As I write my end of year article for the newsletter, reflecting on the past year, I am so proud and happy with the achievements and accomplishments of our students. These achievements have been made possible with the support of parents / caregivers and through the dedication of our staff who work tirelessly to provide opportunities for all our young people to grow and learn. Your partnership, as families, has been invaluable and I am grateful for your commitment and support. To all our students - I remember encouraging you all to go beyond your limit. I have been fortunate to watch step-by-step and day-by-day - your course was steadfast and you never lost sight of your goals. I can only applaud that kind of determination, that purposeful resolve to get where you need to be - even when it may not always have been very easy. Well done - you seized wonderful opportunities, academic, cultural and sporting and made them your own. We are indeed proud! Now, a long summer vacation lies ahead of you. Don’t just sit there and let the time tick away. Plan your holiday well. Go outdoors and explore places you have never been to. Have fun with your friends and family, and do something worthwhile. Youth is too precious a thing to waste. Seize the day! To our Year 13 students who are embarking on their journeys away from RLHS – I wish you all success and happiness and remember once a RLHS student always a RLHS student! Finally, as always, I would like to thank all our hardworking and dedicated staff without whom RLHS would not be as successful as it is.

Wishing you all happy, safe and enjoyable holidays.

Yours sincerely,

Principal

DUKE OF EDINBURGH AWARDS

ORB is here, it's happening and it's time to jump on board! Here's what you need to know about the upcoming move from paper-based record books to the new version of the Online Record Book (ORB). From 1 January 2018, all new registrations will need to be completed using the latest version of the Online Record Book (ORB), rather than the paper-based book system. Taking the registration process online will have significant benefits for both Award Leaders and Participants – current users say they have found it faster and easier to use, and that they have more oversight of Participants during their Award journey. It also aligns the Award with the digital world that Participants operate in today, and brings New Zealand into line with what other countries – such as Australia and Canada – have been doing for some years now. What do I need to do? If you’re already using it – nothing! If you’re not, please go to www.onlinerecordbook.org and register as a new Award Unit (the link you need is located at the bottom right of the first screen). Note that this is the NEW web address for ORB - it replaces the one used previously. Once you’ve set-up your Award Unit, Participants can start registering themselves online. Try creating a ‘test’ Participant yourself, so you can go through the process of registering and completing the Award activities. That way you’ll know how to answer any questions they might come to you with if they have problems registering! What devices can I access ORB on? While ORB is a web-based tool which you can access from any PC, Mac, laptop or tablet, there's also an ORB App for both Award Leaders and Participants to use on their smartphones: Award Leaders with: Apple iPhones (using a minimum of iOS version 10.0) can download ORB at: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/orb-leader/id1215719412?mt=8 Android smartphones (using a minimum of Android version is 4.1) can download ORB at: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.dofe.dofeleader Participants with: Apple iPhones (using a minimum of iOS version 10.0) can download ORB at: https://itunes.apple.com/app/orb-participant/id1215719234?mt=8 Android smartphones (using a minimum of Android version is 4.1) can download ORB at: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.dofe.dofeparticipant We’re already rolling out ORB training across the country through the regional hub networks (we've trained more than 250 Award Leaders to date), and will continue this face-to-face training next year, backed up with phone and email support.
