Dear Parents / Caregivers It is with a strange bitter sweet feeling that I write my final piece for the newsletter. Have I really been here 12 years? That sounds like a long time ... some might say too long! I remember coming here with my brand new Principal’s hat on, full of ideas, things to do to make a difference. Naive for sure, but with the best of intentions. Certainly, it has been a wonderful journey and I have learned so much myself. I look back with gratitude. I entered a profession dedicated to assisting young people achieve their potential, to revealing or finding their best selves. As I leave it, I am taking many happy memories. I'll always remember the things we achieved together. I've been asked what I'm going to do now. I'm going to do a lot of things and very few of them conform to the notion of retirement. I am going to travel to places I've always wanted to go to and haven't been. I am going to read books that have been waiting on my 'must read' list for years. I will garden, learn new skills, visit art galleries, listen to jazz whenever I want and most of all, enjoy being around family and friends... In short, I plan to LIVE. I want to pay tribute to my colleagues for their support, friendship and exemplars of what it is to be a teacher. I will always remember our shared laughter, our joys as well as our struggles. Thank you for the notes of appreciation, the wonderful gifts, words of encouragement, sharing of resources, and time, but mostly for your sincerity and trust. Also, a very sincere thank you to our fabulous admin team. They are the stars in the background who hold the entire school together. I will miss you all. To all our students and families – thank you for your support and it was my honour to be part of such a great school. With best regards. Yours sincerely
Principal

NEWS NEWS REMINDERS FOR THE YEAR ___________________________________________________________________________ SCHOLARSHIPS Remember that next term on Thursday 1st and Friday 2nd August (Week 2) we will be running workshops for Year 13's to apply for scholarships, universities, polytechs etc. To help us help you.... you should be organising your documentation over the holidays. Most applications require proof of identity and citizenship/residency. You should find your birth certificates and/or passports, any citizenship or residency documents (if you weren't born in NZ). Some applications will require proof of bank accounts - you can usually print this from your internet banking. Some photocopies can be verified by the school principal, others will need to be verified by a JP, so be prepared to visit the library or courthouse to have documents verified. You may also want to consider someone in the community who could be a referee for you - perhaps a manager at your work or a sports coach or someone you have done volunteer work for. Don't forget to ask them nicely rather than surprise them next term! DONT PANIC! This is a smooth process for everyone when we all work together. We are so proud of our scholarship recipients from last year who had their school and community achievements recognised. We are looking forward to the 2019 cohort being just as successful!
___________________________________________________________________________ SUBJECT CHOICE FOR 2020 During the first two weeks of Term 3 senior students will be making choices about subjects next year. There is an option evening for students and whanau on Wednesday 31 July 4 - 6pm. Head of Departments and Teachers In Charge will be available to talk about what their department offers. At the start of term 3 students will also be issued with a guide to help in this process. This year we are moving away from the paper process of selection and moving to an online process. We will be using schoolpoint (the same one we used for parent interviews). Students should make their selections after planning their course and talking with their teachers and whanau. We ask that parents "OK" their child's choices through their login in to school point (instructions below). HOD's will then confirm the student has made the prerequisites or is likely to make the prerequisites of the course they have chosen. At the option evening we will have available some devices for families to use. If you need any help logging into or using schoolpoint please contact Mrs Allen allenl@rotorualakes.school.nz or 345 6124 ext 221.
How to choose my Courses: 1. Log into SchoolPoint 2. Navigate to "My Courses" in the left hand navigation 3. You will see the subjects your child has chosen. The information button gives you more details about the subject 4. This is where you approve each subject choice your child has made (in lieu of a signature in previous years) ___________________________________________________________________________ HOLIDAY TUTORIAL NOTICE The holidays are a great time for your children to get those Photography and Art assessments completed!
