Kia ora Koutou, I want to start this week’s message highlighting information about our Sports Leadership Development Programme launching in 2021. In the following pages you will see an outline of the programme and also an application form for those who wish to apply. Next week I will be putting out information for scholarships available to Year 8 students coming into Year 9 to support their applications for this programme. We are really excited about how this is coming together and have appreciated the positive feedback from our community regarding this being developed.

Looking forward to Tuesday next week when we have our annual Top Town event which always guaranteed fun for students and staff alike.

Junior students will have received back their grades from the junior exams completed at the beginning of last week.

These will be given in reports coming out shortly but please take the time to ask your student how they got on.

Sports Leadership Development Programme (SLDP) Information and Application Form The Sports Leadership Development Programme is a training and support programme designed to assist talented students to reach their sporting potential, as well as achieving academic success. Our training and support programme is intended to be a stepping stone to further achievements at a regional and national level. It will also increase the sporting and academic achievement level within RLHS. The SLDP will support all codes that benefit our students and wider community.

KEY OUTCOMES • Improving levels of fitness, skill, commitment and physical and mental toughness within the individual athlete.

• Promoting a measured and intelligent approach within the athlete towards their chosen sport.

• Developing a strong junior development programme for each code to ensure continued success at the senior level of competition.

• Showing loyalty to our students who have put in the effort and time to better themselves as sports people.

• Instilling a sense of pride and humility in our athletes through being a part of a focused group taking part in their programme.

• Offering new opportunities, to listen and learn from specialists in areas such as fitness and training techniques, sports nutrition, sports psychology and code specific skills.

• Ensuring continued improvement and success of our student athletes on the sports field and in the classroom.

• To provide students with long term sports related life skills.

• To develop students within the programme who are positive role models for other sports people and students within the school.

CRITERIA FOR BEING SELECTED FOR THE PROGRAMME – AT LEASE ONE OF THE FOLLOWING ELEMENTS • NZ title/representative in their chosen sport.

• The students being selected/representing Rotorua, BOP that compete at a national level.

• Local/Regional Titles in an individual sport.

• Top three in their chosen sport either local or regional competitions.

• Good academic behaviour and attendance records at school.

• Contract signed.

• A proven track record.

• References.

• Students who show clear promise and skills that are likely to develop to achieve these criteria are also eligible to apply.

CRITERIA FOR BUILDING YOUNG LEADERS IN OUR SCHOOL The individual demonstrate the following: • Respect for others.

• Humility.

• Empathy.

• Problem solver.

• Positive person.

CRITERIA FOR MAINTAINING A PLACE IN THE SLDP • Be involved and fulfil all team requirements in school team (or club if no school team available) in the sport for which the student is participating in the SLDP. • Maintain satisfactory academic progress made in other classes at school (grade point average > 2).

• Exhibit a satisfactory level of behaviour at all times, both inside and outside of school.

• Maintain satisfactory attendance at school and to all classes (> 85%).

• Continually demonstrate a high level of effort and skill to the satisfaction of the SLDP staff in all aspects of the programme, • Wear the SLDP uniform during practical classes.

• Seniors will demonstrate leadership to promote active lifestyle.

• Excellence in relevant SLDP academic assessments.

• A consistent effort to develop their own success and support the leadership of others.

• Complete all school work to the best of your ability, so we should not hear from your teachers that you did a poor job, or that you rushed the work.

• Complete all assessments on time. If you are asked to give up your time to fix the work, you must comply.

• Be in the right class at the right time, unless authorised by the SLDP Manager.

• Use study time for study and training time for training.

• Do not talk back to or bad mouth teachers, support staff, or volunteers.

• Support fellow peers to do their best.

• Do not be a bystander if you see something inappropriate happening.

• Wear your school uniform correctly

PROGRAMME ELEMENTS • Specific training for their chosen sports codes.

• Skills training.

• Specific knowledge training (nutrition, game days, trainings, greater understanding of their chosen game/sport).

• Junior and Senior programmes.

• Programme writing / fitness testing.

• Achievement standards.

The programme will vary dependant on working around competitions and seasonal approaches and will involve guest speakers, trips to facilities and possibly camps.

THE TWO TIERS OF SLDP • Tier 1: Students are in the SLDP team class and have an SLDP study line available. The students and their class will meet regularly with the SLDP Manager to go over student goals, and monitor their progress.

• Tier 2: Students who were previously in SLDP tier 1 or do not currently meet the criteria or expectations of tier 1. These students will be in their own House Group however the SLDP Manager will be monitoring their progress throughout the year and setting them goals to return to/engage in SLDP tier 1.

UNDERSTANDING GRADE POINT AVERAGE (GPA) • Grade Point Average is a score based on the marks you achieve in your assessments and is averaged out over all of the assessments you complete. The scoring is as follows.

• Excellence - 4 • Merit - 3 • Achieved - 2 • Not Achieved - 0

NEWS ___________________________________________________________________________ TOP TOWN Top Town is Tuesday 1 December. This is a fun day for students to compete in some fun activities on the fields at school. Students will come to school in their junior PE Gear and bring a change of clothes / jersey / towel as they will probably get wet. They also need to wear sunblock and bring a drink bottle and hat. It would be great to have all our Juniors participate.

Junior Prizegiving will be held on Tuesday 8 December 2020 at 12 noon in the DC Price Auditorium.

A warm invitation is extended to all parents / caregivers to attend.

Please be seated before 12 noon.

___________________________________________________________________________ YEAR 13 LEAVERS DINNER - updated As you know, the Annual RLHS Year 13 Leavers Dinner will be held this year at the Te Puia, on Tuesday 8 December 2020. The evening will begin with drinks and a buffet meal, followed by a celebration of the achievements of all Year 13 students.

This is a semi-formal occasion. A very tidy standard of dress is required (e.g. no jeans, t-shirts, jandals etc) and appropriate behavior is expected – no whistling, calling out etc.

Students attending are under our normal school rules including no smoking and no alcohol. The only concession to these rules is those students who are with their parents or caregivers. They may have alcohol with their meal if purchased by their parents and are of legal age. No intoxicated persons will be admitted to the function.

Students must be accompanied by their parents/caregivers and are unable to purchase individual tickets for themselves. It is possible for students to be accompanied by another Lakes High student’s parent/caregiver but permission must be sought and approved before such a ticket can be bought. See Ms Howard.

Current students of RLHS who are not Year 13 may not attend.

Doors open 6 pm, seated for dinner 6.30 pm.

Last day for tickets is Thursday 24 November 2020.

We remind all senior students to keep up with their NCEA external revision.

NCEA exams will commence for our students on 16 November 2020.

SLIPS MUST BE BROUGHT TO EACH AND EVERY EXAM.

All students to sign in and out at the Duty Dean’s office.

Reminders for exams Students need to arrive early, be in full school uniform, including being clean shaven.

If there are any issues, parents / caregivers / students should contact Ms J Sturme as soon as they arise.

___________________________________________________________________________ CHARTER BUS Please note the charter bus will leave at 1.45 pm on Tuesday 8 December.

The first day for the charter bus next year will be Tuesday 2 February 2021 normal time.

A term pass for the charter bus costs $200 A 10 ride pass costs $30 Payable at student reception

___________________________________________________________________________ LOST PROPERTY We have a number of items in lost property. Please check at student reception. Items will be re-sold or given to charity if not collected by the end of term.

___________________________________________________________________________ THE RUGBY SHOP HOLIDAY OPENING HOURS The Rugby Shop will close Friday the 18th December 2020 at midday and be reopened on Monday the 11th January 2021.

Normal operating hours are:

7.30am to 4.30pm 7.30am to Midday

Mon – Thursday Friday

For uniform sales, opening hours are on the following Saturday Mornings from 9am to 1.00pm January 23rd / January 30th / February 6th 2021 • Orders can be placed through The Rugby Shop website that has pay pal facilities available, along with pricing for any estimates that may be required.

• It is recommended that if parents are unsure of sizing that they bring their children into the shop for sized fitting.

SENIOR UNIFORM FOR 2021 YEAR 12 STUDENTS

A reminder to parents of this year’s Year 11 students that they will need to buy the new Senior Uniform for their students going into Year 12 next year and then on to Year 13 the following year:

GIRLS need a plain blue skirt and a white shirt.

BOYS need a white shirt.

All items can be purchased from The Rugby Shop. There may be some second-hand items available through the school.

Donations of old uniform will be gratefully accepted by the school – thank you.

Year 13 camp 2021 from the 23 – 26 February Cost $200 (approx.)

Camp is an amazing opportunity for students to develop leadership skills, build and foster school and house spirit, team building, personal challenges, and have adventures.

___________________________________________________________________________ NZQA Students should be logging into their area on the NZQA site (www.nzqa.govt.nz) regularly to check their entries for externals, current results and how they link to Pathways and also they can see their personalised exam timetable. All they need is their NSN (this is on all the tracking reports and can be accessed through the KAMAR and Schoolpoint portals). We strongly encourage students to do this often!

FROM OUR DEPARTMENTS ___________________________________________________________________________ ENGLISH DEPARTMENT NOVEL RETURN All novels which have been issued to Year 12 and 13 students should be returned to school as soon as possible.

There will be a box in the foyer of the Auditorium where students can return their novels on the way into their English Exam. Alternatively, they can be returned to Student Reception. Students will be invoiced for any novels which are not returned by one week after their English Exam.
