__________________________________________________________________________ HABITAT FOR HERO AWARD Congratulations to Didi Lawson and Jack Eggleston who were awarded the Habitat for Hero award for their amazing work on waterways around Okareka. They worked independently on this project with their parent’s supervision. The result was an awesome video presentation and the $250 award. We hope to be updated soon with their progress.

Congratulations again boys and very well done!

__________________________________________________________________________ DRAMA KIDS ROTORUA I am delighted to congratulate all our students for their fantastic results and in particular Eve Battersby who has just won the Senior Civic Arts Scholarship for Speech New Zealand. Eve sat her Advanced Associate Diploma in the Teaching of Speech and Drama through Drama Kids Rotorua this year. She sat three practical and four theory examinations for this. She achieved all three practical modules and two of her theory modules with Distinction, which is the highest available mark. Well done!

Drama Kids and Lakes High student Liam Dixon has been selected for the SGCNZ Young Shakespeare Company who will travel to London in 2018 to study and perform. He also achieved his Grade 8 Trinity London Speech and Drama exam with Distinction.

Ex-student Hannah Dixon has just completed her Advanced Associate Diploma in the Teaching of Speech and Drama.

Emma Jenkin has passed her Grade 8 Speech and Drama with marks of Honours plus, Merit plus and Honours plus for her three modules.

NEWS & EVENTS __________________________________________________________________________ YEAR 10 HALLOWEEN BAKING CHALLENGE It was a tough and exciting challenge for our students in Food Technology Year 10. We held a Halloween baking creation class on Tuesday 31 October. Our students rose to the challenge admirably creating some amazing designs which, without doubt, were very much enjoyed by all!

Well done, fantastic creations!

__________________________________________________________________________ TOP TOWN  A TOP TOWN has been organized by our Heads of House for Junior students. It will be held on Friday 1 December 2017 from 9 am until 2.15 pm.  TOP TOWN is purely a fun day about participation and enjoyment.  All students must wear their PE uniform to school that day to join in the fun activities.

__________________________________________________________________________ YEAR 13 LEAVERS DINNER The Year 13 Leavers dinner will be held on Thursday 7 December at Rydges Hotel at 7 pm seated for dinner at 7.30 pm.

Tickets are now on sale at the school office until Friday 24 November 2017 all tickets must be paid in full by this date- $55.00 per head. Tickets must be presented at the door.

Students who have booked their tickets please come and collect from student reception.

All students must be accompanied by a Parent/Caregiver.

Permission slips are available at student reception.

___________________________________________________________________________ EXTERNAL EXAMS We remind all senior students to keep up with their NCEA external revision.

Students have been handed their entry slips for external exam. SLIPS MUST BE BROUGHT TO EACH AND EVERY EXAM.

Reminders for exams Students need to arrive early, be in full school uniform, including being clean shaven.

Students attending school for tutorials must be in uniform and sign in / out through the Duty Dean.

If there are any issues, parents / caregivers / students should contact Ms J Sturme as soon as they arise.

ALL THE VERY BEST TO OUR SENIOR STUDENTS FOR THEIR EXAMS _________________________________________________________________________ SENIOR UNIFORM FOR 2018 YEAR 12 STUDENTS A reminder to parents of this year’s Year 11 students that they will need to buy the new Senior Uniform for their students going into Year 12 next year and then on to Year 13 the following year:  GIRLS need a plain blue skirt and a white shirt.  BOYS need a white shirt.

All items can be purchased from The Rugby Shop. There may be some second-hand items available through the school.

DUKE OF EDINBURGH AWARDS To all active candidates and Parents: Can you please finish getting your activities and skills signed off and bring your books in so I can order your awards this coming week, as I would like to get as many of you as possible qualified this year. It is up to you to organise your progress on the award, no one is going to do it for you!

If you require a journey or other training opportunities there are many being run by Gerry Purcell in the lead up to Christmas, and later in the summer. Please note there are cut off days for indicating your intention to attend, as there is much planning involved for Gerry. Don't leave it and be disappointed by being refused because you missed the deadline.

Ruapehu Opportunity for Bronze level Training, Silver level Training, Bronze Journeys, Silver Journeys, Gold practice (if at least four). (Further details be sent out separately) 6 - 12 Jan - Gold level Residential opportunity at Kauaeranga Valley Christian Camp as a youth Leader for a school holiday camp for 8 to 12 years old. Adventurous Journeys - I can be available to shadow/supervise/assess Journeys 4-6 Dec, 14-22 Dec, 15-25 Jan. Minimum Team is four, max is seven - same level participants. Before doing a Qualifying Journey participants must have done at least one Practice Journey with the same team, and in the same terrain. ______________________________________________________________________________________

REMINDER YEAR 13 SCHOOL LEAVERS All Tertiary Programme applications are now open - if you are intending on applying to a University or Polytechnic in 2018 you should have your online application under way.

Please see Mrs Oldman in the Careers Department if you need any help with your applications.

University Halls of Residence first round applications have now closed but students can apply right up until their course starts but may have to go on a waitlist. However, reminder to students that Teachers will be on holiday from the 9 December 2017 and if you are still thinking of applying for Halls of Residence you need to get the online application completed before this date so that the CCRF (Common Confidential Referees Form) part of the application can be submitted to school for your preferred teacher to complete the reference before the 9th December 2017.

Applications for many Scholarships have either closed or closing soon so please check the closing dates and details required from the University or Polytechnic website. ______________________________________________________________________________

RED STAG TIMBER – WAIPA MILL - ROTORUA THINKING ABOUT LEAVING SCHOOL?

WE HAVE TRAINEE ROLES NOW AVAILABLE! Located 5 minutes south of Rotorua CBD, Red Stag Timber is an industry leader when it comes to producing quality timber products. The Company operates New Zealand’s largest sawmill, and is a well-established and successful business. We have invested heavily over the past 10yrs, with a new modern Sawmill recently commissioned, and further expansion of our Secondary Processing operations underway. We are seeking keen school leavers who are eager to learn more about the timber industry and progress through a timber industry qualification. Our training policy includes a 2 year bond from the completion of the qualification, so a long-term commitment is sought to match these opportunities.

2018 Red Stag Cadets - The Red Stag Cadet programme involves 12 months of rotational duties to learn broader aspects of timber processing. This is followed by an agreed training pathway to achieve a L4 Timber Industry qualification. Work duties during the rotation will include timber handling, recording, wrapping, strapping and the safe operation of machinery at various work stations.

Commencing in January 2018, hours of work are Monday to Thursday 5.00am – 3.40pm with occasional overtime on a Friday if required.

Timber Machinist & Remanufacturing Apprentices. The Timber Machinist and Remanufacturing apprenticeship pathways lead to a Level 4 industry trade qualification over 3 years in either Timber Machining or Finger Jointing. This option would suit those who are mechanically minded, with a particular interest in wood manufacturing. Our apprentices will also work on various shifts including Afternoon Shift and Weekend Shift. Flexibility with work days/hours will therefore be required. We are looking to start our new Trainees as soon as possible, with interviews held in November.

Summer R&D Assistant (Fixed Term) We also have a fixed term dayshift role available over summer working with our Research & Development team. Duties will involve handling and testing timber, basic reporting and keeping data records. This role will be starting early December and run through to end January, working Monday to Friday 8hrs/day. Our preferred candidates for the above opportunities will have achieved a minimum L2 NCEA pass including Maths and English and a related Technical subject. They will also have a reliable attendance record, excellent communication skills and be physically fit to meet the demands of the role. Confident computer skills would be an advantage. Full pre-employment medical examination and drug screening applies.

Lake City Athletic Club – Track and field (athletics) Lake City Athletic Club’s weekly Wednesday athletics sessions are commencing at 6.00pm on the 1st November at the athletics track, No 2 Ground, International Stadium, Devon Street West, Rotorua.

The Club has looked at making its weekly activities more inviting and has come up with one Wednesday evening having a set programme of athletic events and every second Wednesday

skills and training evenings ending with relays. These programs cater for running, jumping and throwing events for those 12 years and older.

Unless those attending wish to join the Lake City Athletic Club the only charge will be a $2.00 "Pay and Play" fee payable each evening a person is in attendance.
