2017 TE ARAWA AWARDS The 2017 Te Arawa Awards finalists were announced this week and I am delighted to advise that our Year 11 Student, Kyra Mita, will be a finalist this year in the Junior Sportswomen division.

Kyra and Latisha Winiata who are members of the Te Aurere J16 Girls Waka Ama team Okareka are also finalists in the Junior Teams Division. The awards showcase Te Arawa talent and acknowledge excellence in sport, cultural activities, service to the community, academia, and Te Arawa making positive contributions to whanau, hapu, iwi, and marae.

HILLARY OUTDOORS EDUCATION CENTRE The Hillary Outdoors Education Centre are holding a week long outdoor training session for 20 Year 10 students from Lakes High. 10 boys and 10 girls only will get this wonderful opportunity. Students will need to get the information from Miss Beijeman ASAP to ensure their place as it is done on a first in first serve basis. The purpose is to develop peoples’ potential through challenging outdoor activities, environmental leadership, fun and support.

FROM THE MATHS DEPARTMENT All students in the four 11 MSC classes will be sitting their first external exam, commonly called the MCAT, on Tuesday 19 September. It is a one hour exam and will be held in the Auditorium during Period 1.

All the students in the 11 MSC classes will need to be at school by 8.40am on the exam day with blue or black pens in a clear plastic bag.

If a student cannot attend the assessment at this time for any reason, please contact Shaun English (HOD Maths) as soon as possible and particularly before 8.30am on the day of the assessment. A medical certificate will be needed for absences due to illness.

No calculators are allowed for this assessment.

PLEASE NOTE: Students in Mrs Richardson's and Mr Kairaoi's 11MAT classes will NOT be sitting this assessment at this time. _____________________________________________________________________________________

REVOLUTION TOUR On Friday 25 August all Year 9 and 10 students attended the presentation by Revolution Tour. Dedicated to serving Secondary Schools, Revolution Tour targets issues associated with young people who are both victims of and/or perpetrators in bully behaviour. The programme assists in the development of self-management, and participation/contribution in a student’s respective environment. Revolution Tour believe that by evoking positive change, through contemporary methods, we can achieve much within the social culture of a schools social setting. We were delighted with the presentation and hope that this will have a positive impact on our students.

DEPARTMENT NEWS _________________________________________________________________________________ SENIOR VISUAL ARTS EXTERNAL ASSESSMENT PORTFOLIO DUE DATES All Senior Visual Arts students are working diligently towards completion of their portfolios for their external assessments in Sculpture, Design, Photography and Painting. The following final summative due dates for Levels 1, 2, and 3 are as follows. Please note that the four Arts teachers, Mr. Flitton, Mrs. Carlan-Riddell, Ms. Howard, and Mrs. Malcolm will have their own formative due dates in term three, and they will be communicating with parents and caregivers directly about them. This is because the different disciplines have particular processes in photographing, printing or finishing the works. All work must be reviewed thoroughly with their teachers, before fixing it securely to the boards for assessment.

If the students miss the summative due date there is no late entry or resubmission opportunity, unless they submit in the following academic year. Please make sure your son or duaghter is clear on the requirements about their assessments. The folios are worth 12 credits at Level 1-2, and 14 at Level 3. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact your son or daughters' teachers (----@rotorualakes.school.nz).

Level 1 Mixed Media Photography and Painting/Design (Mrs. Malcolm and Mrs. Carlan-Riddell): Folio boards must be presented to the auditorium no later than 9 am on 17th October.

Level 2 Sculpture, Photography, Design and Painting: (All teachers) Folio boards must be presented to the auditorium no later than 9 am on October 24th.

Level 3 Sculpture, Photography, Design and Painting: All folios are couriered to NZQA for assessment on Thursday November 2. A courier pick up will be available from school at 10 am with pre-payment to the school office (price to be confirmed). Students must submit their work to their teachers for review on or before Wednesday 1 November during classtime for authenticity and photography purposes. _______________________________________________________________________________

NZ SECONDARY SCHOOLS ART COMPETITION The New Zealand Secondary Schools Art Competition will be taking place this year! This is a wonderful opportunity for students to get involved. The event is run by a group of high school students with support from the Ministry of Youth Development. The competition was originally drafted, created and built around the idea of encouraging and inspiring young artists in New Zealand to develop their original ideas into works of art, thereby increasing their confidence and exposure to our thriving multifaceted art community.

Here is some key information about the event:         

The theme for this year is “Discomfort” Tuesday 19th October at 11:59 pm - Artwork Submission Deadline Wednesday 8th November at 11:59 pm - Peoples' Choice Closes Thursday 9th November - Winners Announced Prize money for 1st, 2nd, 3rd and Peoples' Choice will be awarded in all four categories.

SPORTS AT RLHS From our Coaches & Managers ____________________________________________________________________________________________

GIRLS SOCCER Girls' soccer finished last week with a loss for each team BUT there have been many wins of other kinds over the season. Jana Furstenburg kicked her first goal for the 2nd XI's game against Reporoa on Tuesday, following Kirsty Lyall's goal two weeks before. The Second's coach, Crispian Stewart says he is just happy when his team kicks a goal, but he is also delighted with the improvement of individual skills over the season. Many of these girls had not played soccer before and have surprised themselves by really enjoying this sport. Lana Moree, the Second's captain, is one of these newcomers who has shown great leadership skills as well as improvement on the field. Our referee for nearly every game has been Ethan Wait and we would like to thank him for his reliability and equilibrium! Our First XI has had a difficult season without a proper coach but the mainly year 13 players have organised their own training when no one else has been available and their captain, Ella Fookes, has done a wonderful job of organising her players before and during games. It will be sad to see these senior girls leave at the end of the year but the enthusiasm is there in the year 12 and younger players so soccer at Lakes High looks healthy for 2018.

HOWEVER, the school will be looking for coaches and managers!

Dave Parry took time out of retirement to organise the entire Rotorua-Taupo-Reporoa secondary school competition for girls' soccer and will need a successor if the competition is to continue. He also came in to coach and referee when he could.

Next year he will be unavailable, as will Crispian Stewart, the parent who did a fine job of coaching the Seconds this year. And Annie Scott, the manager, will retire at the end of 2017.

To all the parents who provided transport (Stu Lyall and Michelle Sargison) and encouragement from the sidelines (especially Maggie's Dad), and chocolate (Stu Lyall) and oranges (Maree Van Leeuwin).

LADIES 1ST XI HOCKEY Play off final against Tauhara College, Taupo this week. Played at the Rotorua turfs, Lakes benefitted from a large, vocal crowd of supporters. Tauhara quickly set out to attack the Lakes goal and this seemed to unsettle RLHS. However, it was Lakes that opened the scoring after 6 minutes when we pounced on a Tauhara error at a PC which ended up with Riley Lambert finishing a fine effort. This buoyed up the girls and Lakes started to build more attacks but, as in recent weeks, there were many near misses. Half time: RLHS 1 Tauhara 0. As so often has been the case over the season, Mr Smithells' stirring words at half time produced a tangible effect straight after the break and after 31 minutes Ella Fookes produced a fine effort that was helped on its way in to the Tauhara goal by Abi Donald. More Lakes attacks followed with the pressure on the Tauhara defence increasing however, they showed how dangerous they could be with a number of break out attacks. It was from such a break out that they scored in the 51st minute and immediately changed up a gear in pursuit of an equaliser to force the match in to penalties. RLHS stepped up with more attacks and some heroic defending over the final 9 minutes to win the match 2 - 1 and be crowned B Grade Champions for 2017; thoroughly well deserved. After such a great performance there were four Players of the Day: Riley Lambert, Stella Pinkney, Ruby Ryan and Rebecca Lyall. Finally it has been a great privilege to be the team’s self appointed photographer and scribe - all the best for next season.

BOYS HOCKEY The season came to an end last night and with it an end to coaching by ex-pupil Isaac King. Isaac has coached this team for the last 4 years. Under his superb guidance and skill, the team has gone from strength to strength, from initially fighting to stay out of C Grade, to winning B Grade and then this year promotion to A grade. Isaac will be a huge loss to the team and we thank him for the time and care he has put into his position. Last night we played against Tauhara College. It was the standout game of our year with the boys implementing all the tactics and skills Isaac has been coaching them. With strong patience and perseverance, they broke through the strong defense of Tauhara with a goal in the first half. A second goal in the first few minutes of the second half was well deserved by a committed Lakes team. Unfortunately, this spurred Tauhara to action and slowly they pushed their way onto the score card. 10 mins to go we were still winning but a momentary lapse allowed Tauhara to equalise. Further strong drives by Lakes didn't pay off and then much to the sideline despair in the final minute Tauhara scored the winning goal.

The boys have had a great season developing their play and should be proud of themselves. We wish the departing seniors all the best next year and thank them for their contribution to Lakes Hockey. _________________________________________________________________________________________
