2017 SPANISH TRIP Article by Heather Richardson At the beginning of this term senior Spanish students arrived back from a very successful inaugural tour of Spain. As their teacher, I felt very privileged to be accompanying the following students, Eve Battersby, Marnie Bloor, Deanna Dodman, Ila Ford-Robertson, Jessica Jordan, Lana Moree, Isobel Tibble-Gotz, Erica Weblin and Kate Wilson, as they were all excellent travelling companions and great ambassadors for their school. We also travelled together with Spanish students from John Paul College and this was a huge success. I certainly appreciated the help and support of the JPC teachers and our accompanying parent, Brenda Rangitutia. Our students were entranced by the Spanish culture as they travelled through Madrid, Toledo, Cordoba, Seville, Valencia and Barcelona where local guides gave us tours. In Spanish, of course! Everyone was amazed at the grandeur and magnificence of the ancient buildings, especially La Alhambra. Another significant part of the tour was when the students attended a Spanish language school for a week and they received certificates for their efforts. Congratulations to Isobel Tibble-Gotz who topped her class with straight A’s. ¡Enorabuena Isabella!

SCIENCE AWARD TRUST - SCIENCE BADGES FOR YEAR 9 & 10 Rotorua Lakes High School is offering students the opportunity to enter into activities offered by the Science Award Trust, The Science Badge Scheme. The Science Badge Scheme is aimed at students in Year 7 to Year 10 although younger and older students also find it very valuable. Under the scheme, students have opportunity to study in depth a science topic of their choice. By completing a range of graded activities and exercises students gain a very attractive metal badge and an embossed certificate, which are awarded by the school when a minimum number of activities are completed. The activities are well within the capabilities of all students and it is hoped they may spark a lifetime interest in science and technology. HOW DOES IT WORK? Students choose a badge from a total of 29 available An Activity Sheet for that topic is purchased for $6.00 There are approximately 47 points per sheet. The student must complete 20 of these points Teachers mark each task then sign the sheet once it has been completed A badge and certificate is given to the student The badge scheme is designed for students to work on at home but the teachers will help them as much as we are able to support them through their chosen badge or badges. For more information see your Science Teacher for an order form. You can also get more information from the following website http://www.sciencebadges.co.nz/html/badges.html

INTERNATIONAL SUCCESS FOR LOUISE BENTLEY Article by Anita Bentley, Yr 13 student RLHS student, Louise Bentley, is making her mark on the international stage, drumming for the Simon Fraser University (SFU) Highland Pipe Band. Louise, left NZ in February, travelling to Canada to drum with the SFU Highland Pipe Band. Based in Vancouver, SFU is a top competing band, one of only four bands located outside the UK that have won the World Pipe Band Championships. Louise started drumming when she was 12 years old and is the youngest of four people from NZ, as well as the only side drummer to play for SFU this year. Last month, Louise travelled from Vancouver to Glasgow to compete with SFU at the British Championships. In August, she will travel to Scotland again, this time to compete at the world Pipe Band Championships with SFU. Even though she will not be playing with a NZ Band, she has been representing NZ at the highest level. We are very proud of Louise’s achievements. Well done!
______________________________________________________________________________ FROM THE LIBRARY BOOK OF THE MONTH The International Bestseller at present - Thirteen Reasons Why Clay Jensen returns home from school one day to find a mysterious box, with his name on it, lying on the porch. Inside he discovers 13 cassette tapes recorded by Hannah Baker - his classmate - who committed suicide two weeks earlier. On tape, Hannah explains that there are thirteen reasons why she did what she did - and Clay is one of them. If he listens, he'll find out how he made the list - and it'll change Clay's life forever.

RLHS BOYS RUGBY On Saturday 3 June RLHS Boys had a home game against combined JPC/Reporoa team. It was an exciting hard fought game with both sides scoring trys early in the match. Half time was 14 / 7 to us thanks to Mace Pomare and Jack Watson with 2 spectacular conversions from Hayden Everiss. Although RLHS were down 2 of our key players, JPC/Reporoa had to work hard for their eventual win. Well earned player of the day - Owen Clifford. Final Score: 14 / 19
Brilliant exciting game, keep going!

GIRLS SOCCER This week our two teams played each other in a friendly game well supported by parents and grandparents thank you! The First XI won by a considerable margin but it is wonderful to see the skills of the Social Team improving week by week. Next week both teams are playing away - the First XI in Taupo and the Social Team at Glenholme Reserve against JPC. Thanks to Sacha's mother, Paula for volunteering to help with transport.

BOYS SOCCER The first away game was a pleasant one against WHHS junior team which was being coached by some senior players. The teams were quite evenly matched. Heights got away 2 goals in the first half. For the second half our boys came back fighting and held possession for the half and gained a penalty in the last 2 minutes. Didi Lawson stepped up and scored a beautiful goal. Player of the day was Pascal Gea. We have a bye next week and then our final game in Taupo. ________________________________________________________________________________
BOYS HOCKEY A brisk night for a fast paced game against Tauhara as we vied for top place for the grading round. Lakes came out on fire and settled into a controlled period of strong defence and solid attacks. A goal was scored by Oliver English in a penalty corner later in the first half lifting the boys spirits. Second half saw the ball up and down the turf with good saves in our defensive line but unfortunately 1 got through from Tauhara. The boys remained controlled as Tauhara lifted again and the last nail-biting 10 mins saw Lakes pull out every last bit of energy they had to save balls on the line. Final score 1-1. Fantastic effort boys. POD - the whole team! _________________________________________________________________________________
MIXED XI HOCKEY TEAM We had another exciting game against JPC. Our students played really well, and are starting to work well together. We scored in the first few minutes of the game but unfortunately that was our last goal. Score was 1-5 to JPC. Player of the day was Cole Hedge who did an amazing job of defending our goal. Our student who came off in pain is recovering hopefully with no complications. Well done to Sam for getting back out there after a massive hit with the ball. Thanks to Rebecca for being a trooper and staying on the field although you where hurt too. That was the finish of our grading round. Well done team. Very proud of you all. _________________________________________________________________________________
LADIES 1ST XI HOCKEY TEAM Grading game Play-off this week to decide if we stay in B Grade or move up to A Grade; Lakes were missing a number of key players and started the match with only one sub on the bench. Ruamata unleashed a veritable storm of attacks from the first whistle and some brave defence kept the score sheet clean until 15 minutes when poor marking in the midfield was punished with a well taken goal. Sloppy tackling and lazy stick work allowed them to get their second after 20 minutes and just as RLHS were contemplating half time refreshments, and having had their first serious attempt at the Ruamata goal, they got a spectacular aerial third on the 25th minute mark. Half time 0-3. The second half was more evenly matched and the RLHS defence dug in to thwart the Ruamata attack. It was to our advantage that the opposition noticeably tired in the second half but sadly we were unable to convert any of our chances to goals despite some near misses. Nonetheless the RLHS goal survived intact at full time with the score still 3 - 0 in Ruamata’s favour and RLHS consigned to play out the rest of the season in B Grade; could this be a blessing in disguise? Player of the Day Stella Pinckney.
