WHANAU SUPPORT GROUP and FRIENDS OF THE SCHOOL (FOTS) We want to renew our Whanau Support Group and Friends of the School (FOTS) Group. Deputy Principal Pani McLean and HOD Maori Taumata Soloman will lead the Whanau Support Group and Deputy Principal Ross Dunn will lead the Friends of the School Group. Other teaching staff as well as B.O.T members will attend meetings so these groups can become consultative forums where the school can highlight current initiatives and present possible future initiatives for feedback and feed forward from Parents / Whanau. At this point we are thinking we could meet about twice per term.

The aim of these groups is not fund raising but to provide a forum where Whanau / Parents and the school can share ideas etc. about the educational needs of our Community and the students at RLHS. If you are interested in joining either of these groups, please contact Pani McLean, mcleanp@rotorualakes.school.nz or Ross Dunn, dunnr@rotorualakes.school.nz Thank you to those people who have previously responded. You will be contacted shortly regarding a meeting time.

TE PAPA TOUR FOR ART OF REMEMBERING PRIZE WINNER On Thursday, Year 13 student Leroy Nurkka travelled, to Wellington on Thursday with his Photography teacher Haana Howard to take up his prize won in the Art of Remembering competition. Part of his prize was travel to Wellington to have a curator’s tour of Te Papa’s The Scale of War exhibition which was the start of a fantastic eye opening day for the pair. Along this tour they met Richard Taylor, creator of the exhibition and owner of Weta studios. Kirsty Ross gave amazing insight into the workings and research that went into making such a magnificent exhibition.

Leroy at Weta in Wellinton on his tour through Pukeko Productions studios on the set of Thunderbirds

Leroy was also shown through the behind the scenes storage and preservation of art systems at Te Papa. From there they travelled to Weta Cave and toured through the techniques and goings on behind their various productions, including Lord of The Rings movies and The Scale of War exhibition plus loads more. Then Leroy and Haana were privileged to have a personal tour through the Pukeko Productions, another creation of Richard Taylor. Here they got to get up close and personal with the miniature sets of Thunderbirds and see the intricate details that went into making them.

Leroy got a lot out of the day and thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. He would like to thank the Rotorua Museum for giving him the opportunity to enter the competition and for providing such an amazing tip. Also to Weta studios and Te Papa for making him feel like a star and opening up a whole new world of imagination and possibilities for him. _______________________________________________________________________________

U15 PIKIAO RUGBY LEAGUE Congratulations to Year 11 student, Ray Adlam, and the under 15’s Pikiao Rugby League team for winning the National Maori Rugby League tournament over Queen's birthday weekend. After playing a number of strong round robin games, Pikiao took out the final in golden point over time when the score was 24-24. Not only did Pikiao have the smallest forward pack in the competition, it was the only club side invited to play against regional rep teams. The tournament has never been won by a club side before. Ray is the only student from Lakes High to play for Pikiao under 15’s _______________________________________________________________________________

_________________________________________________________________________ STUDENT FEE STATEMENTS Please note that the students’ fee statements have been handed out to students. Please check their bags for invoices. Just a reminder that student fees need to be paid for students to be eligible to attend the school ball. We would appreciate prompt payment. Thank you. _______________________________________________________________________________

GENERAL ACTIVITY DONATION Each year the school seeks from parents a $70 donation per student, (this amount is included in the school fees account). This donation can be claimed as a charitable donation through Inland Revenue. At Rotorua Lakes High School we spend the donation on first aid supplies, school nurse, and to support co-curricular activities. It is unfortunate that we need to seek charitable support from parents / whanau for so-called ‘free education’ but government grants to schools do not cover a lot of extras.

Thank you very much to the parents and whanau who pay this voluntary donation.

SPORTS BOYS SOCCER The rain threatened on Wednesday but the skies cleared for the final game of the first round of Boys Soccer. We were playing WHHS Navy squad and the boys after last week were ready for a good game of football. Lakes came out strong and Sean Folley blocked the few shots on goal that WHHS had. Lakes demonstrated skill through the backline and mid field with Cullen Dittmer and Brad Francis (captain) working seamlessly together. With no subs the boys had to dig deep and it was well into the first half when WHHS scored their first goal. That was to be the only goal of the half and so with heads high Lakes were only down by one goal. Unfortunately we fell asleep in the first part of the second half and Heights scored twice more. Lakes fought back and fought right to the last minute when, on advice from the coach Bailey Parsonage, moved into the perfect position to score his first goal for Lakes (last week he scored an own goal). It was a stunning game and the boys have certainly improved a lot. There were three Players of the Day; Sean Folley, Brad Francis and Bailey Parsonage. _________________________________________________________________________________________

GIRLS HOCKEY The 2nd X1 Girls Hockey team played JPC on Tuesday night. It was a fabulous game to watch and the girls did amazingly well at keeping the ball away from our goal. We lost 2-0 and the Player of the day was Danielle Vooght for not allowing more balls to pass through. Well done girls!

_________________________________________________________________________________________

BOYS HOCKEY A cold day but lucky for us an early game against WHHS. The boys started strong dominating the play for most of both halves. Good periods of play saw the boys connecting with each other, pushing into the oppositions circle. Many attempts were made on the goal but there were many near misses and saves by the goalie. The boys just couldn't quite make it but kept trying till the end of the game with a final score of a draw 0-0. Player of the day Cody Managh.

This programme is run by some Rotary Districts in Australia and all Districts in New Zealand. It is designed for 14 – 16 year old students to experience a true “exchange” with a family in the other country. In 2019 Australian students arrive in New Zealand and attend school with their matched student during Term 2. Both students then return to Australia at the end of June and attend the Australian student’s school during Term 3. In 2019 it is hoped, there will be 60 students from Australia and New Zealand involved in the programme. In the past ten years more than 1600 students have participated in this life-changing experience. One of the aims of Rotary International throughout the world is to bring about a better understanding between people. Student Exchanges are one of the best ways to help achieve this and also develop life-long friendships between individual students, families and the people they meet during the exchange. Students are matched, where possible, with students of similar interest in the other country. You are invited to visit their comprehensive website: www.ranzse.com for:  Expression of Interest Forms – or see PDF below  Application Forms and dates RANZSE expression-of-interest-form-2019.pdf
