Dear Parents/Caregivers _______________________________________________________________________ 2019 ALTHERM MOUNTAIN BIKING CHAMPIONSHIPS On March 16-17, Rotorua hosted 275 riders to compete for Cycling New Zealand national titles in cross country and downhill racing.

Four RLHS students entered the downhill event with great success.

NEWS REMINDERSNEWS FOR THE YEAR _______________________________________________________________________ INFO FOR THE UPCOMING BOARD ELECTIONS NZSTA would like to encourage parent and whanau participation on school boards in order to help shape and support the education of their children. To that end, we will be rolling out the Korari Programme for anyone interested in finding out about standing for the school board elections and having a say in the education of their children. The courses below are also available on our website: 1. Korari: a programme that provides you with governance training to help you understand the role of school boards of trustees.

2. Korari form: NZSTA will support anyone who advises us they are interested in becoming a trustee, by way of the workshops but also providing access to our Learning Management System where online modules re. school governance, student achievement etc. can be completed.

3. Community member guide to the role of the board of trustees: This explains a lot of commonly asked questions and information about becoming a trustee.

______________________________________________________________________ GREAT DAY OUT AT THE COUNCIL This week Mrs Hodge took 9M3 and 9S3 to the Rotorua Lakes Council as part of their Leadership and Government unit. Students were shown through the public areas of the RLC, and sat in the Council Chamber to listen to Rob Griffiths about how the council is structured and how students can get involved and have a say in our community. There were some interesting discussions and questions and it was great for students to hear some of their classroom learning "in the real world". A big thanks to Rob Griffiths for taking the time and creating a dynamic presentation for our classes.

_________________________________________________________________________ YEAR 13 TOURISM SUCCESS Year 13 tourism classes visited four local attractions last Friday to see tourism in action in our city. Firstly a guided tour through Te Puia to hear about how they market themselves, types of tourists that visit, sustainably methods etc. Then off to Skyline to see Crankworx in action and have some fun racing down the luge (no one could beat Mrs Hodge!). Then a quick visit to the 3D Trick Art Gallery before crossing over to the OGO. A fantastic fun day had by all, where students were able to meet potential future employers, see what it's like to be a tourist in our city and just have some fun. A wonderful group of year 13s and thanks to Mrs Kairaoi for coming along too.

Thursday after school 3.30 - 5pm in C3.

All senior Art, photography or sculpture students from any year 11/12/13 class can attend.

These will continue as needed throughout the year.

The purpose of these tutorials is to support senior students with assessment tasks. It is also a great time for students to complete any unfinished work they may have.

SCHOOL NOTICE BOARD

Introducing a new 'Youth' category for 2019 Kia ora, The Sir Peter Blake Trust recently opened nominations for the 2019 BLAKE Awards and this year we are very excited to introduce a new ‘Youth’ Category for people aged 13 – 20 years.

Previously, the BLAKE Awards have been presented to New Zealanders in their mid-careers only. However, we believe there are many outstanding young people, including high-school students, who deserve to be recognised at this level for their leadership.

This new award recognises and celebrates young people aged 13-20 whose leadership is creating an impact on a sustainable future for New Zealand. Consideration will be given to leadership creating impact across any social, cultural, environmental or economic areas of New Zealand society.

The BLAKE Awards are our premier awards for leadership achievement in New Zealand, and we have an outstanding Alumni of recipients including Peter Beck, Dr Michelle Dickinson and Dame Tariana Turia.

We are seeking nominations for outstanding young individuals who will potentially be selected for the inaugural Blake Award – Youth which will be presented at a black tie dinner in Auckland on Thursday 5 September 2019.

Nominations are now open and close on Sunday 5 May.

Top Art 2019 The Visual Art department is taking year 13 students to see this exhibition when it arrives in Rotorua.
