WHANAU SUPPORT GROUP and FRIENDS OF THE SCHOOL (FOTS) We want to renew our Whanau Support Group and Friends of the School (FOTS) Group. Deputy Principal Pani McLean and HOD Maori Taumata Soloman will lead the Whanau Support Group and Deputy Principal Ross Dunn will lead the Friends of the School Group. Other teaching staff as well as B.O.T members will attend meetings so these groups can become consultative forums where the school can highlight current initiatives and present possible future initiatives for feedback and feed forward from Parents / Whanau. At this point we are thinking we could meet about twice per term. The aim of these groups is not fund raising but to provide a forum where Whanau / Parents and the school can share ideas etc. about the educational needs of our Community and the students at RLHS. If you are interested in joining either of these groups, please contact  Pani McLean, mcleanp@rotorualakes.school.nz  or Ross Dunn, dunnr@rotorualakes.school.nz

NEWS & EVENTS PINK SHIRT DAY A very successful Pink Shirt day was held last Friday 18th of May. The Year 12 Health class used it as a fundraiser for the cause and to raise local awareness. It is a day that is celebrated annually around the globe. Pink Shirt Day began in Canada in 2007 when two students took a stand against homophobic bullying, mobilising their whole school, after a peer was bullied for wearing a pink shirt. In New Zealand, Pink Shirt Day aims to create schools, workplaces and communities where all people feel safe, valued and respected. Students and staff alike dressed up to show their support. The students organised an open air school concert, sausage sizzle and prizes were awarded for the best dressed students. The day was a huge success and a big thanks to all the people who supported it.
At the concert
Students left to right: Siobhan Terry, Cory Davidson, Lalanya Mansell and Maria Trass
_________________________________________________________________________ STUDENT FEE STATEMENTS Please note that the students’ fee statements were handed out to all students last week. Please check their bags for invoices. Just a reminder that student fees need to be paid for students to be eligible to attend the school ball. We would appreciate prompt payment. Thank you. _______________________________________________________________________________
GENERAL ACTIVITIY DONATION Each year the school seeks from parents a $70 donation per student, (this amount is included in the school fees account). This donation can be claimed as a charitable donation through Inland Revenue. At Rotorua Lakes High School we spend the donation on first aid supplies, school nurse, and to support co-curricular activities. It is unfortunate that we need to seek charitable support from parents / whanau for so-called ‘free education’ but government grants to schools do not cover a lot of extras.
Thank you very much to the parents and whanau who pay this voluntary donation. _________________________________________________________________________ FROM THE ATTENDANCE ADVISOR Recently there have been some issues with the cell phone. The number remains the same: 027 765 4957. Please use for texting messages only. Thank you.

Tena Koutou Katoa My name is Toni Waaka and I work for Te Taumata O Ngāti Whakaue Iho Ake Trust. I will be coordinating the OneSight Vision Clinic being held from Monday 28th May to Friday 01st Jun 2018. You may recall that in 2016 One-Sight visited Rotorua and held a free week long eye clinic. During that time hundreds of Rotorua students were tested and those who needed glasses received them for free a few weeks later. So that Students can get the most from the Clinic, here is some information 1. STUDENTS from Primary School (5 years) to High School (17 years) 2. We only have about 3 weeks to get as many Students booked so it would be awesome if you could please send the information back as soon as possible 3. ALL Students MUST HAVE the Parental Permission & Questionnaire form that has been filled in correctly and more importantly SIGNED in the section that says: Parent / Guardian Consent 4. The information on the sheet is registered on the OneSight Clinic database by 2 of their administration team and it is important Clinic run smoother when the forms are sorted and the technicians can just pick up the form and take our tamariki for their assessment 5. Once we receive the forms (via scan, email, or at our office) we will book the time(s) for classes / school(s) and send confirmation – we will endeavour to accommodate all Students, classes and schools as best as we can and would appreciate your support if we need to be flexible as and when required 6. You will need to arrange transport to and from the venue. For schools with buses, vans and cars you will be able to utilise the car park through the main hospital entrance (off Arawa Street) while you are attending the Clinic 7. The initial assessment only takes a few minutes – if a further assessment is required this may take a bit longer 8. The glasses will be sent to our Te Taumata office and will be dispersed to the Schools by our Clinic Co-ordinator. Please be aware that it can take 4 – 6 weeks after the Clinic for the glasses to be sent from Australia For all booking and enquiries, please contact me on my details listed below: Hinematioro (Toni) Waaka, Phone: +64 27 353 5460, Email: toni@taumata.org.nz We hope you can support this amazing kaupapa and help our rangatahi, tamariki, mokopuna to be able to get the help that they need. In doing so, we assist them to progress in their education and future pathway in life. Ngā mihi maioha, Hinematioro (Toni) Waaka

WINTER MENUS
SPORTS NETBALL The Senior A netball team has had a good start to the season. After grading they qualified in the A grade of the Secondary School competition. After 3 rounds, they have yet to win a game but they have had close losses to JPC and Ngongotaha, and are improving with every
game. The team would like to thank Total Hydraulic Solutions for their sponsorship this season and are enjoying the team bags and bottles that has come with this.
_________________________________________________________________________________________
GIRLS RUGBY The girls played two games on Monday 21st. The first game was against Rotorua Girls High School. The girls had a slow start and let in two easy tries. However they did improve their tackling game which meant they had the ball more often and were able to score two tries. They narrowly lost this game going down 15 - 12. In the second game they played Western Heights High School. This was a tight game and there was some outstanding defense. The game ended in a draw. Standout players were Zoe Pitman and Morgan
Mahaki. _________________________________________________________________________________________
BOYS HOCKEY A cold night for the game last night but we were lucky the rain stopped. The Boys came out strong against Taupo nui a Tia. Strong forward movement with good passing and excellent defensive tackles meant we played much of the first and second half on attack. We were rewarded with a goal in the first half by Amanullah Abdul Rahman. We continued to play hard but in the second half saw some nail biting action in our own circle. Unfortunately in the last stages of the game TNT came back with an equaliser. Final score 1-1 Player of the Day: Campbell Forrest. _________________________________________________________________________________________
