Kia ora Koutou, Dear Parents and Caregivers, This week we have been focused on ensuring students are tracking towards the outcomes they need to have a successful year academically. We have issued tracking reports that give an indication of how students are going. These are merely a guide and there is no specific threshold that students need to have attained at this point. It simply supports our staff and students to develop appropriate programs. You will see in the newsletter there have been announcements regarding changes to NCEA. I strongly recommend you read this information to be aware of how it affects your child. We are working hard to reinvigorate our sporting programs for 2020 and my thanks goes to all coaches and managers, especially those from our community who support the school in this effort. I would also like to especially thank Lisa McFarlane for the sterling work she is doing as our sports coordinator. I wish you all an enjoyable weekend as we continue to get back to normality. Nga mihi,
Jon Ward Principal / Tumuaki

NEWS __________________________________________________________________________ CHANGES TO NCEA FOR THIS YEAR Due to the disruption caused by COVID 19 NZQA have made changes to support students. The following changes are being made to NCEA and University Entrance (UE) requirements for this year: Students working towards an NCEA can gain additional credits, based on the number of credits they achieve during the 2020 school year. These additional credits will be known as Learning Recognition credits. For every 5 credits a student achieves towards their NCEA either through internal or external assessment, they are entitled to an additional 1 credit. Students at NCEA Level 1 are eligible for up to a maximum of 10 additional credits while those at Levels 2 and 3 are eligible for up to a maximum of 8 additional credits. Students will be awarded a certificate endorsement if they achieve 46 credits at Merit or Excellence level, rather than the usual 50. Students achieving 12 credits at Merit or Excellence level in a course – rather than 14 – will be awarded a course endorsement. Current UE requirements have been reduced from 14 to 12 credits in three UEapproved subjects. Students still need to attain NCEA Level 3 and meet literacy and numeracy requirements to be awarded University Entrance. External NCEA examinations and NZ Scholarship examinations will now take place from 16 November 2020 to 9 December 2020. This will provide extra time for teaching, learning and assessment in Term 4. The submission date for subjects which require students to submit a portfolio (for example, Design and Visual Communications) has been extended to 12 November 2020, to give students more time to complete their portfolios. These changes have been designed to encourage students to continue working towards their NCEA and to ensure that the NCEA attained by our Rangatahi this school year is just as valid as those earned in previous years. A summary is below:

The Asthma Nurse (Lakes Region) will again be attending Rotorua Lakes High School to support and educate asthmatic teens around their asthma. We offer a free one on one assessment service where we assess all newly enrolled students who have asthma, as well as those who might be having issues managing their asthma. We seek to improve our regions asthma outcomes by educating people around their asthma so they can better understand their condition and how best to manage it. We also aim to keep students in school and reduce school absenteeism caused from poorly controlled asthma. We make sure the students are on the right medications, and use good asthma inhaler technique and help the student to find ways for them to best manage their asthma individually. Please inform the school nurse (nurse@rotorualakes.school.nz or 3459502) if you do not wish your child to be seen by the Asthma NZ nurse. To find out more about us please visit our website at https://www.asthma.org.nz/ Or contact Nurse Educator Amanda Vercoe, Phone: 021 0844 1635 Email: Rotorua@asthma.org.nz
