Dear Parents / Caregivers & Whanau It has been a week of highs and not so highs at RLHS. As many of you will be aware we have been in the throws of competing prelim exams. Now comes the important part of reviewing how students performed and supporting them in their learning to ensure strong results at the end of the year. On Friday we had ‘Decades Day’ at the school with interesting sartorial outcomes! Can I apologise up-front for any staff pictures which may scare you that come out of Facebook! It’s great to see an event where everyone can have a bit of fun. Thanks to our Year 13 for organizing this. We met with the Year 12 students this week to discuss prefect applications for 2020 so they all now be aware of the process we are following. Many of our students competed in the Tough Guy and Gal challenge with the weather playing a part in setting challenging conditions. The students I have spoken with enjoyed the event but found it exhausting. I wish to take this opportunity to welcome Isidora Gonzalez-Diaz onto the Board as the student representative for the 2019 / 2020 period. Having met her, I am sure that she will be a positive addition and able to represent student views in a clear and confident manner. On a more somber note, many of you will have seen the Facebook post I have put out regarding an incident that happening on Wednesday. As I said in my post the incident was no different to what happens in all schools across New Zealand at some point in time. Having said that I was dismayed by the actions of bystanders as they supported the fight, with some starting to record it on their cell phones. I am keen to use this as an opportunity to learn from and that is why I am making a point of raising it with our community. I would encourage all parents to discuss with their children how they can either be a positive or negative influence on events dependent on the actions that they take. I was pleased to see that some of our students were intervening and trying to stop the fight escalating and would hope that this would be the attitude of all our students. This incident does not reflect the values and approaches of the majority of our students. As a school we will be meeting with groups of students over the next week to ensure that they have an opportunity to reflect on the values and approaches that we expect on a daily basis. 1
Thank you to those parents who have written messages of support on our Facebook page, emailed and telephoned. It has been appreciated. Whilst these events are never pleasant they are fortunately very rare and give us a strong opportunity to build on our values and expectations as a school.
Nga mihi

Keeli Murphy, Bailey Murphy, Tracey Kwok and Nae Iida did us proud at the BOP Badminton Finals held in Tauranga. For the first time RLHS came second place in Division One. Our stand out player was Nae Iida who won all of her games. It was fantastic to see our students’ hard work and team spirit pay off. TOUGH GUY & GAL CHALLENGE On Friday 23rd August seventy five Year 12 and 13 students from the Sports Science, AOE and fitness classes participated in the Secondary School Tough Guy and Gal Challenge. They had been training over several weeks for this and the challenge on the day was to get around the 6km course of mud, water, obstacles and GIGANTIC hills in the fastest time possible. Although cold and a bit wet the students took it on with everything they had. Goals were achieved, challenges were overcome and many looked like they had lots of0020fun. Congratulations to Tegan Fookes for being the podium winner for the senior girls’ category. That is 3 wins in 3 years! Also our 3 fastest boys, Connor Thompson, Apache Davidson and Gabriel Santos, earned a 3rd placing as the Toughest School.
A great day for everyone – thank you to all our students who participated and we look forward to seeing some great results for NCEA!

PASSING EXAMS SEMINAR International author, speaker and trainer, Patrick Sherratt will be visiting Rotorua again to present his interactive and entertaining exam-preparation seminar to our senior students. In this two-hour public presentation, Patrick will offer a five-step approach to prepare for exams while building in solutions to many of the common challenges students face in the lead up to exams. If your son or daughter is having problems getting motivated to study, procrastinates, gets distracted easily, has a poor memory or suffers from exam nerves, this will be a "must-attend" seminar.

MEASLES UPDATE FROM THE MOE With the measles outbreak continuing across NZ and Winter Tournament Week kicking off with 79 events, we have sought advice from the Ministry of Health and have sent the advisory below to all schools. We include it here for you in order support any concerns that may arise at your event next week. We ask schools to ensure students, staff and all other adults travelling to WTW events be made aware of the symptoms of measles and the appropriate action to take should a student exhibit the symptoms. Information can be found on the Ministry of Health website at https://www.health.govt.nz/your-health/conditions-andtreatments/diseases-and-illnesses/measles. Parents should ensure their students are protected and the Ministry of Health have modified their advice to general practitioners asking them to prioritise the standard immunisation schedule at 15 months and 4 years, and if possible, anyone who has had no previous MMR immunisation. More advice is available at https://www.health.govt.nz/your-health/conditions-and-treatments/diseases-andillnesses/measles/measles-advice-2019. 5

FROM THE HEALTH & WELLNESS CENTRE HAYFEVER OR ALLERGIC RHINITIS as otherwise known. This condition can occur at any age and usually occurs after years of repeated inhalation of allergic substances. Symptoms of hay fever mimic those of chronic colds. SIGNS & SYMPTOMS – Nasal congestion. Runny nose with clear mucous. Sneezing. Nose, eye itching. Excess tear production in the eyes. Sometimes a cough and loss of taste sense can occur occasionally. Nose bleeding may occur if the symptom is severe. Eye itching, redness and excess tears in the eyes frequently accompany the nasal symptoms. The eye symptoms are referred to as Allergic Conjunctivitis (inflamed whites of the eyes). The best way to treat an allergy condition is to identify the allergic trigger and avoid it (if possible). Effective treatment is available in many forms, including medications. Antihistamines are the drugs most commonly used to treat hay fever/allergic rhinitis. If occurs whilst at school, please see the Nurse, Rachelle Smith smithr@rotorualakes.school.nz
