NZ SECONDARY SCHOOLS ROWING CHAMPS - MAADI CUP

The New Zealand Secondary Schools Rowing Champs (Maadi Cup) was held at Lake Karapiro last week. This is the biggest school sporting event in New Zealand which had a record breaking 2500+ competitiors. We had 4 students from Lakes High School attend this event, Callum August, Ella Fookes, Tegan Fookes, and Estelle Bilbe.

This is an extract from the Rowing New Zealand website:

The pre-penultimate final of the day – the under-18 novice double sculls final provided an absolute gem as Rotorua Lakes High School edged a thriller from Wanganui Collegiate by just 0.35. For much of the race the two crews matched each other stroke for stroke as Georgia Kerins and Grace Hogan of Wanganui and the Rotorua combination of Tegan and Ella Fookes desperately hunted victory. At the end of a gripping 2000m it was the Fookes’ pair who finished the stronger to shade an absorbing battle in 7:53.74 with Westlake Girls a distant third in 8:03.22.

Congratulations to New Zealand Secondary School under 18 novice double sculls champions Ella and Tegan Fookes.

Fantastic results – well done to all our students __________________________________________________________________________________

MOUNTAIN BIKING It was an exciting week for Mountain Biking with the National Secondary Schools Mountain Biking Championships running simultaneously with Crankworx. We had a team of 15 mountain bikers, all competing in different disciplines from XC, DH and a teams relay event.

Cross Country (XC)

The XC event was fiercely contested at all levels. Hamish Dodd won Gold (U20). Caitlin Dalziel had a major mechanical issue - her front brake failed. However, she continued to race undeterred and gained 4th place in the U20 female. Ruby Ryan was on top form and won Silver for the U17. Dylan Walton finished just outside the top ten and gained valuable racing experience.

Downhill (DH) The downhill race took place on the Fuzz, a very technical trail used in the Crankworx downhill event. The weather conditions were horrendous with torrential rain drenching the track. There were countless changes throughout the day including multiple changes to practice run times. At one point, it was uncertain if the event would even go ahead. Thankfully a decision was made to continue with the event and students lined up for the first practice runs at the shuttle. They returned covered in mud from head to toe but happy! Skye Follas had a spectacular run winning the U20 Female. Jake Johnston had a 'wild' ride down the hill finishing just outside the top 20. The remaining boys Ronan Jordan, Connor Thompson (U16), Finn Birchall, Taylor Forrest (U17) all had solid runs in very testing conditions.

XC Team Relay There were numerous changes to the track and the course for this event. We had a large contingent of U16 riders consisting of Aidan Krebs, Travis Roe, Connor Thompson, Dylan Walton, Jamie Trass, Jack Eggelston. Both teams had solid races with Dylan, Jamie and Jack placing 10th. The Senior boys team consisted of Downhillers (Jake Johnston, Finn Birchall and Sam Weir) who coped admirably with the hill climbs. The U20 girls team of Ruby Ryan, Skye Follas and Caitlin Dalziel were on a mission to gain a podium position. Ruby set off and maintained a spectacular pace throughout her three laps, which launched them into 2nd place. They continued to hold this position for the remaining six laps with Caitlin Dalziel charging to the finish line.

CRANKWORX EVENTS A number of students competed in events at Crankworx such as the Air DH and Downhill. The junior riders had solid race runs in the Youth 13-16 age group which included Aidan Krebs (12th) Travis Roe (14th) and Dylan Walton (16th). Skye Follas continued to excel in downhill, gaining a podium position and silver medal for the IXS event. Ronan Jordan also competed in the IXS DH event, dominating the technical rock sections and placing 11th. I would like to acknowledge the help and support of Kevin and Niki Walton who were team managers for the XC race and then helped out at the other events. It was fantastic to see so many parents at our base camp, your support was invaluable!!! WELL DONE TO ALL OUR STUDENTS – GREAT RESULTS!

FROM THE HEALTH & WELLNESS CENTRE Having head lice, also called nits, doesn't mean you're dirty. Children are most commonly affected, but anyone with hair can catch them. Head Lice are tiny insects that live in human hair. They're very small (about the size of a sesame seed) and are browny-grey in colour. They have six legs, each with a claw on the end. They use these to cling on to hair, and they survive by biting the scalp and feeding on blood. This often causes itching, but not always. The female head lice lay eggs in sacs that stick to individual hairs. A baby head louse then hatches 7 to 10 days later. If your child has head lice, you might be able to spot the remains of the tiny white egg in their hair. This is called a "nit". Some people also use the word "nit" to mean "head lice". The baby head louse is ready to have babies of its own 10 to 14 days later. Head lice crawl from head to head when you're close to someone who has them. Children are particularly at risk because they're often in close contact with other children at school. Head lice can't fly or jump, and it's very rare to get head lice from a pillow or a towel as they can't survive away from a human head for very long.

How to spot head lice: Head lice can be difficult to detect, even when you closely inspect your child's head. If you think your child may have head lice:  Check your child's hair. The most common places for head lice to lurk are in the hair behind the ears and at the nape of the neck.  If you still can't spot any lice, comb the child's hair with a special nit comb. These are available from most chemists. It's easier to spot head lice as they fall out if you comb the hair over a piece of white paper.

Treating head lice: If head lice are present, you need to treat your child. You should only treat your child if you find live head lice, which confirms a live infestation. Don't treat "just in case". Head lice are tough. They can't be killed by washing with normal shampoo or normal combing. Because they reproduce so quickly, you've got to kill them before they spread to others. If your child has head lice, check everyone in the family. You'll need to treat everyone affected to get rid of them. You can treat head lice by wet-combing hair with a special comb, or by using medicated lotions or sprays available over the counter at pharmacies.

Or: see Mrs. Pauline Murray (nurse) at the Health & Wellness Centre for treatment and to obtain a comb. __________________________________________________________________________________

SPORTS Hot off the Press from our Coaches and Managers

Hamish Dodd’s Mountain Bike Report Awesome to be back on a podium, and the best bit of a podium too! Secondary Schools National Champs was a great race for me and I’m so stoked to have (barely) won the top spot. It was an unusual race to prepare for, as I was trying to fit training into the schedule edgeways in the midst of catching up on schoolwork after being away for Nats and Oceanias. Things got even more unusual when some rubbish weather led to course alterations, so I had to find a balance of taking things as they came but not being too complacent as we lined up in the start grid. The race began with a brutal sprint up Nursery road, and after an incredibly uncoordinated start, I eventually clipped my foot in and clawed my way to the front of the leading pack. Taylor, Jack Maxwell and I stuck together all throughout the first three or so laps, so we were always pushing hard to keep the lead or stick on someone's wheel. The fourth lap came around about 45 minutes into the race and suddenly Jack and Maxwell had dropped off. Taylor and I kept pushing the intensity, and we swapped the lead more times than I can remember, until finally we neared the end of the last lap. Coming up the treacherously steep horse track climb, Taylor gave it a nudge and I had to dig deep to stay in front, and then just edged him out in a 48kph sprint finish. __________________________________________________________________________________

Unfortunately our coach, Manager and guru of the last umpteen years, Dave Parry, has retired and has left big shoes to fill. Dave Parry has kindly offered to organize the draw which will see us playing against WHHS, JPC, RGHS, Taupo-nui-a-tia and Tauhara.

WE NEED A COACH PLEASE!
