IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR PARENTS / CAREGIVERS / STUDENTS _________________________________________________________________________________ PASSING EXAMS SEMINAR International author, speaker and trainer, Patrick Sherratt will be visiting Rotorua again to present his interactive and entertaining exam-preparation seminar to our senior students. In this two-hour presentation, Patrick will offer a fivestep approach to prepare for exams while building in solutions to many of the common challenges students face in the lead up to exams. If your son or daughter is having problems getting motivated to study, procrastinates, gets distracted easily, has a poor memory or suffers from exam nerves, this will be a "must-attend" seminar. Past students have highly recommended this presentation: Amazing Seminar. This has completely changed my outlook on school exams and the preparation process associated with it. Amazing! It was totally me. I found the seminar described the faults I had with school work, study habits and focussing and showed me ways to fix them. Thank you so much!
Held in the school library from 11.30 am – 1.30 pm on Wed 2nd August 2017, this seminar will cost $15 per person. A registration letter is available from student reception. If you would like your student to attend, please sign and return the letter. Payments can be made at the school office from 24 July 2017 or email Mrs D McLeod mcleodd@rotorualakes.school.nz For more information about Patrick’s work, please visit: www.passingexams.co.nz _________________________________________________________________________________ LOST PROPERTY Lost property is being held at Student Reception until end of Week 1 Term 3 for students to collect.
AFTER FRIDAY 28 JULY any items left will be disposed of.

____________________________________________________________________________ VISUAL ARTS New Year 9 and 10 Art options: If your son or daughter is in these new options for Term three, they will need to purchase an art pack from the school, unless they already have equipment and materials they can use. They are priced at $19.00 and include an A3 sketchbook, high quality drawing pencils (graphite and watercolour), an eraser, sharpener, a synthetic sable paintbrush, a large manila folder, and a permanent ink pen. They are sourced in bulk from Auckland and are cheaper than materials available locally in shops. Many other resources and materials are provided by the department at no charge to complete their projects. The packs will be given to the students on the first day of class. Congratulations to Antonia Van Sitter, Year 13 Visual Arts Design and Painting student, who has been selected to sit on the Rotorua Lakes Council public arts selection panel, as the "Youth Voice" in the processes of choosing major funded arts projects in our community. Congratulations, Antonia, we are very proud of this achievement and how you will represent our school in the community.
Senior students have much to do in the upcoming holidays and term three. With the interruption of pre-lims next term and the pressures of meeting due dates, students will have to budget their time wisely in order to complete their portfolios (external assessments). The due dates for these will be at the end of term three, so please be sure your son or daughter are making good use of class time and working at home regularly to meet the deadlines. Please make contact with your son/daughters' teachers if you have any concerns ________________________________________________________________________________
SPORTS Hot off the Press from our Coaches and Managers ________________________________________________________________________________
FORMER RLHS STUDENT IS UP THERE WITH THE WORLD’S BEST! Former RLHS student, enduro rider Daniel Self, is showing that when it comes to going fast, if you can keep up with your schoolmates in Rotorua, then you have a pretty good chance of keeping up with the world’s best! Chasing his mates in the Rotorua Lakes High School Mountainbike Club has proved to be great for developing the skills required to compete at world level. After Round Four of the eight round World Enduro Series Daniel is sitting comfortably in second place in the Junior (Under 21) class. He has focused on riding smoothly and consistently, finishing every stage without any major mechanical issues or crashes. "I've set my bike up with a solid build that I know will minimise the chances of not finishing a race due to mechanical problems. This includes riding on heavy downhill tyres, as I am willing to sacrifice weight saving if it stops me from getting flat tyres mid race. On July 1 Daniel will race the fifth round in France. "Rounds six and seven are in Canada and USA, and I'm really focused on putting in some solid results here in the hopes of generating interest from the USA based bike manufacturers. I've got a bit of local support and great back up from Yeti and Bike Culture, but travelling and racing as a privateer is expensive and has a lot of challenges which can make it hard to focus entirely on the race. So far the Enduro World Series events have been held in Rotorua, Tasmania, Madeira (Portugal) and Ireland. "Racing in Rotorua was pretty special with family and friends there to cheer you on, it certainly made a hard day a little more manageable!" Despite the sport being a gravity-orientated race, riders can spend as much as 7 hours on the bike during a race day. This is because they race not one, but six or seven downhill specific race stages with the combined time of all stages determining the overall race result. Riders are required to pedal back up the hill for the each race stage which makes for a grueling day out. After nearly a month’s break since the last race in Ireland, Daniel is now getting ready to take on the world’s best once more this weekend in Millau (France). We
wish him all the very best! ________________________________________________________________________________
DUKE OF EDINBURGH NEWS Congratulations to all the candidates who have qualified and registered for the next level of the award this year thus far! It has been great to see you all out there contributing to your community through your volunteer services, and improving your fitness and learning new skills. Also, welcome to all the new candidates that have registered for Bronze level! Fantastic to see such a large number of keen and eager students ready to take on the challenge. The following dates can be put into your diaries for trainings and tramps coming up in the spring holidays and beyond. They are run by Gerry Purcell, who is the Bay of Plenty "hub" coordinator for DoE, and an OTNZ Bushcraft Instructor, who has helped our candidates over the past many years. Parents and helpers are always welcome to attend these tramps and trainings, so please put your hand up at any time to accompany your son or daughter. They are a great way to create lasting memories and enjoy the outdoors with a great bunch of kids and like-
minded adults. Group emails will be sent out to those wishing to participate on each trip, to organise transport and ride-sharing. DATES: DoEIA Expedition Training Courses and Practice Expeditions during and after the October school holidays: Bronze Training 9 & 10 October; Silver Training 11/12 October; Bronze Practice Expedition 14/15 October; Silver Practice or Qualifying & Gold Practice Expeditions 20-23 October (Tongariro National Park); Gold Training 24-26 November; Gold Qualifying Expedition 4-9 December (Tongariro National Park). All dates will be confirmed in early September and may be subject to change due to weather etc. There are a few changes afoot with the award, firstly the name of the award has been changed to, "Duke of Edinburgh's International Award Aotearoa - Hillary Award". The National Office has issued a new (International) Handbook, which we are now to follow. These changes should have no impact on participant’s time commitments or other aspects of their Award progression. There have been significant fee increases as of July 1, and an electronic book will be used at some point this year, rather than the printed book. Gerry Purcell will be attending a National hui for hub leaders, and I look forward to getting updates from him after this meeting. Participant Fees Bronze & Silver Award registration fee Gold Award registration fee
old fees $37.50 $37.50
from July 1st 2017 $86.25 $115.00
Please feel free to contact the Award Leader, Mrs. Carlan-Riddell at carlans@rotorualakes.school.nz at any time with questions, or visit the Duke of Ed' website, http://www.dofehillary.org.nz/. ________________________________________________________________________________
GIRLS HOCKEY Girls 1st XI Hockey had a difficult grading game against JPC on Tuesday, who are in the grade above. Our team played with spirit and fought hard to make it a very close game. Unfortunately we came away with a 2 -1 loss, but many players had the opportunity to shine, including Tyra Wiseman who came away with Player of the Day. We were lucky enough to have many parents and staff there to support, and look forward to putting on a great display next term.
Our wonderful coach, Mark Smithells, has put together a holiday coaching session. Could all players be at the school turf on Saturday 22nd July from 10.30 till about 12.30. Goalie and a couple of girls required from 9.30am.

GIRLS SOCCER Our 1st XI had their last game for the term on Wednesday. They played Reporoa which is a new team - enthusiastic but inexperienced. We won 4:nil despite having only ten players on the field, sickness claiming the others. It was a very pleasant game for the spectators, partly because our girls played some solid passing football, intelligent and controlled. Eleanor Crowley shone in this regard and was chosen by Dave Parry as Player of the Day. Goals were scored by Katherine Hingston (two), Asty Bosley, Maggie Donovan-Cotter who came out of her goalie's uniform and let Sarah Sanderson take over. Our Social 2nds had a bye this week. A reminder to the girls to PLEASE let us know in plenty of time if you are unavailable to play!!!

UNIVERSITY OF OTAGO ENTRANCE SCHOLARSHIPS The following information and update has been received from The Entrance Scholarships Team at the University of Otago. Just a quick update and reminder about the fast-approaching closing date for applications to Entrance Scholarships. The scholarship application period closes at midnight (NZDT) on Monday, 14 August. At this stage, there are many students who have started applications but are yet to submit them. REMINDER - in order to be considered in the Scholarship selection round, their application needs to be submitted by the deadline. If a student is unsure if their application/s are submitted, they can check by logging in to their eVision portal and then selecting the ‘My scholarships and awards’ tab. There are some issues around accessing the ‘apply now’ button for the scholarship application portal. In order to access the scholarship application portal, the student needs to have submitted an application to their chosen programme. Completing the enrolment process will provide the student with a University of Otago student identification number and login access to the scholarship application portal. We understand that some students are still undecided about what they would like to study in 2017, but they are able to change these details up until March, 2017. The following link contains the academic key dates such as course advice days and the dates for programme changes and adding or deleting papers: http://www.otago.ac.nz/news/events/keydates/. Another area that has generated a few questions is around providing verification of results. For students studying NCEA, a PDF copy of the unofficial transcript that can be downloaded from the NZQA website is sufficient to provide as evidence of the most up-to-date results. This upload is not compulsory, so if a student cannot acquire a transcript this will not prevent them from submitting an application. Please let us know if you have any further questions.
