_________________________________________________________________________ ART OF REMEMBRANCE Article by Hannah Nathan As part of the 100 year commemorations of World War 1, Lakes High School Deputy Head Boy Leroy Nurkka entered in the Art of Remembrance multimedia competition, hosted by the Rotorua Museum. The competition was open to year 9-13 students from Rotorua, calling them to engage in WW1 centenary commemorations. Leroy painted a canvas of late Rotorua war nurse, Christabel MacFarlane, which will be judged along with other entrants over the following weeks, then later displayed in a public exhibition during the Anzac period. His painting highlights her connections to Rotorua through Mokoia Island, her British War Medal and Victory Medal achievements and the hospital boat on which she served on; SS Mareno. The Red Cross features in the painting, bordered by poppies to show respect to MacFarlane’s contribution to nursing and service to our country. The first prize for the Art of Remembrance is a $10,000 scholarship, generously donated by Ngati Whakaue Education Endowment Trust. We wish Leroy all the best.
