CHALKBOARD From the Principal – P. 1 - 7 Information – P. 7 - 8 Student Successes – P. 8 Sports – P. 9 Careers – P. 9 - 11 Notice Board – P. 11 Contacts – P. 11
Kia ora Koutou, This week we have seen recognition of some of our school leaders at the Young Achievers Exhibition launched on 3 November at Pak’nSave Rotorua. These young leaders are both a testament to their own efforts and hard work and also a positive reflection on the support that we have offered as a school. We will be sad to lose them at the end of this year but we look forward to hearing about their future successes beyond Lakes High. Unfortunately, there will be no Young Achievers Evening this year. However, with the help of RECT and sponsors, we will be holding a Young Achievers morning tea here at school on Thursday 11 November to recognize and reward their fantastic achievements. Regrettably, due to the restrictions with covid 19, our usual School Sports Prizegiving was a smaller event than usual. It was held on Thursday in our School Auditorium. The recipients of awards and a limited number of staff were in attendance, keeping to the 100 number in accordance with regulations. Parents, Coaches, Managers and TICs will be invited to attend a function to acknowledge the contributions that they have made to our Sports Teams over the year. Although smaller, it was a great chance to see and recognize our very talented sporting students. (further details on pages 2 - 6). As you are aware from posts and in the paper, we had an incident during the week where teenagers pranked the school grounds. This turned into a far more dangerous situation with one of our ground staff being thrown onto the top of a car. Police are investigating this and I am pleased to say that the students involved were not from RLHS. Thanks for all the messages of support for our injured staff member. He has been overwhelmed with the aroha shown by our community. Although shaken, thankfully he is on the mend. Have a great weekend. Ngā mihi
Jon Ward Principal / Tumuaki

A huge thank you to the following staff for their hard work in putting this together for us: Ms Lisa McFarlane, our Sports Co-ordinator for her brilliant organisation of this event with great support from Whaea Pani Mc Lean, and to our non teaching staff who assisted her so well with administration. ___________________________________________________________________________ NZQA Students should be logging into their area on the NZQA site (www.nzqa.govt.nz) regularly to check their entries for externals, current results and how they link to Pathways and also, they can see their personalised exam timetable. All they need is their NSN (this is on all the tracking reports and can be accessed through the KAMAR and Schoolpoint portals).
We strongly encourage students to do this often! 7

__________________________________________________________________________ HOMESTAYS AT RLHS IN 2022 Are you interested in hosting an International Student or two in 2022 or beyond? It is likely that our borders will open up next year & we already have a number of groups interested in visiting our school for both language & cultural exchanges. At this stage most of these are 2 week stays. It is unlikely that the borders will be open early enough for us to accept International Students from the beginning of 2022, however, we could be looking at hosting students from about the middle of the year for 2 terms. 2023 could well allow us to once again accept students for a whole year. You will of course be paid an allowance for having a student stay with you, so if you are interested or would like more information please contact our Homestay Coordinator, Kay Ackerman ackermank@rotorualakes.school.nz or Director of International Students, Craig Cocking cockingc@rotorualakes.school.nz
STUDENT SUCCESSES ___________________________________________________________________________ STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE TO THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES Congratulations to our Year 12 student, Ara Robinson, who has been elected our new Student Representative to the Board of Trustees. Well done! A huge thank you also to Mya Bottomley for putting her name forward - it was a very close call.

SPORTS NEWS ___________________________________________________________________________ NZ NATIONALS U 18 RUGBY LEAGUE COMPETITION Congratulations to Harry Durbin, Yr 13, and his Upper Central Zone Stallions who won the NZ Nationals U18 rugby league competition. They made a comeback from being 14 points down in the final to beat the South Island team 30-28 in Christchurch last weekend. The Stallions had to regroup during the round robin stages after losing nine of their players because of the Waikato region going into a Covid lockdown. They entered the final as underdogs after losing to the South Island two weeks earlier in the round robin. It was a top effort from the players and coaches to turn the result around.
Well done Harry, we are so proud of you.
