Rotorua Lakes High School “Mauria te pono - Keep steadfastly to the truth”

NEWSLETTER ISSUE No. 07 – 6 MAY 2022

CONTENTS From the Principal – P. 1 - 2 News from Teachers – P. 2 -5 Student Successes – P. 5 - 6 Careers / Gateway – P. 6 -7 Notice Board – P. 8 - 9

Kia ora Koutou, Welcome back to Term 2. I hope you all had a very relaxing and enjoyable holiday. Sadly, this week, there have been a small group of students who have decided to go against everything we stand for as a school, fighting and using violence to solve conflicts. There has also been ongoing vandalism of our toilets and graffiti around the school. These students have all received significant consequences. What saddens me is that these actions are by no means reflective of our student body and the positive environment that normally exists in our school. I will end this comment with a simple statement: Violence in any form will not be tolerated at Rotorua Lakes High School. We are proud of our school environment and vandalism and graffiti by a small group ruins it for everyone. I appreciate the support of our wider community and parent body in reinforcing this message. Back to the positives During the holidays, we were so proud of all our rangitahi on Anzac Day. They demonstrated respect and honoured all those who have and continue to show service for our country. We were particularly proud of Kahurangi Dewes Green - RLHS Head Girl who addressed the ANZAC Day service with a very moving and heartfelt speech reflecting on the service of her koro. Well done Kahurangi - a very fitting tribute.

It is our pleasure to welcome our two new teachers, Mr Tamihana Gardiner, Te Reo Teacher (further details on page 3), and Ms Angela Gunn, English teacher.

This year they are also holding Parent’s evening on Tuesday 28th June from 6-8pm. This is where parents who have students starting to get their licenses or learning to drive can come along and see and experience what the expo has to offer about Road Safety etc. In addition to providing an opportunity for parents to participate in the learning, the evening would also allow for those students who may be unable to make during the daytime to attend.

2022 RYPEN CAMP On Friday 8th to Sunday 10th of April, seven students from Rotorua Lakes High School went to the RYPEN (Rotary Youth Programme of Enrichment) camp at the Okataina Education Centre, where we stayed 2 nights and 3 days. There were Year 10 students there from all across Rotorua, from Boys High, Girls High, John Paul College, Western Heights and Reporoa College. All of the schools were mixed up and we were put into teams so we all had to make new friends quickly. We gained a lot of new skills from this camp, like navigation and map reading skills, knot tying, kayaking, waka ama, and water activity skills. We had a fun day at Lake Okataina doing timed activities in our groups, we played Māori games, did team building activities and had to speak in front of the whole group. One of the nights, we did a burma trail in the bush and the other night, we spent sleeping in the bush inside bivouacs we had made in with our groups. This was awesome, but very cold so we looked forward to the hot chocolate when we returned to camp at 6am! We also went for many walks in the bush during the camp; we got to see a big wall of glow worms, and we learnt about the iwi in that area. We played heaps of games in teams, including volleyball and loads of ABL activities and a scavenger hunt. It was a really fun camp with a good bunch of kids. I’m sure all of us made a lot of new friends from all over Rotorua and enjoyed the challenges provided for us. The staff there were really cool, they were always encouraging everyone and had a good attitude and shared their life experiences with us.

We want to say a big thank you to Mrs Hodge for organising RYPEN at Rotorua Lakes High School, and to the Rotary Club of Rotorua who sponsored the seven of us to go. Students who attended RYPEN 2022 and contributed to this article:

Hannah Kiernan, Tokoaitua Owen, Lachie Hoggard, Ella Dalgarno, Nakoda Davidson, Coniah Erasmus, Siwan Lloyd-Jones

___________________________________________________________________________ NATIONAL AGE GROUP SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS WELLINGTON Two Rotorua Lakes High School Students qualified to race at the National Age Group Championships in Wellington with the Swim Rotorua team over the holidays - this in itself is a huge achievement especially this year due to the lack of qualifying competitions and Covid.

Leonard Rankin (13yrs) was competing at his first age group national competition. Leonard raced two personal best times, placing 12th in 50 backstroke and 15th in 50 butterfly. Samuel Trass (16yrs) and a veteran of the competition raced in 6 events achieving multiple personal best times. His top race was the grueling 200 metres butterfly where Samuel won the BRONZE medal. In addition, Samuel placed 5th in the final of the 50 butterfly and just missed finals in 50 and 200 backstroke placing 9th. Samuel also placed 10th in 100 backstroke and 11th in 100m fly.
