Kia ora Koutou, Another disappointing start to the week with the postponement of our New Parents BBQ Evening. By the time we actually have this meeting many of you may be veterans! Our swimming sports has now been re-scheduled for Monday 15 March 2021. (further details on page 3). Also, our Investiture Assembly is now on Tuesday 16 March 2021 at 12 noon in the Gym. An email has been sent to all parents with students involved. Unfortunately, we have experienced some software issues with our Tracking Reports that were due out today, Friday 5th March. We are working with our software provider and hope to get these out early next week. Apologies for the delay. I attended this year’s Yr 13 Camp last week and was very impressed with the positivity shown by our students and their team collaboration. It was a pleasure to watch them participate in swimming, surfing and our many workshops. I have to say I enjoyed the camp very much; it was hugely rewarding! (further details on page 2). We now look forward to our Year 10 camp in two weeks’ time from Wednesday 17 to Friday 19 March. I wish you a pleasant, relaxing weekend.

Ngā mihi,

Jon Ward Principal / Tumuaki wardj@rotorualakes.school.nz 1

STUDENT SUCCESSES ________________________________________________________________ OUTSTANDING YEAR 13 CAMP This year’s Year 13 Camp was happily exhausting, and hugely rewarding. From 6.30 in the morning until after the sun set, students were active with everyone enthusiastic to give everything they had. Bonds were established and students gained a greater understanding of their peers and expressed what the true Lakes High culture meant to them. It is our hope that this feeling of support and team work will prove invaluable as seniors of the school. For once the weather was totally on our side; amazing warmth for the entire camp. Over the four days students took part in various team-building activities, surfed, social and teambuilding challenges and relaxation techniques, swam and performed with a wealth of talent at night time. Thank you to the staff who came along; Paula Short, Simone Hamilton, Shaun English, Senila Savage and Jon Ward. Erin Eggleston came along as out parent help. His surf lifesaving experience and surfing skills were invaluable. It was fantastic to be able to share some of his professional knowledge in our staff skit and he was an integral part of the team. Thank you. We also had guest appearances for workshops; looking at relaxation techniques and yoga with Marion Forbes, which was just the tonic we all needed! Also, an afternoon at the Westend and hot chip dinner with Glenda Curtis. We are very lucky to have such a fantastic team and an amazing skillset of talents to share with our students. The staff particularly enjoyed watching the annual Beach Team Building activity and were delighted with the sportsmanship and spirit shown throughout the entire week. Exploring the new school Tohu was uplifting and special in such a magical place. The year 13’s have built a foundation on which they can grow as a group. Now it is up to them! We are thankful to all the teaching staff who took time out to have this experience and in particular to Ms Haana Howard for her hard work in effortlessly putting this all together. Well done to all! This year we would also like to acknowledge and thank Paula Short who is retiring as Camp Mother / Captain of Food. Paula has been at camp with us for the past 12 years. You will be missed Paula and thank you for your wonderful sense of fun, your caring nature, hard work and dedication. From all of

us at the Year 13 Camp.

___________________________________________________________________________ STUDENTS FALLING ILL DURING THE DAY Just a few pointers if your child falls ill at school: If this occurs during class time, the student should approach the teacher to get a pass to go to the nurse. The hours of the nurse are Monday to Friday 9.45 am to 2.30 pm. The nurse is unavailable between 12.00 pm and 12.30 pm. If students have a medical problem outside of the nurse’s times, they are to go to student reception. The nurse will contact parent/caregivers if the student needs to go home. The student will then be sent to the Duty Dean’s office next to the Canteen to sign out and wait to be picked up by the parent/caregiver. At times, the nurse may request parent/caregivers to pick the student up directly from the Health and Wellness Centre. Students should not be contacting parents/caregivers directly to pick them up if they are unwell. Thank you for your cooperation, if you have any queries, please give us a call.
