CORRECTIONS There were two errors in last week’s newsletter for which we apologise. We correct the spelling of Minarapa (Mina) Mitai-Ngatai’s name, grandfather of our Hockey Coach Owen Mitai. The Ngati Whakaue Chief of Te Arawa, Pukaki, adorns the 20 cent coin of New Zealand, not the 50 cent coin.
___________________________________________________________________________ ASSESSMENTS The following assessments have been set down to take place within the next two weeks. There may be times where, due to unforeseen circumstances, changes will need to occur. This will be done in consultation with the class(es) concerned.

"Down on the Farm". Dave is a farmer trying to make a living in a time when sustainability and looking after the environment are paramount. Not all of them turn out well and when the bank manager has an overseas buyer, the pressure mounts. Will Dave keep his farm? What are his girlfriend’s and friend’s “ideas”?

INTERHOUSE SPORTS DAY -
Great Interhouse Pics next page
A cold and frosty start to Wednesday did not stop the hearty participating in the annual Lakes High School Inter House Sports day. Despite the ice, hundreds of students turned out to compete in Kiorahi, Flags, Touch, Soccer, Basketball, Netball, Handball, Chess, Pictionary, Trivial Pursuit, Battleships and Kahoot. A fine sunny day followed and the day culminated in a hilarious round of tug of war competitions between various levels of students and staff.
A big thank you to all the staff who made the day run smoothly and the House Captains for organising their part. An awesome effort again by the Heads of House for an awesome event.
Results for the day: 1st Rotokakahi, 2nd Okareka, 3rd Tikitapu and 4th Tarawera
GENERAL ACTIVITY DONATION Each year the school seeks from parents a $70 donation per student, (this amount is included in the school fees account). This donation can be claimed as a charitable donation through Inland Revenue. At Rotorua Lakes High School we spend the donation on first aid supplies, school nurse, and to support co-curricular activities. It is unfortunate that we need to seek charitable support from parents / whanau for so-called ‘free education’ but government grants to schools do not cover a lot of extras.
Thank you very much to the parents and whanau who pay this voluntary donation. _______________________________________________________________________________
LOST PROPERTY Items of lost property (including school uniform) are being held at Student Reception. They will be held until the end of the term, after that they will be disposed of and/or sent to charities. _______________________________________________________________________________

WINTER MENUS
COMMUNITY INFORMATION OUTWARD BOUND opportunity for parents and students
THANK YOU to the people who donated to ‘Give a Kid a Blanket
In early February the Holden Street Smart Road Safety Programme was officially launched, a hands-on driver-skills programme that aims to equip young kiwis with the knowledge and skills to safely navigate our roads. Holden Street Smart is a world-class, cognitive based driver programme that aims to positively influence the lives of young kiwis across the country. The Programme has been developed with the involvement of worldrenowned road safety expert, Peter Sheppard. In addition, passionate road safety advocate, Greg Murphy, is our Programme Ambassador. Offering a practical hands-on learning experience, Holden Street Smart is a programme that aims to add to, and compliment, the great work already undertaken by NZTA, NZ Police and others in the area of road safety and driving training. Holden Street Smart is a one-day event providing young drivers and their parents/caregivers the opportunity to undertake supervised driving practice. There is a focus on developing good decision-making strategies for safe driving, including assessing themselves, reading the road environment, resisting peer pressure, managing or eliminating distractions and planning ahead. The Programme takes place in safe, controlled, off-theroad environments, under the watchful eye of qualified coaches plus the parent/caregiver. This provides the parent the opportunity to also assess themselves, in order to be a better coach and mentor to their teen.
Holden Street Smart will be delivering the programme in the July school holidays at the Bruce McLaren Motorsport Park, Taupo, on Wed 11 July Registrations are open for only $49 at www.holdenstreetsmart.co.nz Watch the video:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oO49nI-gCGU
