PINK SHIRT DAY Pink Shirt Day is Friday 26 May 2017.
Wear pink for only $2.00. There will be prizes for the best dressed and cupcakes on sale for $1.50. The coordinators this year are Alex Neff, and Cullen Dittmer, Year 12 students and we thank them for their dedication and hard work in organising this event. ________________________________________________________________________________ GENERAL ACTIVITY DONATION Each year the school seeks from parents a $70 donation per student, (this amount is included in the school fees account). This donation can be claimed as a charitable donation through Inland Revenue. At Rotorua Lakes High School we spend the donation on first aid supplies, school nurses, and student diaries, and to support co-curricular activities. It is unfortunate that we need to seek charitable support from parents / whanau for so-called ‘free education’ but government grants to schools do not cover a lot of extras.
Thank you very much to the parents and whanau who pay this voluntary donation. _________________________________________________________________________________
STAGE CHALLENGE 4 weeks to go until Stage Challenge and rehearsals are in full swing! The date for the competition is Tuesday 13th June. Students need to have paid in full by 30th May. Tickets for the show are not available through school, this is a decision of the competition, they will be sold via Ticketek. Apologies at this stage we have no information on cost. We have a rehearsal on Monday 6th June from 9am to 4pm. If your student cannot make this please email Katherine Beijeman, Year 10 Dean at beijemank@rotorualakes.school.nz Below is the rehearsal schedule for the next week. GIRLS HOCKEY Another grading game this week against RGHS. The RLHS team quickly got in to their stride and had their first shot at goal after only six minutes. A number of attacks followed in quick succession and Sharkayla Dean put the ball in the goal after 10 minutes. The attacks became relentless and, despite some great saves from the Girls High goalkeeper, after 15 minutes Ella Fookes got the second, finishing off a great team attack. This served as a wake up call to the opposition and RGHS now started to put more attacks together but the RLHS defence held firm, managing to go in to half-time leading 2 - 0. The second half started more evenly matched; both sides mounting breaking attacks but with the defences still managing to repel the shots. Again, the RGHS goalkeeper produced some splendid saves. After 35 minutes, just as Lakes were starting to tire, an innocuous looking long ball was deflected in to the Lakes High goal and the opposition were on the scoreboard. Buoyed by their luck the Girls High attacks became more relentless and they equalised after 40 minutes. The Lakes team rallied and came back with a vengeance, the pressure on the Girls High goal in the last 7 minutes was relentless and was rewarded when Sharkayla Dean slotted her second of the night with 2 minutes to spare until the final whistle. A very satisfactory 3-2 win. Player of the day: Teagan Fookes.

GIRLS SOCCER 1ST XI The Girls' Soccer season is underway. On Wednesday both teams were scheduled to play 'away' but the game against Reporoa was postponed by the hosts, so the social team did not have to brave the weather. However, the 1st Xl did venture out to Glenholme Reserve in the downpour to play JPC. Our team dominated the play in the first quarter but scored no goals. After halftime JPC came back with confidence and assertively scored seven goals. Our goalie, Maggie Donovan-Cotter saved many more, showing courage under fire, and our captain and coach, Ella Fookes, saved face for us all by scoring two goals. Our 1st Xl team showed great sportsmanship, encouraging each other, and demonstrating concern for players who fell on the field. The girls are reminded that there are MEETINGS on MONDAYS in A9 at interval; practices on TUESDAYS from 3.35 until 4.25, and games on WEDNESDAYS. Parents are welcome at practices and games, and we would like to sincerely thank Crispian Stewart who is coaching the 2nd Xl Social team, and Stu Lyall who has volunteered to help with transport.

BOYS SOCCER 1ST XI On the wettest, windiest day this week Rotorua Lakes High Boys Soccer 1st XI played against our toughest rivals. Western Heights 1st XI. We were five players down due to school trips and illness and so had brought in some diligent Year 9's to play. Our sodden players took the field and it was clear that in terms of average height and average age Heights would have the jump on us. However, in the first half we disproved that. Brilliant defence from Robbie Meredith and James Hodge alongside goalie Matt Gatenby meant that the score was 1 - 0 to them. Unfortunately, the second half did not demonstrate the same strength. The final score was 8 - 0. Captain Brad Francis showed exceptional leadership throughout. Player of the day went to Robbie Meredith. Huge thanks to John Meredith for his reffing and the supporters who braved the weather. _________________________________________________________________________________
BOYS HOCKEY 1ST XI A convincing start and win against Forest View High School last night, giving another confidence boost to the boys. A final score of 13-0 sums up the game, with Lakes defence under no pressure it has the halfs and forwards who controlled the game. Too many goals to remember all the scorers but well done to new comer Jamaalullah Adbul Rahman who scored two and to player of the day Hunter Thompson who scored a few!
