FROM THE PRINCIPAL ___________________________________________________________________________ WORLD YOUTH CLIMBING CHAMPS Congratulations to Luke Gardner Year 10, who has qualified to represent New Zealand at the World Youth Climbing Championships to be held later this year in Russia. Luke had amazing success at the qualifiers and was one of only two climbers to qualify for climbing and bouldering. Luke will also compete in speed climbing in Russia but can't qualify for this as there is no speed wall in New Zealand as yet. Well done and all the best Luke! _______________________________________________________________________________
2018 YOUTH OLYMPIC GAMES Congratulations to Kayaker, George Snook Year 10, who has been named in the New Zealand Team for the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires. George has come through the Canoe Slalom NZ Development Squad and competed at the inaugural AIMS Games canoe slalom event in 2016 and won the Year 8 boys event. George is now a member of the New Zealand U18 Canoe Slalom team and is currently in Munich where he is training ahead of the ICF Junior World Championships in Italy in July. Well done George! We wish him all the best!
___________________________________________________________________________ PPTA – PAID UNION MEETING Next week on Wednesday 23 May classes will finish at 12.30 so teachers can attend a Post Primary Teachers’ Association Union Meeting (under the provisions of section 26 of the Employment Relations Act 2000). Supervision will be provided in the Auditorium for any bus, or other students who cannot get home at this time. Our apologies for any inconvenience.

NEWS & EVENTS STUDENT FEE STATEMENTS Please note that the students’ fee statements were handed out to all students this week. Please check their bags for invoices. Just a reminder that student fees need to be paid for students to be eligible to attend the school ball. We would appreciate prompt payment. GENERAL ACTIVITIY DONATION Each year the school seeks from parents a $70 donation per student, (this amount is included in the school fees account). This donation can be claimed as a charitable donation through Inland Revenue. At Rotorua Lakes High School we spend the donation on first aid supplies, school nurses, and student diaries, and to support cocurricular activities. It is unfortunate that we need to seek charitable support from parents / whanau for socalled ‘free education’ but government grants to schools do not cover a lot of extras.
Thank you very much to the parents and whanau who pay this voluntary donation. _________________________________________________________________________ 2018 SCHOOL TALENT QUEST RESULTS The talent at this school is truly outstanding and congratulations to all the students who entered. There were nine acts who reached the finals and they performed for the school last Friday 11 May, to determine who would be the 2018 winners. STUDENT FORUM NEWS The Student Forum are putting on a Pink Ribbon breakfast fundraiser at 7.30am on Thursday 24th of May in the school auditorium. Tickets are available for purchase by staff, Year 12 & Year 13 students from Student Reception and cost $35. Your ticket includes a DELICIOUS breakfast catered by the Blue Baths and a donation to the Breast Cancer Foundation. Limited to 100 tickets. Midland MRI National Youth Art Award
An invitation is extended to students aged 15 years and above to enter this award. Midland MRI sponsors a $2,000 main prize for one young person and there are six other awards also up for grabs which range between $250 and $1,000 in value. The award is a great way to encourage participation in our wider arts community and to gain recognition for the amazing work our young people produce. Tena Koutou Katoa My name is Toni Waaka and I work for Te Taumata O NgÄ ti Whakaue Iho Ake Trust. I will be coordinating the OneSight Vision Clinic being held from Monday 28th May to Friday 01st Jun 2018. You may recall that in 2016 One-Sight visited Rotorua and held a free week long eye clinic. During that time hundreds of Rotorua students were tested and those who needed glasses received them for free a few weeks later. So that Students can get the most from the Clinic, here is some information 1. STUDENTS from Primary School (5 years) to High School (17 years) 2. We only have about 3 weeks to get as many Students booked so it would be awesome if you could please send the information back as soon as possible 3. ALL Students MUST HAVE the Parental Permission & Questionnaire form that has been filled in correctly and more importantly SIGNED in the section that says: Parent / Guardian Consent 4. The information on the sheet is registered on the OneSight Clinic database by 2 of their administration team and it is important Clinic run smoother when the forms are sorted and the technicians can just pick up the form and take our tamariki for their assessment 5. Once we receive the forms (via scan, email, or at our office) we will book the time(s) for classes / school(s) and send confirmation – we will endeavour to accommodate all Students, classes and schools as best as we can and would appreciate your support if we need to be flexible as and when required
6. You will need to arrange transport to and from the venue. For schools with buses, vans and cars you will be able to utilise the car park through the main hospital entrance (off Arawa Street) while you are attending the Clinic 7. The initial assessment only takes a few minutes – if a further assessment is required this may take a bit longer 8. The glasses will be sent to our Te Taumata office and will be dispersed to the Schools by our Clinic Co-ordinator. GIRLS HOCKEY The Girls 1st Xl Hockey team won their game against TNT in Taupo on Tuesday night. Great work from all the team. Player of the day was Rebekah Edhouse. The Girls 2nd X1 Hockey team lost their game to WHHS on Tuesday night but all the team did an awesome job. Player of the day was Sacha Rogers Mott. _________________________________________________________________________________________
BOYS HOCKEY A trip over to Whakatane last night for our second game of the season against Whakatane High. The boys started strong with solid attacks into the circle of our opposition but just lacking the ability to finish in the goal!. Towards the end of the first half, after much play up and down the field, Jayden Fraser scored the first (official) goal of the season. While we hoped this would inspire more, unfortunately, the boys couldn't quite finish periods of hard play. Our defence held strong to give a win to us at the final whistle. BOYS SOCCER Well! We had one week of fine weather before the 1st XI and I were reminded that Soccer is a winter sport. The boys were soaked to the skin before the game versus WHHS Sky team even started. Sure enough this meant they were half asleep and WHHS put 2 goals in before we began to wake up. At half time the score was 3 - 0, and the sun was trying to shine. Some short sharp words from the coach breathed some life into our boys and they returned in the 2nd half with Brad Francis (captain) scoring our first goal. WHHS retaliated with another of their own and then Robbie Meredith came from the back to score! The crowd on the sideline were as shocked as he was! So with the score 4 - 2 we started to feel confident - but it was not meant to be. WHHS were
given a penalty and although a valiant effort from goalie Sean Folley, he couldn't stop it in the 2nd phase and it went in. In the last 3 minutes WHHS scored again. Final score 6 – 2. Man of the Match went to Cullen Dittmer for his huge improvement. _________________________________________________________________________________________
DUKE OF EDINBURGH NEWS Partnership to propel youth: The Duke of Edinburgh’s Hillary Award (the Award) and SCOUTS New Zealand are proud to announce an update to their partnership, which will give young people aged between 14 and 25 the opportunity to complete two prestigious youth awards simultaneously. Under the updated Memorandum of Understanding, activities completed as part of Scouting’s award scheme may be cross-credited towards the achievement of The Duke of Edinburgh’s Hillary Award at Bronze, Silver and Gold levels. If you are currently a Scout, etc., please check to see if you can cross credit your activities and services, which will help you accelerate your progress towards completion. See Mrs. Carlan-Riddell if you have any questions about this in C3. To Gold candidates looking for a residential project: The Cue Haven is a free and flexible opportunity to complete this, and allows participants to offer their skills in a range of ways, such as environmental and conservation work, art and leadership. Please follow the link to find out more about the venue and conditions. Cue Haven: A reminder that Cue Haven in Auckland offers an inexpensive option for your young people to complete their Residential Projects, and is open to participants from around New Zealand. Cue Haven offer Residential Project programmes four times a year. Check out what the Duke of Ed kids got up to on the last project run in April. Payment for the Award: The payment "gateway" is now live on the Duke of Edinburgh's website, so participants can now pay directly for any outstanding fees using that feature of the website. Once you are paid up, Mrs. Carlan-Riddell can approve your registration on the ORB, and you can log your activities and journeys.

REQUEST FROM Student Exchange Australia New Zealand Ltd Student Exchange Australia New Zealand Ltd are anxiously looking for host families for students of different Nationalities arriving in New Zealand on Thursday 19th July. They will have an orientation in Auckland before going to their host families on Saturday 21st. They are coming for five and ten months. Hosting is voluntary There is no payment for the meals or lodging of a student. They slot in as family members. The student and their natural parents pay for all their schooling and anything pertaining to school. We endeavor to enroll them in the school the host family would suggest. Their natural parents provide them with pocket money per month and if you go anywhere like the movies etc. they are expected to pay their own way. The student is covered with medical insurance.
