YEAR 13 LEAVERS DINNER The Year 13 Leavers dinner will be held on Wednesday 7 December at Rydges Hotel at 7 pm.  Tickets must be presented at the door.  All students must be accompanied by a Parent/Caregiver.  Permission slips are available at student reception.

Thank you. _______________________________________________________________________________ SENIOR UNIFORM FOR 2017 YEAR 12 STUDENTS A reminder to parents of this year’s Year 11 students that they will need to buy the new Senior Uniform for their students going into Year 12 next year and then on to Year 13 the following year:  GIRLS need a plain blue skirt and a white shirt.  BOYS need a white shirt.

All items can be purchased from Bill Davis Outdoor World. There may be some second-hand items available through the school.

MATHS DEPARTMENT MATHS HOMEWORK CENTRE The Maths Department Homework Centre has finished for the year. Thank you to all the students who attended. We look forward to seeing you all again next year.

SPORTS Hot off the Press from our Coaches and Managers ________________________________________________________________________________ LAKES DREAM TEAM Another tough game this week resulted in a 5-1 loss. The team played extremely well and continued with their great team work. Player of the day went to Tyra Wiseman for her excellent all round play and crucial set up for our goal that was scored.

________________________________________________________________________________ DUKE OF EDINBURGH Below are upcoming opportunities for tramps:

Gold level Adventurous Journey Training     

10/11 December, comprising an Outdoor Training NZ (OTNZ) Risk Management in the Outdoors Course, commencing at 0900 (9 am) at the Welcome Bay Community Centre.

Then late afternoon we travel to Dickey Flat Campsite, Karangahake Gorge, north of Waihi, camp overnight, participants give a 7-10 minute presentation (on an outdoor subject I will give them a week prior to course), set-up and operate a Mountain Radio, cook their own meals.

Sunday we do an OTNZ River Crossing/Safety Course, during which participants, and their packs, will get wet.

The course should conclude by 1500 (3 pm) on the Sunday afternoon at Dickey Flat Campsite.

Cost will be $25.

REMINDER - You do not necessarily have to have completed your Bronze or Silver Award, before doing the Silver or Gold level training.

LAVA CAMP - at Mt. Ruapehu, 29 December to 5 January 2017.

Bronze, Silver or Gold Journeys. May also be able to do Bronze and Silver level training. Can include mountain peaks, the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, Tongariro Northern Circuit, Round the Mountain Track. Will be dependent on number of experienced adults available to shadow/assess hiking parties.

CAREERS DEPARTMENT NEWS BRIDGING THE GAP 2016! ________________________________________________________________________________________

PARENTS 101: ADVICE FOR THE BIG TRANSITION As the year’s end rapidly approaches, families are no doubt focusing on the immediate prospect of Year 13 exams and results. But most likely, they’re also thinking seriously about tertiary study in 2017. The transition from secondary school to university is exciting and challenging for students – but we’re also very mindful that parents are making a parallel shift!

And so we’ve published the University of Auckland Parents’ Guide, which is full of useful information about study here.

The publication includes sections about various degree programmes, student support services, Auckland City, accommodation, the application process, and fees amongst other topics. You can download a copy from our website or order a printed copy by phoning 0800 61 62 63.

Practical advice: school subject choices As well as information about University systems and services, we also offer practical advice for parents who wish to support their son or daughter’s study decisions at school.

These bear directly on their chances of acceptance into those University programmes that have “required subjects”, which students need to have passed at school. You can help steer things in the right direction by consulting the University’s 2017 Subject Guide for School Students (suitable for students Years 9 to 12). We recommend encouraging young people to enrol in subjects that really interest and motivate them rather than what might be perceived as highly career focused or more prestigious. Career-specific planning is definitely beneficial, but we also know that employers value all sort of subjects that aren’t overtly vocational in nature. Parents could also use some of the career-planning tools on the Careers New Zealand website. These help young people to identify and plan towards potential career paths. There’s also a module for parents.

Please see Mrs Oldman in the careers office to access this database.  Applications for many Scholarships have either closed or closing soon so please check the closing dates and details required from the University or Polytechnic website. ________________________________________________________________________________________

RLHS GATEWAY/COMMUNICATION & LEADERSHIP COURSE Congratulations to the following students who participated in The Learning Place Communication and Leadership course which was held this term: Harley Cassel, Sam Chadwick, Dylan Collett, Corban Frederick, Jackie Downs, Josh Elia, Tuhi George, Elijah Gran-Kapua, Kawhina Hohepa, Quinn Moore, Andries Notnagel, Shania Parkinson, Stace Pomare, Logan Rangitutia, Rikijean Rangitutia, Dion Rose, Ray Smith and Natalie Wisse. The course included three Unit Standards: Describe teams and team leadership; Contribute within a team or group which has an objective; Give and respond to feedback on performance and was held over two days. The course was based around Team Building and being a Team Leader and a Team Member. Students were required within their teams to find solutions to a number of scenarios both practical and hypothetical. All students worked well together and successfully completed the course. Well done to you all!

ROTORUA LAKES HIGH SCHOOL – “PARENTS IN PARTNERSHIP” A CAREERS & GATEWAY INITIATIVE Our 2016 Gateway Programme has had another successful year in supporting 110 students having the opportunity to gain experience in the workforce while gaining credits towards their NZQA results. Many of these students were supported by local businesses including: Retail, Hair and Beauty, Engineering, Medical, Swimming, Early Childcare, Health and Safety, First Aid, Leadership, Barista and Wood Manufacturing.

Completing a Gateway placement gives students the opportunity to experience first-hand what a career path in these industry areas would involve and help determine the subject choices which may need to be made to support these career choices.

The Careers Department Gateway Programme is achieving strong growth within the School. To help us to achieve the best outcomes and results for students, this is being shared with you, to gain expressions of interest from Parents/Caregivers/Whanau who own or manage a business and who would be willing to provide a Gateway placement and or work experience for our Senior students. We envisage students being placed in a business for 1 Day a week for 10 weeks.

If you are interested in being part of the Rotorua Lakes High School – PARENTS IN PARTNERSHIP” programme, please complete the following form and return it to the Careers Department by the start of the school year 2017.

COMMUNITY NOTICES

We are looking for a caring, supportive homestay family for an 11 year old Japanese International student. He will be attending Mokoia Intermediate School for the 2017 school year. Previous experience with international students is not essential.

It is preferable for the student to be within walking distance from school, if possible.

The homestay fee is $230.00 per week.
