KYRA MITA WINS IN TAHITI Kyra Mita competed in the Tahiti Te Aito Festival and won the U16 Girls V1 Race. Te Aito Tahiti is the most important individual va’a rudderless race in Polynesia this year. There were 28 participating countries with just over 1000 paddlers competing. A fantastic achievement – well done! _________________________________________________________________________________

NEWS FROM DEPARTMENTS ____________________________________________________________________________ VISUAL ARTS New Year 9 and 10 Art options: If your son or daughter is in these new options for Term three, they will need to purchase an art pack from the school, unless they already have equipment and materials they can use. They are priced at $19.00 and include an A3 sketchbook, high quality drawing pencils (graphite and watercolour), an eraser, sharpener, a synthetic sable paintbrush, a large manila folder, and a permanent ink pen. They are sourced in bulk from Auckland and are cheaper than materials available locally in shops. Many other resources and materials are provided by the department at no charge to complete their projects. The packs will be given to the students on the first day of class.

Congratulations to Antonia Van Sitter, Year 13 Visual Arts Design and Painting student, who has been selected to sit on the Rotorua Lakes Council public arts selection panel, as the "Youth Voice" in the processes of choosing major funded arts projects in our community. Congratulations, Antonia, we are very proud of this achievement and how you will represent our school in the community.

Senior students have much to do in the upcoming holidays and term three. With the interruption of pre-lims next term and the pressures of meeting due dates, students will have to budget their time wisely in order to complete their portfolios (external assessments). The due dates for these will be at the end of term three, so please be sure your son or daughter are making good use of class time and working at home regularly to meet the deadlines.

DUKE OF EDINBURGH SILVER AWARDS Congratulations to Holly Forbes for completing her Silver Duke of Edinburgh's Hillary Award this week. She had an adventurous 3 days up on Mt. Ruapehu, tenting in the snow and tramping in quite challenging conditions. Her assessors were very impressed with her leadership, teamwork, navigation skills and camp craft. She is now registered for her Gold Award! Well done, Holly, keep up the

great work!

GIRLS HOCKEY Another freezing cold night at the Rotorua Hockey turfs for the spectators with our second pool game against Tauponui-a-Tia College (TNT). The game began at a brisk pace with Lakes on the attack almost immediately. A flurry of attacks followed and after 11 minutes Ella Fookes jinked her way in to the day and fired a long rage shot that may have been deflected by an RLHS player. More attacks followed and the TNT keeper was kept busy however, a quick breakout from a stalled Lakes attack caught the RLHS defence napping and TNT equalised after 21 minutes. A bit more to and fro and then it was half time with the scores equal at 1 - 1.

This weeks’ stirring words from Coach Smithells didn’t appear to have quite such a dramatic effect after half time as in other weeks nevertheless after 36 minutes Lakes were back in front from a brilliantly taken goal by Sharkayla Dean. This was the catalyst the girls needed and the attacks rained down on the TNT goal thick and fast before Ella Fookes added the third after 42 minutes. The RLHS defence were in danger of freezing to the spot through lack of activity when Teagan Fookes got our fourth after 49 minutes. A succession of PCs and well put together moves could not add any more to the score sheet and the full time score was 4-1. Player of the Day: Estelle Bilbe.

BOYS HOCKEY Another tough game against one of the top 4 in the grade - Trident. Down players due to illness, we knew we would be up against it. The boys took a while to settle into our game plan and unfortunately let some goals through in the process. Once they found their feet and played as per the plan they stopped the "onslaught" and started fighting for territory. Although a loss, the boys can hold their head high. Players of the day - the defense team of Devon Stewart, Dion Rose, Joel Roper and also center half and captain Matt Gatenby _______________________________________________________________________________

AUT (AUCKLAND INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY) UPDATES Applications for 2018 are now open. Please click here to apply. If students have any questions during the application process please do not hesitate to get in contact. Two points to note – 1) the default study start date will be Semester 2, 2017. Please ensure the student changes this to 2018 to commence study next year. 2) Students can apply for up to five programmes. All programme application are considered by admissions individually.

CAREER OUTING FOR RLHS STUDENTS The Careers Department staff recently took students to visit the Hayes Engineering Production Factory in Rotorua. Students were given a great insite into careers in Fabrication Engineering. They toured the workshops and the huge production building seeing first-hand the Export orders going out to countries around the world.

Fitters & Turners, Welders, Mechanical Engineers, Industrial & Computer Aided Design people are sought after in this Industry.

Having the GAP year debate? Here’s your ammunition (one way or the other) Courtesy Goal Digger Career Solutions - Rotorua

Parents far and wide and students themselves battle with the ‘do I, don’t I’ argument when it come to GAP years. There are differing points of view out there, but here is the Goal Digger advice, take heed…

Here at Goal Digger, we call GAP years, “GET A PURPOSE”. There is one question that must be asked if a GAP year is a consideration: “What’s my point in taking a GAP year?”.

When is a good time to take a GAP year?

If you, your son, or daughter is planning on taking a break before heading onto further study, there must be a definitive purpose for the break. Ask yourself “What enrichment will I gain out of this break?”. If you are planning to work at Camp America, or have secured a ‘cannot turn down’ year of work experience that is directly related to what you want to study, then yes, these are good opportunities. If you are planning to do your OE, then yes, this is good enrichment for your development as a person.

If you are really unsure of what you want to do beyond school, our first advice is to get some professional career help. But, if this isn’t an option, make sure you are actively seeking what it is that is right for you during your break time, don’t lose sight of improving yourself. We don’t advocate going and studying something random for the sake of it. Please consider student loans and the implications of withdrawing from study that is the wrong fit, on your academic record.

When is not a good time to take a GAP year?

Quite simply, if there is no point to your GAP year. If you are planning to work to save up for study, beware of the Bling Trap. Whilst earning money is great, are you realistically going to save a squillion dollars to put towards study/living when you are likely to be earning either the minimum or slightly over the minimum wage? We all know how tempting luxury food items, socialising and the odd trip to the clothing stores can add up rather quickly.

Other considerations: • It is hard to go back to being a poor student when you have had some disposable income for the previous year • Motivation to study can drop off when you have been out of that environment for a substantial period of time • If you plan to go into the Halls of Residence, you need to be aware that you will not be a priority student. Preference is given to younger students straight from school • If you have mucked around for a year, this will not look favourable in your application statements If you are taking a GAP year: • Have a clear plan and timeline of when your applications need to be submitted whilst you are on your break. You will not be in the school environment where you will be constantly reminded of closing dates and application requirements.

Get a purpose, or get to study!

2018 MESNZ ENGINEERING SCHOLARSHIP As part of the Maintenance Engineering Society of New Zealand objective "To encourage greater numbers of New Zealanders to take up education and training in the field of mechanical engineering", a MESNZ Scholarship worth up to $5,000 is to be offered each year, for the specific purpose of covering tuition fees. This scholarship is available to assist students commencing study towards a MESNZ/IPENZ accredited engineering degree, diploma or certificate at any level. Applications are sought from candidates interested in maintenance engineering as a career. Students from anywhere in New Zealand are encouraged to apply for the MESNZ scholarship. Students with links to MESNZ through work or other avenues are urged to apply.
