SWIM ROTORUA TEAM Last week Rebecca Reid competed as part of the Swim Rotorua Team at the National Division II Swimming Competition which was held at the Rotorua Aquatic Centre. More than 480 swimmers from 12 -18 years competed. Swim Rotorua had unprecedented success with 16 National medals – 10 of which were Gold and the Club ended up 8th out of 101 Clubs from all over New Zealand. Rebecca was a crucial part of the Team’s success racing massive personal best times and being a courageous and supportive team member. This was Rebecca’s first national competition and she raced four events placing 7th in 400 freestyle having knocked off 13 seconds. Rebecca also broke the 30 second 50 freestyle barrier in two Club relays helping Swim Rotorua place 5th against much older teams.
Well done!

NORTH ISLAND SECONDARY SCHOOL ROWING CHAMPIONSHIPS Estelle Bilbe, Tegan Fookes and Ella Fookes are in their first season of Rowing. These girls competed at the recent North Island Secondary Schools Rowing Regatta. They made finals in all their events. Ella and Tegan Fookes continued their winning streak taking out the gold medal in the U18 Novice Double Sculls. This combination has remained unbeaten all season. Estelle Bilbe raced for the first time in the U16 single sculls and had a great race making the B final Tegan & Ella Fookes which places her in the top 16 in the North Island. Awesome results! Estelle and Tegan also competed in the U16 Double sculls just missing out on an A final, but convincingly winning the B final. The Maadi cup is the next event which is North & South Island Secondary Schools. The girls will be joined at Maadi by year 13 student Callum August who has been rowing for four years. He will race in the U17 single sculls.

YEAR 13 CAMP
This year’s Year 13 Camp was exhausting, but hugely rewarding. From 6.30 in the morning until after the sun had long set, students were active with everyone enthusiastic to give everything they had. Bonds were established and students gained a greater understanding of their peers and expressed what the true Lakes High Culture meant to them. It is our hope that this feeling of support and team work will prove invaluable as seniors of the school. We battled with the typical 4 seasons in 1 day of New Zealand and students remained upbeat, positive and enthusiastic throughout. The rain was never going to get them down. Over the four days students took part in various teambuilding activities, surfed, learnt goal setting and relaxation techniques, swam, performed in night-time concerts and skits as well as many other activities. Thank you to the staff who came along Martin Godfrey, Paula Short, Dean Shelford, Alana Kairaoi, Simone Hamilton, Annie Scott, Marion Forbes and parent help from Chris Sutton and all the wonderful photos he supplied. You all make a superb team. The teachers particularly enjoyed watching the annual Beach Team Building activity and were delighted with the sportsmanship and spirit shown throughout the entire weekend. The teachers all agreed that this years’ group has the potential to be the best year 13 group ever. Now it is up to them! We are thankful to all the teaching staff who took time out to have this experience and in particular to Ms Haana Howard for her hard work and fantastic organisation skills. _______________________________________________________________________________

“LOVES ME NOT” PROGRAMME This year we will again be running the "Loves Me Not" programme with our year 12 students in conjunction with the New Zealand Police. What is Loves-Me-Not? Loves-Me-Not is a ‘whole-school approach’ to prevent abusive behaviour in relationships. It is based on a student inquiry learning process, where students take action (personal action, effective bystander action and community action) to prevent harm from relationship abuse. Loves-Me-Not is designed for Year 12 students as the appropriate age to discuss relationship abuse and to start to take action for change.
What are the aims of Loves-Me-Not? Loves-Me-Not aims to: assist schools that are seeking to support student well-being through a whole-school approach encourage and empower young people to absolutely reject abuse in relationships encourage young people to be safe and active bystanders who take action against unhealthy relationships encourage young people to take a stand against myths in society that perpetuate relationship violence
help young people know who they can go to in their community to seek advice and support if they need it as either victims or perpetrators encourage young people to contribute to, or create a wider community response so as to encourage others to accept only healthy relationships. Below is a video for parents to introduce this to you. When we ran it last year the feedback from all students involved was really positive. We believe, in light of the issues currently being raised around the country on teenagers and relationships, that this is an important conversation to have with teenagers. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c-gt7QG7GEc&feature=youtu.be __________________________________________________________________________________
ROAD SAFETY YOUTH EXPO 2017 Rotorua Lakes Council is holding a Road Safety Youth Expo on Tuesday 11th April 2017, 9.30 to 12.00, at the Rotorua Energy Events Centre. All of the Year 11 Students will be attending this course and transport will be provided to and from the venue. We expect our students to be in correct uniform for this day and they will need to bring a snack, as the canteen will not be available at interval. __________________________________________________________________________________
JUNIOR NUMERACY TESTING / RESULTS All Year 9 students and any new Year 10 students have now been numeracy tested. This testing shows us what strategies students are able to use and it also tells us about the student's level of numeracy knowledge. These results inform teachers of the student's numeracy strengths and weaknesses and will assist differentiation of teaching/learning in the classroom. The main issue we see with students on entry to Rotorua Lakes High School is their weaker understanding/knowledge of proportions (fractions, decimals and percentages) and of higher level multiplication/division tables. If parents would like this information you are welcome to e mail, Mrs Karen Kelly on kellyk@rotorualakes.school.nz __________________________________________________________________________________

SPORTS Hot off the Press from our Coaches and Managers __________________________________________________________________________________ MOUNTAIN BIKING Race Report - Hamish Dodd Oceania Championships was probably one of the best races I've had, and I'm stoked with how I performed. Upon arriving in the event carpark for the first time a few days before, I was a bit worried about the wall of heat that met me when I opened the van door. Once I jumped on the bike and got a bit of wind chill I completely forgot about the heat, and focused on the fun tracks that Toowoomba had to offer. It had a lot that suited me, with some long switchbacked climbs interspersed with steep gravel road pinches, and some fun, rocky and flowy downhills between. After two days of practice I was getting hyped for the race. I was determined to not overcomplicate things like I did at nationals, instead just go as hard as possible for every metre of the race. Having a really fun course helped, as even if some things didn't go right I knew it'd still be a good time. After what seemed like no time at all it was race Photo Credit: Hixit day, forecast at 33 degrees in the shade. From the starting gun to the finish line this race just worked for me. After a good starting sprint that gained me a few spots, I went as hard as possible for the entire first lap, then tried to do the same on the second, and the third, and the fourth. Amongst the huge amounts of dust and rocks, the race slogged on, full of lung burning climbs and hair raising descents. My Garmin told me we had reached 38 degrees and 196bpm, and I was feeling every last degree and every last beat. Although this was a good race for me even good things must come to an end, and that's probably a good thing in itself as I was pretty near fainting at the finish. I ended up 12th in the Under 19 category for all Oceania, which I reckon is a pretty solid result for my first year in the age group, and a result I'm personally stoked with. A huge thanks to everyone who help to get these events up and going, from Mountainbiking Australia to the volunteers and marshalls, and all the kiwis cheering us on out in the heat. And thanks to everyone who gets me to them - The Coffee Club NZ , Mum Nicky Blakely, dad Jonathan Dodd, coach Oliver Shaw, mechanic Zac Bewley, and Arlene Rayner for helping out in the feed zone too.

TUESDAY SCHOOL RIDES There was a fabulous turn out for the first school ride on Tuesday and great to have Junior girls on the Team this year. The Team rides cater for all abilities are a mix of casual trail rides, skills coaching and competitions for those who want to race. We have a “No drop” rule so no one is ever left behind. The rides really are what you make them! I would like to extend special thanks to Daniel Cobb. Daniel has been riding with us since he was Year 10. Despite intense training for the upcoming Toa Enduro (EWS) he has taken on the commitment of Team Captain and helping to lead the Tuesday rides. RIDING JERSEYS Students are required to ride in a Rotorua Lakes High jersey. This ensures all students are easily identifiable and highly visible on the trail. There are slim fit XC style jerseys available to borrow from Miss B-G. We also have a ‘freeride’ style top and hoodies, which are available for purchase, please contact beaumontgills@rotorualakes.school.nz for details.
