Rotorua Lakes High School “Mauria te pono - Keep steadfastly to the truth”
NEWSLETTER ISSUE No. 35 – 6 DECEMBER 2019
CHALKBOARD From the Principal - P. 1 - 15 News – P. 16 - 19 Notice Board – P. 20 Contact Us – P. 20 Our Sponsors – P. 21
Kia ora Koutou, We come to the end of the 2019 academic year, finishing in style with a great celebration with our junior students at Junior Prizegiving. My heartfelt thanks to all parents and caregivers for supporting your children through the year and enabling us to provide them with positive experiences. I hope that our students will take on board the message I gave at prizegiving, to take those opportunities when they arrive, maintain a positive outlook and engage in every activity as the chance arises. It was enjoyable to host representatives from a number of our feeder schools who were at Junior Prizegiving and once again this demonstrates that strong academic outcomes are not due to the efforts of a single school alone, but the combined efforts of every school engaging with their students from year zero onwards. The coherent educational pathways that we are building across the Eastside ensure that every one of our students has the opportunity to reach personal excellence. The Rotorua Eastside Kahui Ako (REKA) is the fundamental building block of our interschool relationships. The continuing collegial approach between our schools is a guarantee of all our students’ future success. Yesterday evening we had the pleasure of saying farewell to our Year 13 graduates. Again, it was a heartwarming experience to see such great young adults moving forwards to the next stage of their lives. I, and all the staff at Lakes High School, wish them the very best in their future pathways. It only remains for me to wish you all a safe and happy festive season. To our students, ensure you look after your parents / caregivers and engage in some positive family time. We look forward to seeing you all again in the New Year.
Wishing you all happy, safe and enjoyable holidays. Nga mihi
Jon Ward Principal / Tumuaki 1

NEWS ___________________________________________________________________________ CHRISTMAS SHOEBOX PROJECT Mrs Hodge and 9S3 organised the junior students and staff of Rotorua Lakes High to contribute items for the local initiative "Rotorua Shoebox Project". Students wrapped boxes in Christmas paper, chose a gender and age of a child and then packed these boxes full of new, donated items such as toys, toiletries, clothing etc. These were then collected by the organisers and will be distributed to needy children aged 2-13 from Rotorua childcares and primary schools to be opened on Christmas day. This was a
wonderful experience to be a part of and students were able to show their caring sides in this social action and we created 17 boxes!
16
Thank you to all the Lakes High community who donated.
___________________________________________________________________________ AUCKLAND UNIVERSITY BEAMS PROGRAMME On the 25th and 26th November, 10 students had the opportunity to visit Auckland University. They were able to attend lectures/workshops covering Business, Engineering, Architecture, Medicine and Science. The students were also fortunate to be able to visit Fonterra and Craigs Investment Partners whilst they were in Auckland. A huge mihi to Tom Davies and Vicki Rathbone.
___________________________________________________________________________ MOUNT ELECTIVE 20 students, Mrs Hodge, Mrs Aperahama and Mrs Kairaoi spent three days over at Mount Maunganui for elective week. They learnt to surf, went to the hot pools, walked out to the blowhole, ate ice creams, went shopping and spent an exciting day at Waimarino Adventure Park. It was fantastic to see the progress of students on their second day of surfing - they were all pro's by then!
