The Bay of Plenty Trades Academy (BOPTA) was founded in 2009 with Trident High School being appointed the lead provider to help establish one of the first of eleven Trades Academies in the nation by the Ministry of Education. Since this time, BOPTA has involved over 34 secondary schools/ kura across the Bay through a comprehensive network of Trade Academy Hubs to support students to experience Tertiary Trades training as part of their high school experience. These hubs include the regions and subregions of the Eastern Bay of Plenty, Rotorua, Taupo, Tauranga and Tokoroa. In partnership with Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology, Te Wananga o Aotearoa, EmployNZ, YOOBEE Colleges, and NZ Welding Trades and Services, BOPTA provides Level 1,2 and 3 Trades courses that support students to experience success through: 1. Tertiary Trades Training while in High School. 2. Hands-on learning. 3. Improved pathways into trades employment, apprenticeships, and/or further training that supports the Bay of Plenty’s regional growth. The types of Trades courses offered to students include: Carpentry and Construction, Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Automotive, Automotive Engineering, Wood Manufacturing, Hospitality, Hair and Beauty, Food and Beverage, Tourism, Digital Publishing and IT, Graphic Design and Animation, Exercise and Sports Coaching Student’s Trades Academy experience will depend on the individual interest and the levels of coursework students enroll in. 1. Level 1 courses: are courses offered once a week for 10 weeks, where students can gain “a taste” of several different industries over a school year 2. Level 2 courses: are courses offered once a week for 30 weeks, offering students a more in-depth skills and training experience in one particular Trade 3. Level 3 courses: are courses offered twice a week for 30 weeks, where students can attain an industry certificate or pathway directly into apprenticeships, trades employment or further Tertiary level training Students will be out of school for 1 or day’s a week for the duration of the course selected.
