Rotorua Lakes High School “Mauria te pono - Keep steadfastly to the truth”

Kia ora Koutou, 2020 Donations Scheme – RLHS is opting in Dear Parents and Caregivers, Many of you will be aware of the Governments scheme to replace school donations with a $150 grant per student to Decile 1-7 schools if they choose to opt in. Rotorua Lakes High School qualifies under this criteria. When we first heard of the scheme we were delighted that this financial burden was being lifted from our community. We would all like to think that the dream of a free education for all is attainable. We waited for the detail to be developed by the Ministry with great anticipation. As this detail has developed it has been interesting that the stipulations around the $150 sum have grown significantly, so that now the figure not only covers what was the donation, but also a raft of other school elements. We firmly believe that we want and need to opt into the donation scheme starting in 2020 as this reduces financial expectations on our community. Having said that we have significant reservations about the constraints that this will impose on us as we try to ensure that we provide an engaging and powerful curriculum coverage. We will of course meet the requirements prescribed by the Ministry of Education. It means that some things are going to be tight as the $150 figure was not developed in consultation with schools but simply an arbitrary value developed for a Labour manifesto in the run up to the last election. Where we have to and can under the guidelines, we may ask for contributions. Our aim will be to always minimize these requests but I hope you understand that if we want to offer great opportunities for our students, those extras may require further support. Those items that are classified as ‘Take Home’ components of a course will be charged as part of a fee. Anything that is needed for a student to access the curriculum will be free. We will not charge for any compulsory activities. I have enclosed a link to give parents and caregivers further information on this.

https://www.education.govt.nz/assets/Documents/School/donations/MOE-Donations-Scheme-Info-A3-FA-Web18-OCT.pdf As always, if a whanau is struggling for whatever reason we can work out a support plan, financial or otherwise. Please contact us if this ever becomes the case. We hope that in time the Ministry of Education will reevaluate the scheme and recognize that the costs of curriculum and other delivery in the secondary environment exceed the monies offered in the donation scheme. We appreciate your support to give our students a great education. We also wish to recognize that the $150 goes a significant way to alleviating financial stresses on our community and commend the intent of the scheme. Jon Ward Principal on behalf of the RLHS Board of Trustees.

___________________________________________________________________________ YEAR 13 LEAVERS DINNER The Annual RLHS Year 13 Leavers Dinner will be held this year at the Rydges Hotel, Fenton Street on Thursday 5 December 2019. Parents and family are invited to attend. The evening will begin with drinks and a buffet meal, followed by a celebration of the achievements of all Year 13 students. This is a semi-formal occasion. A very tidy standard of dress is required (e.g. no jeans, t-shirts, jandals etc) and appropriate behavior is expected – no whistling, calling out etc. Students attending are under our normal school rules including no smoking and no alcohol. The only concession to these rules is those students who are with their parents or caregivers may have alcohol with their meal if purchased by their parents and are of legal age. No intoxicated persons will be admitted to the function. The school regards this dinner as a family celebration. Students must be accompanied by their parents/caregivers and are unable to purchase individual tickets for themselves. It is possible for students to be accompanied by another Lakes High student’s parent/caregiver but permission must be sought and approved before such a ticket can be bought. See Ms Howard. Names of all persons attending must be listed on the return section of the form. Current students of RLHS who are not Year 13 may not attend. Doors open 7 pm, seated for dinner 7.30 pm. Tickets are on sale from the school at student reception at a cost of $57 per person and must be shown at the door upon entry. Tickets cannot be charged to student accounts. Tickets must be purchased before

27 November 2019. For any other questions please contact Ms Howard howardh@rotorualakes.school.nz

JUNIOR WATERPOLO TRAINING Junior waterpolo training Thursdays 6.30 - 7.30 Games are Friday nights TERM 4

CAREERS Unison is holding a Women in Power field day for women on Monday 25th November. It is an opportunity for women to expand their knowledge of career opportunities in the electricity distribution industry, in particular on this day the role of Line Mechanic. The event will take place at Unison's Arawa substation on Te Ngae Rd. It will involve a number of hands-on activities for you to get a real taste of what the role of a line mechanic is, including a pole climb to low voltage level, elevated work platform ascent with operator, crane demo, earth stick applications, cable terminations and insulator binding exercises. Early next year Unison will be recruiting for two roles of trainee line mechanics, so this is a fantastic opportunity for females to develop an understanding about the position and meet some of Unison's staff. The training undertaken for the role of Line Mechanic takes 2 years to complete and once fully qualified staff earn a min of $30.84 per hour (as at 2019). Training and qualifications are paid for by Unison while trainees enjoy full time paid employment. (starting rates for a trainee line mechanic are 75% of the minimum line mechanic rate). __________________________________________________________________________________
