dedicated sporting students in their chosen sports. We were also able to thank and congratulate our wonderful coaches and managers for their commitment and unfailing support which has ensured an extremely successful sporting year. Our guest speaker was Lisa Adams, ex-student and currently NZ Para athlete, who spoke of her passion and involvement in sport. Lisa’s life mantra is practice makes permanent! Nothing is perfect. Lisa spoke of the challenges of being diagnosed with cerebal palsey at a young age and her family being told she would never walk. Lisa spoke of the awesome support she got from her family and her time at Lakes High School. She sent her gratitude to the teachers for their support and mentoring. Her message was very much ‘don’t give up’. Lisa’s goal is to be part of the NZ Olympic Shot Put Team 2020. She is currently ranked 1st in NZ and 3rd in the world.

We thank Lisa, for what was, a truly inspiring speech.

A special thank you to the following people: Ms Lisa McFarlane, our Sports Co-ordinator for her brilliant organisation of this event with Whaea Pani Mc Lean, and to the support staff, Liandra Allen, Debbie McLeod & Paula Short who assisted her with administration and help at the event. Our wonderful groundsman Butch Tarei, Brent George, the girls rugby, Kyra Mita and Keidon Himiona for their awesome help setting up and also for the following day in ensuring everything was put safely away. Our M.C. – Ross Dunn, the 4 Head prefects; Tangaroa Yorke, Kairangi Cox, Maria Trass and Leroy Nurkka did a great job for the evening. Mary Webster and her staff: Marie Van Leeuwen, Helen Gainsford and the Senior Food Technology students who prepared and organised the Auditorium for the event and did a fantastic job – thank you. The meal served was outstanding and this event gives the students an excellent opportunity to practice.

Finally, congratulations to all our wonderful sporting students: EXCELLENCE AWARD Mita Excellence in Sport

HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS WEEK From Thursday 20 to Wednesday 26 September saw the first Mental Health Awareness week held at RLHS. Our main aim was to promote movement, music and laughter. We had a great turn out of our students who enjoyed all of the activities. Our staff worked very hard to ensure the activities were fun and insightful and involved all students at all levels. Needless to say, the sponge throwing proved very popular and the students showed great skill at the cake baking event. Thank you to all staff who were instrumental in helping with this week and the Year 13 students for their involvement and

wonderful Haka. We were delighted and encouraged with the enthusiastic response from students and staff alike and will be sure to involve our school next year. A HUGE THANK YOU TO EVERYONE - From:

12 SPORTS SCIENCE The Year 12 Sports Science class have been studying how biophysical principles relate to the learning of a skill. Over the past 3 weeks they have been applying their knowledge at Owhata Primary by teaching groups of students passing and catching skills. Not only have they gained a good understanding of the biophysical principles, they have developed leadership and management skills and had a great deal of fun doing so. They have done a fantastic job and the feedback from the teachers at Owhata has been awesome, and that their students have shown great improvement. So well done to the Year 12 students and a big thank you to Matua Shaun Douglas and his team at Owhata.

VISUAL ARTS INCLUDING PHOTOGRAPHY HOLIDAY TUTORIALS Visual Arts Holiday tutorials are running next Monday, Tuesday and

Wednesday (1/2/3 October) 9 - 3pm. These tutorials will be vital for students of Level 2 Painting and Design. Level 1 MMP students who need to finish off their internal folder should also attend.

Note: Students need to attend for the whole day, in order for staff to be responsible for their safety. For this reason they need to bring lunch and snacks along them. _______________________________________________________________________________________

FROM THE MUSIC DEPARTMENT On Sunday 23 September we were very fortunate to take 15 lucky students to see their very first opera in Auckland. A tragic love story - La Bohème is an Italian opera composed by Giacomo Puccini. Thank you to NZ Opera and the Four Winds Foundation for organising the day – the students had a great day out!
