Kia ora Koutou, A busy and tiring week for many of our students with Year 13 Camp in full swing. Students have been enjoying many positive activities to develop team work, leadership, empathy and establish how our Year 13’s can individually and collectively impact on our culture as a school. I look forward to seeing how the skills we have been working on are brought back into Lakes High for the benefit of the entire school community.

At Junior Assembly this week, we talked about the positives that our students can be engaged in. The majority of our students have settled into school routines, whilst enjoying the numerous activities available to them. I have also talked at junior assembly about the small minority of students who are not getting it right all the time. Whilst not going into specifics, as a school, we are working to support changes in their outlook. I do not wish to dwell overly on the negative aspects but would like to comment that it takes our whole community to support all our students, especially those who are struggling to find a positive pathway. I look forward to developing specific programs that will help us engage every student.

I continue to appreciate the feedback from parents regarding our school. Thank you for taking the time to do this.

NEWS __________________________________________________________________________ TRACKING REPORTS These were issued last week and are intended as a snap shot of how your child is settling into their learning. Unfortunately, there is a wee problem with the calculations for subject attendance in that, if your child was attending an activity (like Investiture, Peer Support, Literacy testing etc.) the system is calculating this as an absence. We are working with this software provider to come up with a solution so that the attendance is accurately reflected in the stats. Our apologies for this. Please note the overall attendance figures are not affected by this.

UPDATE ON COVID-19 COVID-19 (novel coronavirus) is now confirmed in New Zealand, but Ministry of Health advise the chance of a widespread outbreak is low. Symptoms of COVID-19 are similar to a range of other illnesses such as influenza.

Having any of these symptoms does not necessarily mean that you have COVID-19.

Symptoms include: • fever • coughing • difficulty breathing.

Preventing the risk You can take some simple steps to help stop the spread of diseases like COVID-19: • Avoid close contact with people with cold or flu-like illnesses.

• Cover coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues or clothing.

• Wash hands for at least 20 seconds with water and soap and dry them thoroughly: 2

__________________________________________________________________________ OUR ATHLETICS DAY On Friday 28th of February, we held our annual full school athletics championships. It was a very successful day filled with our students competing and participating in our track and field events. Congratulations to those who participated and more so, placed and qualified for the Bay of Plenty Athletic competition.

We are very excited to announce that a 1979 record was broken, a huge congratulations to Bella Wyatt for her 1500m time of 5.37.54.

___________________________________________________________________________ TOP ART SUCCESS FOR RLHS Congratulations to the year 13 painting students who were awarded an Excellence grade for their painting portfolios last year. Two of these folios, one by River Mutton and the other by Kayleigh Pyke, were chosen to be part of a Rotorua schools exhibition of Excellence. Check it out when you visit Top Art at the library in the coming weeks. (further details on our ‘noticeboard’ at the end of this newsletter).

___________________________________________________________________________ YEAR 11 PAINT & CLASS On Tuesday this week some of the year 11 Paint and Print class went on a trip to the Children’s art house.

We were met there by two staff members from the museum education team, who taught the students about printmaking and abstract art. They had a great time and completed some monoprints for their internal assessment. In a couple of weeks, the rest of the class will complete this programme, along with the sculpture class. Well done everyone!

___________________________________________________________________________ 9S3 VISIT TO RLC This afternoon 9S3 visited the RLC as part of their government unit in Social Studies. Students were spoken to about the different roles of the Council, how to make a submission and were even given a chance to have their say about living on the Eastside. Thanks to Rob Griffiths for hosting us.

www.matesanddates.co.nz Our School has been selected to participate in a new ACC school-based healthy relationships programme called Mates & Dates.

ACC has developed Mates & Dates to help to prevent dating and sexual violence. This is important given that 1 in 5 female and 1 in 10 male secondary students say they have had unwanted sexual contact or been made to do unwanted sexual acts. 57% of those who experience this tell no one.

Working with young people is one of the most effective ways of preventing sexual violence. ACC has worked closely with the Ministry of Education to ensure that the programme aligns with the curriculum and is appropriate to our young people’s learning needs.

Mates & Dates aims to teach young people how to: have healthy relationships based on respect, negotiation and consent identify inappropriate behaviour get help if they, or someone they know, are in an unhealthy relationship including unhealthy friendships safely intervene in situations that could lead to harm.

Mates & Dates is a strengths-based programme that believes all young people are able act with respect towards their mates, dates, and family in all interactions.

The programme taught in each year group will be appropriate for that age group. It will be taught by specialist sexual violence prevention programme facilitators over five one hour sessions. Mates & Dates is not a sex education programme, but will include materials and discussions about relationship violence, (this includes friends and whanau), consent, dating and the impact of pornography. No explicit materials will be shown.

Our current Year 10 students were tested at the beginning and the end of the year in 2019. SPORTS ___________________________________________________________________________ BOYS HOCKEY The trials have been completed and we thank all the boys who turned up over the last two weeks. We have been very fortunate to have coach Owen Mitai Wells bring his younger brother Leo (ex Blacksticks) down to help with the selection. They were impressed with the skills on display and acknowledged to the boys that while some haven't made the 1st Team they certainly have challenged the spots. This is all very promising for our hockey teams future!

Team lists are up. A wider squad of 20 has been selected, which will be reduced to 15 over the next few weeks.

We do need a Coach for the 2nd XI team so anyone willing and able please let Ms Sturme know (sturmej@rotorualakes.school.nz). We can offer support for a new coach.

___________________________________________________________________________ RLHS NETBALL 2020 And so it begins! The netball season for 2020 is well underway at RLHS. This year we have two senior teams and two junior teams representing our school on Wednesday afternoon/evenings at the Rotorua Netball courts on Malfroy Road.

Trials for both seniors and juniors will begin on Monday 9 March after school at the RLHS netball courts.

Students are to be changed, have suitable footwear and be ready to start by 3:30pm.

Students who wish to trial but who have not given their names to Ms H Hingston (TIC Netball) need to do this before the end of Monday. Only those students who have put their names down to trial will be able to do so.

___________________________________________________________________________ LAKES HIGH CRICKET REPORT – 29 JANUARY 2020

By Andrew Reid We knew we were going to be up against some stiff competition at Neil Hunt Park on Saturday when we saw the opposing team from Papamoa arrive in their own cars, and then mistakenly identifying some of their players as coaches and parent support. Despite the obvious height and facial hair disparity between teams, our Lakes High Cricket team were still determined to give Papamoa an honest run for their money.

Choosing to bat first after winning the toss, Papamoa were soon to receive a lesson in pace bowling from Harry Chessman and Logan Agnew. Both left scorch marks on the pitch with their deliveries, and clean bowled a batsman each in consecutive overs early in the innings. Papamoa then settled well into the crease before a change of pace was introduced when Matthew Parker entered the bowling order. Tangling the batsmen’s arms in knots with some deceptive deliveries, Matthew was able to send two batting dangermen back to the changing room in quick succession providing them with a timely opportunity to reflect on their life choices.

A superb catch and bowl display by Harry Chessman, coupled with a marvellous catch in the deep by Kaspa Grunwell brought the forty over innings to a close. In doing so, setting a challenging run target for our Lakes High team.

Foreboding clouds over Mount Ngongotaha did not deter our resolve throughout the run chase. Although our opening batsmen were both dismissed early in the piece, a sterling batting partnership then ensued with Isaac Field and Joel Sutton in the middle. Isaac scoring 37 and Joel achieving a tremendous half century finishing on 51.

Papamoa’s frustration seeped through their demeanour, having clearly underestimated the fortitude of our attack.

Unfortunately, however, our combined batting efforts were not enough to topple the more experienced Papamoa team.

As the sun set in the west at stumps, our weary Lakes High team remained safe in the knowledge they had again stayed true to their values and represented their school with honour.

PĀNUI PĀPĀHO Partnership enables budding laboratory technicians to upskill closer to home

Starting this year, laboratory technician students can complete their studies and have practical hands on experience while living here in Rotorua. Rotorua Lakes Council has partnered with Real World Education to provide laboratory technician students the opportunity to gain experience through placement at Council’s Environmental Laboratory.

The aim of the partnership is to reduce barriers to gaining further education for local students by providing a study option closer to home. For local students this will reduce study costs and allow them to maintain connections with friends and whānau while gaining the skills and knowledge needed to develop their profession.

Real World Education (RWE) is a government funded educational provider specialising in programmes for people starting or advancing laboratory careers. Students enrolled in RWE’s laboratory technician programmes are required to complete theoretical and practical studies. Previously the practical aspect of the programme has not been available in Rotorua. The partnership began with connections made under Pūtake Nui - a collaborative approach by local and central government, non-government organisations, hapū, businesses and communities within Rotorua, focused on making positive and sustainable changes that work for rangatahi.

Through the Laboratory Technician Comprehensive Programme participants receive the New Zealand Certificate in Applied Science (Level 4) and, upon completion, the New Zealand Diploma in Applied Science (Level 6). Students can also go on to gain a Postgraduate Diploma in Analytical Science Programme. For more information about completing Laboratory Technician Training, email info@real.ac.nz or visit www.real.ac.nz Real World Education Students can sign up for 2020 Laboratory Technician study now, with new intakes opening each month. There are approximately 25 spots for domestic participants in all programmes (combined) throughout the entire country. The course is eligible for ‘fees free’ funding and scholarships are available. Laboratory Technicians analyse samples such as water, foods, drinks, pharmaceutics, environmental samples, and mining samples, to find out the chemical and bacteria content. The kind of sample analysed depends on the area of work.

Rotorua Lakes Council’s Environmental Laboratory Staff in Council’s Environmental Laboratory test for nutrients and pathogens present in drinking water, wastewater, storm water, and sludge. Council’s Environmental Laboratory is located at the Waste Water Treatment Plant on Te Ngae Road, next to Puarenga Park.

Pūtake-Nui Pūtake-Nui initiated from the Rotorua Working Together Forum. There are four areas of focus within Pūtake-Nui; Rangatahi well-being, Act early act together, Youth centric, and Rangatahi with aspirations. Their goal is to make positive change for the rangatahi of Rotorua, from a citywide approach.
