Dear Parents/Caregivers
FROM THE PRINCIPAL _________________________________________________________________________ RLHS ATHLETICS SPORTS Wednesday 21 February was a surprisingly sunny day for the Rotorua Lakes High School Athletics sports. Students packed out the 6 field events and the many different track events to compete for the coveted Athletics Day house points. Throughout the day it was between Tikitapu and Tarawera with Rotokakahi narrowly missing out. Through sheer determination Tikitapu won and collected the most points. It was a fantastic day with students participating in at least 3 events. It was clearly evident that participation is the way to win with Tikitapu dominating the track events. The day was finished with the house relays, all houses showed tremendous house spirit and should be proud of their efforts. HERE ARE THE HOUSE POINTS AFTER YR 9 DAY 1 CHALLENGE AND ATHLETICS: Okareka =6 Rotokakahi

NUMERACY TESTING Numeracy testing has been completed for Year Nine students. This information is used to further understand students' numeracy strengths and weaknesses so teachers can differentiate instruction in classes. Some students may be offered small group numeracy support to accelerate their progress. If this is planned for your student you will get a letter home. If any parent/caregiver would like results from this testing please email kellyk@rotorualakes.school.nz. With numeracy results for (student and class) in the subject line. A response will be sent back within a few days. _______________________________________________________________________________________
READER / WRITER VOLUNTEERS FOR STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL ASSESSMENT CONDITIONS Students with some learning deficits are dependent on volunteers who support them by reading questions and/or writing responses for assessment tasks, either in class or at examinations. A Reader/Writer must be proficient at reading and writing at the required level; undergo a Police Vet, which the school does on your behalf; and the key requirement: be available during the day. For further information, please contact Anne Perrott by email perrotta@rotorualakes.school.nz _________________________________________________________________________________________
SCHOOL ACCOUNTS Parents / Caregivers please note that the first Account for school fees have been posted. We would appreciate payment as soon as possible please. NB: If you pay via internet banking, please ensure your child’s name is used as a reference. Our ASB account number appears on your invoice. A big Thank You to those parents who have already paid. Just a reminder, that all school fees must be paid in full before senior students can attend the school ball. If you would like to start up an automatic payment, we have forms for the bank at school. Please feel free to contact Student Reception. ________________________________________________________________________________________
GENERAL ACTIVITY DONATION Each year the school seeks from parents a $70 donation per student. This is included in the school fees account. This donation can be claimed as a charitable donation through Inland Revenue. At Rotorua Lakes High School we spend the donation on first aid supplies, school nurse, library donation and student diaries, and to support co-curricular activities. It is unfortunate that we need to seek charitable support from parents / whanau for so-called ‘free education’ but government grants to schools do not cover a lot of extras. Thank you very much to the parents / whanau who pay this voluntary donation.

BOP AREA SCHOOLS TEAM SHOW JUMPING Wednesday 28 February 2018 Report by Sarah Uhl Well done to Briley Jones, Emma Jackson, Bella Uhl and Jessica Moore who competed at the school showjumping last week! You guys were awesome and upheld our Lakes High prestige! It was totally cool that everyone was on time to all their classes and gave it a shot even though there were some mishaps with disobedient ponies. Congratulations to Jessica on her 4th placing and Bella for two 5th placings and a 6th. Well done also to Emma for having a double clear round on old Magic! Entertainment of the day went to Briley for somersaulting off her horse, and then carrying on into the Jump off! Welcome and thank you to Fiona Lambdin for helping on the day.
Coming up is the Edgecumbe Gamblers on Friday 23rd of March. This is a great event with a combination of Cross Country and Showjumping

MTB RACE REPORT by Ruby Ryan On the 24th February I competed in my speciality discipline, Cross Country (XCO) at the National Mountain bike Championships. This is New Zealand’s premier national mountain bike event, which attracts New Zealand’s top Cross Country Mountain Bike cyclists.
The event was hosted by Bike Wanaka - Lake Wanaka's Mountain Bike Club in the beautiful Cardrona Alpine Park. Wanaka is a thriving mountain town and with wilderness on it’s doorstep it makes Wanaka the perfect venue for the Championship event! However, just two days before the event, cyclone Gita hit. The snow that fell in the storm made the cross-country course unsuitable. The cross-country races had to move to the Wrights Farm at Hawea Flat, which left the organisers super-busy setting up the new venue for crosscountry race.
This track was not your average mountain bike track. It was dominated by constant uphill climbing with short, steep descents filled with multiple long and sharp rock gardens. I was excited to race this track as I feel it suited my riding style as I enjoy the technical descents and demanding riding conditions. It was an exciting race for me as I had an intense battle with another girl. My race nutrition went out the door this race with so many other things to think about and time to make up! I had consistent lap times and placed 3rd overall. This was my first year racing in the U19 category and I feel I gained valuable experience to build on for next year. Overall this was a successful race and bulk of my season, bring on next year for the battle of the NZ jersey! __________________________________________________________________________________________
DUKE OF EDINBURGH Congratulations to Clay Fookes and Sam Pinckney who completed their Silver Level Training over the weekend in the Kaimai Forest Park with an outside provider. They learned a range of new skills, including river crossings, navigation skills and bivouacking without tents in a remote location. A big thanks to Gerald Pinckney who assisted over the weekend in the training!
Other Opportunities with Gerry Purcell (Outside Provider): AJ = Adventurous Journey 17 & 18 March - part Gold level Training Course (Risk Management and River Safety), Tauranga/Karangahake (Applications close 28 February). 24-25 March (overnight) - Bronze level AJ (for those did their training earlier). 30 Mar - 2 Apr (Easter weekend) - I am shadowing a Gold practice Journey. Could have a separate party of Silver or Gold level doing the same Journey. (likely be in the Kaimais). April school holidays, 14-24 April - Lava Camp at Mt. Ruapehu, where participants can do Bronze or Silver level AJ Training and get one/two of their AJs completed. 12 & 13 May (not overnight) - part Gold level Training Course (Risk Management and River Safety), Tauranga/Karangahake (Applications close 28 February).
April school holidays - If there is enough interest I can arrange a Lava Camp at Mt. Ruapehu, where participants can do Silver level AJ Training and get one/two of their AJs completed.
