Kia ora Koutou, Welcome back to Term 2. I hope you all had a very relaxing and enjoyable holiday. Over the holidays our Kapa Haka group put in a tremendous amount of hard work and practice sessions for the upcoming National Championships on 2 June. It is fantastic to see our students so excited and motivated and just a tiny bit nervous! Our Head of Maori Department, Ms Nelson, also advised that the Tutors are very proud of our students and very impressed with the commitment and mahi shown. Well done to our students and to everyone involved for all your hard work. Our winter sports teams are up and running which is a great way to begin the term. We look forward to a strong season with all our teams. A shout out to all our hard working coaches and managers for the upcoming season. A huge well done to our Year 13 student, Charlie Millington who has been chosen to participate in the UCI Junior World Cup for Cross Country Mountain Biking Championships held in MacKay, Queensland, Australia at the end of May. All the best Charlie. (further details on page 2). Also, during the holidays, our Year 10 student, Nico Dunn competed in the Halberg Games, which were held at King's College in Auckland. Nico produced an awesome set of results; 2nd in the 100m, 4th in the 400m and 3rd in the 800m. Well done. (further details on page 2) We had a very different House assembly on Tuesday 4 May. The Heads of House have organized Competitive Challenges for all houses over the next few weeks. Students will play football, touch rugby, basketball, volleyball and netball games against each other’s houses. It was a very successful first event and a great way to encourage school spirit and student involvement. Thank you to all our Heads of House who have worked hard to organize this. Finals for each sport will be held at lunchtimes. (see pics on page 3). Please note that our school is closed on Tuesday 18 May 2021 for a Teacher Only Day to develop the current changes to NCEA teaching and assessment. I understand that this can be a hassle in keeping your child at home but these days are important for the development of our school. (Further details on page 5).

STUDENT SUCCESSES ___________________________________________________________________________ CHARLIE MILLINGTON – PICKED FOR SUCCESS Our Year 13 student, Charlie Millington has been chosen to participate in the UCI Junior World Cup for Cross Country Mountain Biking Championships held in MacKay, Queensland, Australia at the end of May. Charlie was chosen, along with a team of 6 New Zealanders, who are all ranked in the Top 5 in NZ age groups U19, U23 and elite. Charlie had to place in the top 5 at the NZ Nationals event to qualify. ___________________________________________________________________________ ROTORUA ACCELERANDO PROGRAMME Big thank you to Liz Carrington and her amazing team for an unforgettable week of music making for our students. It was an intensive week of learning and rehearsing with amazing tutors to guide them. The group of Rotorua students performed two concerts at the end of the programme in the Shambles Theatre. The quality of the performances were outstanding and our students had a great time working with other performers and making new friends. We are very proud of the 10 young vocalists from Rotorua Lakes High School who participated
Bailey Andrews, Caitlin Newson, Elrie Bosch, Kahurangi Dewes-Green, Keita Te Moni, Lauren Thompson, Phoenix Andrews, Riley Roebuck, Tiana Hunter and William Davies. BIG CONGRATULATIONS TO William Davies who won the most promising senior vocalist award and Tiana Hunter the most improved intermediate vocalist.

GENERAL INFO ___________________________________________________________________________ TEACHER ONLY DAY Please note that our school is closed on Tuesday 18 May 2021 for a Teacher Only Day to develop the current changes to NCEA teaching and assessment. ___________________________________________________________________________ SCHOOL NURSE Our school nurse has taken up another role and we wish to congratulate her in achieving her new position. Unfortunately, this means we have had to recruit for a new school nurse. We are very pleased to announce that Haley Fisher will be joining us as our school nurse shortly. She starts in the role on the 27 May 2021. This means there is a period of time where we are without a school nurse on site at RLHS. To ensure our students have medical support and provision, we wish you to note the information below. Thank you for your understanding.

___________________________________________________________________________ MATHS HOMEWORK CENTRE Each WEDNESDAY from 3.30 – 4.15 in A11 All students are Welcome - Please bring a snack and remember this is a space where all students can come and complete homework, get some help if needed or simply have some time to do the mahi.
__________________________________________________________________________ STUDENT ABSENCES It is expected that parents phone the school absence line (345 6124, ext 244) before 8.30 am to let us know that their child will be away from school. A written letter from home explaining the absence must be supplied to the House Group tutor on the student’s return to school if you have not phoned in. We also have an ABSENCE LINE FOR TEXTING 027 765 4957. Please give your name, your student’s name, House Group and the reason for absence.
