Dear Parents/Caregivers

FROM THE PRINCIPAL ___________________________________________________________________________ DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI AWARD PRESENTATION On Tuesday 8 May I had the honour of attending Dr Shane Legg’s Distinguished Alumni Award presentation at Waikato University with our Head Girl, Kairangi Cox and Deputy Head Boy, Leroy Nurkka. Dr Shane Legg was a former student at RLHS and is now the co-founder of Google DeepMind. In 2010 Shane joined forces with neuroscientist Demis Hassabis and former video game designer Mustafa Suleyman to establish DeepMind Technologies. Their technology aimed to mimic human thought processes, has attracted some big-name investors. In 2014 DeepMind joined Google, said to be Google’s largest European buy. We all enjoyed the event immensely and it was certainly a great opportunity for the students, who were very much inspired by Shane’s achievements. ___________________________________________________________________________

___________________________________________________________________________ Further to our newsletter article of 13 April Quinn McCarthy reports: “The challenge involves getting suited up in 25kg’s of firefighting equipment and walking up 1003 stairs. I have been running up the Novotel stairs for the past 2 months now in training for the event and my goal is to make it to the top in under 15 minutes. I have currently raised around $750 for the cause and my fundraising target is $1000. It is an amazing cause to get behind and if you would like to donate please visit my page here thanks, Quinn”.

NEWS & EVENTS ___________________________________________________________________________ STUDENT FEE STATEMENTS Please note that the students’ fee statements will be handed out to all students early next week. Please check their bags for invoices. Just a reminder that student fees need to be paid for students to be eligible to attend the school ball. We would appreciate prompt payment. Thank you.

_________________________________________________________________________ GENERAL ACTIVITIY DONATION Each year the school seeks from parents a $70 donation per student, (this amount is included in the school fees account). This donation can be claimed as a charitable donation through Inland Revenue. At Rotorua Lakes High School we spend the donation on first aid supplies, school nurses, and student diaries, and to support cocurricular activities. It is unfortunate that we need to seek charitable support from parents / whanau for socalled ‘free education’ but government grants to schools do not cover a lot of extras.

Thank you very much to the parents and whanau who pay this voluntary donation. _________________________________________________________________________ YEAR 12 GEOGRAPHY FIELD TRIP  Wednesday 16th May Students need to be at school for 7:00am _________________________________________________________________________ 

DEPARTMENT NEWS

Tena Koutou Katoa My name is Toni Waaka and I work for Te Taumata O Ngāti Whakaue Iho Ake Trust. I will be coordinating the OneSight Vision Clinic being held from Monday 28th May to Friday 01st Jun 2018. You may recall that in 2016 One-Sight visited Rotorua and held a free week long eye clinic. During that time hundreds of Rotorua students were tested and those who needed glasses received them for free a few weeks laterSo that Students can get the most from the Clinic, here is some information 1. STUDENTS from Primary School (5 years) to High School (17 years) 2. We only have about 3 weeks to get as many Students booked so it would be awesome if you could please send the information back as soon as possible 3. ALL Students MUST HAVE the Parental Permission & Questionaire form that has been filled in correctly and more importantly SIGNED in the section that says: Parent / Guardian Consent 4. The information on the sheet is registered on the OneSight Clinic database by 2 of their administration team and it is important Clinic run smoother when the forms are sorted and the technicians can just pick up the form and take our tamariki for their assessment 5. Once we receive the forms (via scan, email, or at our office) we will book the time(s) for classes / school(s) and send confirmation – we will endeavour to accommodate all Students, classes and schools as best as we can and would appreciate your support if we need to be flexible as and when required 6. You will need to arrange transport to and from the venue. For schools with buses, vans and cars you will be able to utilise the car park through the main hospital entrance (off Arawa Street) while you are attending the Clinic 7. The initial assessment only takes a few minutes – if a further assessment is required this may take a bit longer 8. The glasses will be sent to our Te Taumata office and will be dispersed to the Schools by our Clinic Co-ordinator. Please be aware that it can take 4 – 6 weeks after the Clinic for the glasses to be sent from Australia For all booking and enquiries, please contact me on my details listed below: Hinematioro (Toni) Waaka Phone: +64 27 353 5460 Email: toni@taumata.org.nz We hope you can support this amazing kaupapa and help our rangatahi, tamariki, mokopuna to be able to get the help that they need. In doing so, we assist them to progress in their education and future pathway in life. Ngā mihi maioha Hinematioro (Toni) Waaka

SWIMMING SUCCESSES Skye Cox recently competed at the National Age Group Swimming Championships which is the elite level swimming competition in NZ for 13-18 years as part of the Swim Rotorua Team. Skye qualified to compete in 7 races and 2 relays. She raced personal best times in all but one event and was a finalist, placing 9 th in NZ in the 800m freestyle and was first reserve for the final in 200 backstroke. Skye qualified for the NZ Open Swimming Competition in 50 and 100m backstroke and is less than a second off 3 other events. This is an awesome achievement at 15 years old. At the Bay of Plenty Secondary Schools Swimming Competition held in April:  Rotorua Lakes High Girls team of Skye Cox, Ila Ford-Robertson, Kirsty Lyall and Rebecca Lyall placed 3rd in the 200m Medley relay  In the intermediate age category o Skye Cox 1st in 25m freestyle, 2nd 50m freestyle, 3rd in 100m freestyle and 50m backstroke o Kirsty Lyall placed 2nd in 25m freestyle and 10th in 50m free. o Rebecca Lyall placed 9th in 50m free and 10th in 100IM  In the AWD category Siobhan Terry placed 1st girl in 50m and 25 freestyle and 25 backstroke  In the 16 & over category Ila Ford-Robertson 1st in 25m free and 3rd in 50 breaststroke breaking 40 sec barrier Below – Skye Cox at NZ Age Group

GIRLS HOCKEY Girls Xl hockey team played against Tauhara College and won 4-1. Players of the day were: Tegan Fookes and Stella Pinckney. Girls 2nd Xl hockey team went to Taupo and play TNT and won 5-1. Players of the day were Sam Bateman and Melissa Bentley. A big thank you to Brent Crowe for providing transport for some of our players to Taupo. _________________________________________________________________________________________

BOYS HOCKEY The start of the new season has begun. Under the watchful eyes of new coach Owen Mitai the boys took to the turf for their first game against Whakarewa. With a mixture of new and old players, including some who have never played before, Owen began the job of building team work. The boys started out strong with lots of time playing in the oppositions half. A goal towards the end of the first half saw a short-lived celebration, with it

being disallowed. Second half the boys battled on but with fitness (or lack of) beginning to show we had some hairy moments with Whakarewa's attacks. The defense remained committed which allowed us to finish on a full time score of a draw 0-0. A promising start to the season! Player of the day Joel Roper. _________________________________________________________________________________________

BOYS SOCCER The Rotorua Lakes High School 1st XI Boys Soccer team took the field on Wednesday versus JPC 1st XI. The game began with a shaky start as JPC scored two lucky goals. Our back line readjusted and Josh Morley managed to break away from the JPC defenders to score our first goal. JPC came back with another goal to lead half time 3 to 1. In the 2nd half both teams came out fighting but Lakes came out fighting and Josh Morley decided one goal wasn't enough. Two more hit the back of the net. Unfortunately JPC did one better and scored another three in the 2nd half. A good start to the season with the team showing a lot of promise. Josh Morley gained man of the match for his hat trick.

NETBALL RLHS Junior Blue Team (Year 9) Coach: Kimiora Insley

Manager: Helen Atkinson

Team Members: Hinewai Bennett, Ngahuia Werahiko, Shya Smith, Hannah Tansey, Ajah Gray-Johansen, Kareraea Manihera-Kauwhata, Te Rina Newton and Ngatapa Te Moana. Netball season has well and truly begun with Secondary Schools Round One Competition underway. There are 4 Grades in the Collegiate section and Junior Blue is in Grade 3 along with 5 other teams. Last Saturday, the team played against Kahukura Jnr White and showed a lot of promise. Their footwork and ball passing skills have improved tremendously since the first training run and, as a team, they work well together. There are still many areas to work on and as the season continues I am sure the team will improve. Fitness, or lack of it, for some players was evident while on the court especially in the fourth quarter and it was obvious we had some tired team members out there. I look forward to this weekend’s game and a big thank you to whanau, parents and caregivers who come down to the courts to cheer the team on. Final Score: Lakes 14  

Kahukura 26

Next Game: Court 7 9:00am vs JPC Y10 Blue All girls are expected to be at the courts by 8:30 for warm up.
