Rumours had reached us that the goody bags had run out already at the Chanel press day, but so committed are we to the world-of-Karl that we braved the reputed lack of cosmetic gifts and bottled water and actually went to see the clothes. A near-perfect, light wool LBD with pretty pintucks and ruching down the back of the cap sleeves notwithstanding, the real highlight was the preposterously gorgeous sportswear. Anyone for a Chanel polo helmet? Or whatabout some skis fashioned in the house’s famous quilted design with a darling little romper suit to pose around on the slopes (Victoria)? Don’t worry about the optional salopettes to protect your knees from the snow, either: if you look this great in nylon hotpants, nobody will expect you to actually ski! Snowboarding has been around since the 1920s, when boys and men would tie plywood or wooden planks from barrels to their feet using clotheslines and horse reins in order to steer themselves down hills. Modern snowboarding began in 1965 when Sherman Poppen, an engineer in Muskegon, Michigan, invented a toy for his daughter by fastening two skis together and attaching a rope to one end so she would have some control as she stood on the board and glided downhill. Dubbed the “snurfer” (combining snow and surfer), the toy proved so popular among his daughter’s friends that Poppen licensed the idea to a manufacturer that sold about a million snurfers over the next decade. And, in 1966 alone over half a million snurfers were sold. In 1979, the first ever World Snurfing Championship was held at Pando Winter Sports Park near Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Also during this same period, in 1977, Jake Burton Carpenter, a Vermont native who had enjoyed snurfing since the age of 14, impressed the crowd at a Michigan snurfing competition with bindings he had designed to secure his feet to the board. That same year, he founded Burton Snowboards in Londonderry, Vermont. The “snowboards” were made of wooden planks that were flexible and had water ski foot traps. Very few people picked up snowboarding because the price of the board was considered too high at $38, but eventually Burton would become the biggest snowboarding company in the business. In the spring of 1976 Welsh skateboarders Jon Roberts and Pete Matthews developed a Plywood deck with foot bindings for use on the Dry Ski Slope at the school camp, Ogmore-by-Sea, Wales. UK. Further development of the board was limited as Matthews suffered serious injury while boarding at Ogmore and access for the boarders was declined following the incident. The ‘deck’ was much shorter than current snow boards. Bevelled edges and a convex, polyurethane varnished bottom to the board, allowed quick downhill movement, but limited turning ability. In 1979, the first ever World Snurfing Championship was held at Pando Winter Sports Park near Grand Rapids, Michigan.

part of the fashion. Long, knee-length coats with loose sleeves, caught on really well in the 1950s. Among the different fabrics, silk was widely used and furs also occupied an important place in the wardrobes of most women. Furs were considered to be a status symbol and purchasing garments of fur was definitely an expensive affair. Since real fur was not affordable for all, imitation fur became popular. Leopard prints were also a rage and made an important part of fashion in the fifties.

The style adopted by women in the 1950s is best defined as feminine, sensuous, yet elegant. The hourglass figure was majorly highlighted by the outfits worn. As compared to the silhouettes of short skirts and wide shoulders worn in the forties, fashion in the fifties evolved to fuller skirts and soft shoulder lines that enhanced a woman’s figure. Poodle skirts and circle skirts were a favorite amongst the young girls. Pleated and pencil skirts were used by older women for a more formal and mature look.

Shorts and pants formed part of the casual-wear. Elegance was an important factor in the fashion of the fifties, with Hollywood also influencing the clothing. Actors such as Marilyn Monroe and Grace Kelly became the style icons for this period. Flowers, stripes, and polka dots all became a part of fifties fashion. A variety of necklines like the halter and clothes with round collars and shawl collars were adopted by the people. Patterns of sleeves also changed with puff sleeves, kimono, and rolled sleeves coming into the picture.

As a result of the growing popularity of swing dancing, strapless dresses with full skirts ranked high on the trendy meter. Another style of dress favored by women in the ‘50s was the chemise dress, as it could be worn on most body types. The dress was loose and had a straight cut, allowing the wearer to experiment with belts.

A woman never left her house without her gloves in this era. The scarf became an extremely important accessory and was used very creatively. The rich loved to complement their evening dresses with a mink stole. Stilettos gained their true popularity in this period, as wearing high heels became a major fashion trend. Women opted for flats and block heels for regular wear.

Women switched to trendy coats instead of the traditional shawls. One also saw the large use of feathers as a

annah Teter is snowboarding’s golden girl in more than one sense of the word. Most famous, perhaps, for her gold medal at the Winter Olympics half pipe contest in 2006, she is unarguably one of the top contest riders in women’s professional snowboarding. The youngest snowboarder to ever make the US snowboard team at 15 years old, and already a veteran of the X Games at just 23, Hannah is a success story of podiums and prize money. But Hannah’s gilded persona has a whole other life and one that is gaining pace by the day. For she is one of the most socially active professional snowboarders around, working closely with several charities, running a donation-driven family maple syrup company called Hannah’s Gold and, impressively, donating 100 per cent of her contest winnings to charity. The straight-talking, effusive personality, which first got Hannah noticed as a teenage girl blasting onto the snowboard scene, is now being channelled into a strong political and socially conscious woman who has a lot to say and will be heard!

to try damn hard to make this world a better place. But when she does, just don’t forget the girl can throw down one of the meanest 900s in the half pipe you’re ever likely to see. How will the Olympics be different for you this time around, both in terms of riding and emotionally? I am approaching this year’s Olympics with a way different mind set than the last. I feel more knowledgeable this time around.

Do you feel a lot of pressure surrounding the Olympics, with everyone looking to see if the Gold medallist is still on top? I take it as an opportunity to be a major influence for people, and to be more open about different topics that they

money towards my Kenya clean water project. 100 per cent of my contest profits are donated. This year I won about $65,000! Girls like you are instrumental in closing the gender gap in snowboarding, and yet there is still a lot of inequality throughout the sport. Do you feel this is justified in any way, or just an outdated notion? Luckily in snowboarding competitions, the pay is exactly the same. Above that I think there are a lot more important things to make sure are justified, such as the Muslim laws that will stone a young girl to death if she’s caught “hooking up” with a boy that isn’t approved. Or the Catholic views that say you’re “going to hell if you use protection in intercourse”. Or the law just passed in Australia that now regulates herbal supplements to be purchased only through a pharmacy because they are “dangerous”. Or maybe the factory farms where billions of animals are slaughtered inhumanely for their meat, causing disease and illness among consumers. There are many outdated notions to consider.

FASHION IS NOT SOMETHING THAT EXISTS IN DRESSES DAILY. FASHION IS IN THE SKY, IN THE STREET, FASHION HAS TO DO WITH IDEAS, THE WAY WE LIVE, WHAT IS HAPPENING.
