Learning Agreement

For this unit I will explore the idea of space. I will look into all possible areas of this topic such as blank space, waste of space, spacial awareness, positive & negative space etc. I will research into what has already been done around the notion of space and with this information I will explore all other possible areas. I will look into Guerilla Advertising as they create campaigns that are clever and initiative by thinking outside the box; this will be useful for inspiration to my project as I to want to deliver a design with a message. I will also research into social design as my topic falls under this category.

02

I am doing this project because I feel that the world we live in today has a lot of wasted space surrounding us that could be turned into something useful, clever or just visually appealing.

03

The areas I will try and use and explore will be areas that people have forgotten about, abandoned or simply would not think creatively enough to use.

04

As I am doing a Graphic Design course, Graphic designers often state their opinions/ messages to the public in order to draw attention to their work and the idea they are trying to get across. The work I want to create will have meaning about the environment surrounding us. This touches on the idea of sustainability, social design and heritage of Nottinghamshire. I am interested in these areas as I feel design is moving on towards benefitting the world. My target audience will appeal to a broad range of people mainly adults. This is because my aim is to make people more aware of their surroundings and how they can use them more effectively and creatively.

05

My research will inspire me to experiment with a broad range of ideas, ending up with a contemporary and meaningful approach this will be effective in order to get people thinking about being more creative with the wasted space surrounding Nottinghamshire’s environment.

06

Aims A1 To develop research methodologies and enhance your knowledge and abilities in the development of a body of creative and technically competent work appropriate for entry level 6 A2 To develop critical thinking skills and self-reflection in order to develop ideas relating to self-initiated projects A3 To encourage effective communication of ideas to a professional outcome A4 To encourage and to apply time management skills in the realisation of this unit

07

Learning Outcomes On completion of the unit I will be able to: LO1 Demonstrate appropriate research methodologies and explored a range of ideas relating to the chosen topic LO2 To evidence the ability to analyse and synthesis research findings in order to inform the creative ideas LO3 Produce professional outcome that communicates the idea in relation to contemporary design practice using appropriate media, environments and design skills LO4 Demonstrate the ability to manage your time and work efficiently

Urban Renewal

Gathering background research, identifying famous historical associations of Nottinghamshire and its culture. Developing my knowledge by gathering background research on the history and heritage of Nottinghamshire. This will allow me to identify the culture and its society. By familiarising myself with the city it will aid my observation in order to revitalize it.

10

As part of the urban development program Nottinghamshire city is undergoing substantial change for social encouragement and innovation.

11

To create change within a city it needs feel good design where people stop to take a look and interact with the visuals presented. The designs need to be intelligent, appealing and eyecatching.

12

To change the current visual representations you must research into the history of the city such as previous designs, its heritage and the culture within its society.

13

HISTORY OF NOTTINGHAM Nottingham has a long history shrouded in drama, mystery and myth. From the world famous outlaw Robin Hood to three literary giants Lord Byron, DH Lawrence and Alan Silitoe the citys heritage is literally made of legends. It is difficult to date back to when Nottingham was first founded but Neotholithic, Bronze Age and Iron Age artifacts have been found in the city. Nottingham is renown for being the city of caves, with the Anglo Saxon age dating back to using these tunnels and caves, and since then it has been proven that they have been used for other generations. Nottingham was originally called Snotengaham during the Anglo Saxon times, however in 1086 the Normans took control dropping the ‘s’ from the name. Nottingham is most famous for its castle and industries such as the lace market, John Playa, Raleigh and many more. Boots the chemist was also founded here with the discovery of ibuprofen. Now Nottingham is also known for its scenic areas and protected buildings such as Wollaton Hall and Clumber Park. Goose Fair is also a wellrecognised attraction taking part on in October. With plenty to do in and see the city could be describes as “A dynamic mix of medieval and modern”.

14

NOTTINGHAM CITY COUNCIL BUDGETS 2015/1026 What it does: - Collects rubbish - Fills in pot holes - Cuts the grass - Sweeps up rubbish - Supports local business - Creates job e.g. the new tram lines, housing etc. - Offers life changing support for the elderly, disabled and children in care Nottingham city council has faced major cuts of around £73 million, which will decrease by a further £30 million in April 2015. Nottingham has been one of the worst hit areas for budgets for example each house will have £133 less in revenue spending power per house this year. Reducing costs: - Reduced council offices - Sharing services with other authorities - Reduced management costs and use of consultants - Creating jobs such as fitting the tram lines and housing development

15

NOTTINGHAM COUNTY COUNCIL BUDGETS 2015/2016 Nottingham county council has to reduce its costs by £77 million by 2017/18. The proposals approved by the county council will reduce overall running costs by more than £30 million over the next three years. In total the county council will spend more than £1.1 billion during 2015/16 providing services to people in Nottinghamshire, raising £292 million from local council taxpayers.

Reducing costs: - Introducing smaller household waste bins, to increase recycling and reduce waste disposal. Action still needs to be taken to reduce the £20m budget for waste disposal in Nottingham - Keep three care homes open for the next three years, reducing pressure on NHS hospital places - Increasing council tax by 1.99% raising £16.5million over the next 3 years

As part of the budget: - Extra care developments for the elderly and disabled - Improving family support - Increasing foster carers - A new jointly owned local authority company to deliver the county’s highway services

16

WHAT DOES THE BUDGET CUTS FOR NOTTINGHAM MEAN FOR TOURISM AND PROMOTION?

17

As the Nottinghamshire councils have experienced budget cuts, the grant given to Nottingham’s current promotion sector ‘Experience Nottingham’ will be cut by £100,000. This will have significant impact on the promotion of tourism around the city. However by working with the private sector they should be able to get around dramatic change for the city. I feel that although budgets are tight my project feeds a niche within Nottingham City Centre as not only is it bringing the city back to life by using uplifting colour and modern design but it will also reminding people of the events that go off around the city. It is also recreating areas in Nottingham that are misused bringing dull and uncared about areas into the public eye.

18

STATEMENTS MADE ABOUT NOTTINGHAM “The streets and squares that make up the public realm of Nottingham are a vital part of the character of the city. In the city centre this public realm remains largely intact and the priority is to extend the areas that have been improved. Outside the centre the street network is more fragmented and broken. In these areas there is a need to stitch it back together” (Nottingham City Council, 2009)

“The centre has been cleaned up but not, as in some cities, depersonalised. Even in Childhood I was aware of the brash self-confidence in Nottingham, though perhaps the less conscious you are of it the more certain you may be to acquire it” (Alan Silitoe, 1987)

The most beautiful city in the world is nothing if its streets don’t throng with life and its buildings glow with activity. The activity in a city is therefore at least as important as its design. This relates to the mix of different uses that bring people into the city centre at different times of the day. (Nottingham City Council, 2009)

19

Forever associated with men in tights and a sheriff with angermanagement issues – aka the Robin Hood legend – Nottingham is a dynamic county capital with big-city aspirations, atmospheric historical sights, and a buzzing music and club scene thanks to its spirited student population. (Lonely Planet, 2015)

Today, Nottingham is a premiere shopping destination and one of the top ten most visited cities in England by overseas tourists. (Wiki Travel, 2015)

The most beautiful city in the world is nothing if its streets don’t throng with life and its buildings glow with activity. The activity in a city is therefore at least as important as its design. This relates to the mix of different uses that bring people into the city centre at different times of the day. (Nottingham City Council, 2009)

COLOUR THEORY For my project I have taken into consideration the power of colour theory. As my design is based on bright uplifting colours to change the appearance of the city to make it refreshing. Colour theory has multiple of definitions but the three most basic and logical approaches are: The colour Wheel, Colour harmony and the context of how colours are used. Colour theories create a logical structure for colour. The colour wheel is based on Red, Yellow and Blue, which is the most traditional approach, which Sir Isaac Newton developed in 1666. Since then many scientists and artists have developed this theory in many concepts and variations. For my project the colour wheel has some relevance to me as for my designs I have used all three primary colours, and some secondary and tertiary within variation. This is in order to create a design that is visually appealing and eye-catching.

21

22

COLOUR HARMONY Colour Harmony can be defined as pleasing arrangements of parts whether it is colour, music, poetry etc. Colour harmony is something, which is pleasing to the eye; it engages the viewer and creates an inner sense of order and balance in the visual experience. When something is not harmonious, its either boring or chaotic. At one extreme is a visual experience that is so bland that the viewer is not engaged. The human brain will reject under stimulating information. At the other the extreme is a visual experience that is so overdone, so chaotic that the viewer can’t stand to look at it. The human brain rejects what it cannot organize, what it cannot understand. The visual task requires that we present a logical structure. Color harmony delivers visual interest and a sense of order. Colour harmony has a huge impact on my work, as I do not want to under or over stimulate my audience within the city of Nottingham. In order to do this I will create visuals that are pleasing to the eye by applying the theory of colour harmony.

23

24

COLOUR PSYCHOLOGY Colour psychology is a powerful form of communication in the design world, as it triggers facts in your mind in relations with certain colours. I have looked into colour psychology because I want my designs to be uplifting giving off positive reactions to the final visuals. Depending on the colour it can soothe, irritate, raise blood sugar, suppress appetite and release many more emotions when used in the correct way. As I am using multiple colours I need to balance colour psychology, colour theory and colour harmony to create the best visual design possible.

25

The colours I have used are Red, Blue, Yellow, Pink, Green and White. Here are some theories about them: Red is a physical colour associated with physical courage, strength, warmth, energy, excitement and many more. Blue is a colour associated with intelligence, communication, extraversion friendliness and creativity. Green is a colour associated with balance, refreshment, universal love, restoration, environmental awareness and peace. Pink is a colour associated with tranquillity, nature, warmth and survival of the species. White is a colour associated with hygience, clarity, purity, cleanness, simplicity, sophistication and efficiency. As I have used all these colours I hope the create harmony with each other and their psychological meanings when people view my designs.

26

EFFECTIVE DESIGN COMPOSITION Effective design composition is like the grammar of a language. When the process, the elements, the motion, the modifications, the arrangements and the relationships of a design are put together it can either make or a break a design. Some design principles or design rules are based on Emphasis, Harmony, Unity, Opposition and Balance. These elements of a visual composition have to work together to create a good design. Sometimes artists may break these rules in order to differentiate their designs from others. I will have to apply numerous elements of design to ensure I get good final compositions. To make sure I get the best I will try out a variety of ways displayed by visuals, this will allow me to make sure I get the best possible final design.

27

THE FUN THEORY AWARD The fun theory award recognises those thoughts, ideas and inventions that help improve the fun theory. That fun is the easiest way to change people’s behavior for the better. The piano staircase, The worlds deepest bin and the bottle bank arcade machine are just three examples of what you could do. The competition is an initiative of Volkswagen. I have looked into this competition as I like the simplistic idea of making design fun. I would like to incorporate some fun within my design of revitalizing Nottingham!

28

Culture & Identity

Bringing ideas, customs and social behavior together. Focusing on the identity of Nottinghamshire I have looked into areas of positive and negative space this is because space is often misused. After observing the current designs and ideas I have explored how effective they are at connecting with society.

30

EXPERIENCE NOTTINGHAM Experience Nottingham is Nottingham’s current tourist and promotional company. There website displays just about everything within Nottingham from what’s on to events to simply eating out. Although I do not feel they have done a bad job, I do feel the website is a bit too busy with far too much going off. I would like to see a more simplistic eye catching approach making it easier for people to navigate around the website.

WINDOWS OF OPPORTUNITYS A campaign set up by Dragons Den entrepreneur Doug Richard to raise and invest money within the 21st centaury. It is a tour teaching young and growing firms in the area of the increasing number of financing opportunities on offer and encouraging them to take advantage of the governments seed enterprise investment scheme (SEIS) offering tax relief for investments in young start ups. Although this is not bad advertising I do not feel it is exciting as it does not make me want to go over to look what is going off in the design because it is not eye catching. This is an example of the city’s current designs which I feel could have a lot more emphasis to them.

NOTTINGHAM BROADMARSH SHOPPING CENTRE I took pictures of this shopping centre as it is run down. Although there is planning permission to re-do Broadmarsh and there is some design, there is nothing that I would say is exciting. This is another area of Nottingham that I feel could do with being uplifted by colour and designs that stand out.

39

To the left are a selection of the images I have taken of the current designs within the Broad marsh shopping centre. I have done this because I feel the ideas have potential but are not followed through further enough for the best advertising as it is not eye-catching enough to passers by. The only colour which catches your eye is the orange, the other colours are very subtle. I feel more could have been done to make a more exciting advertisement/ statement of the new shopping centre’s design layout ideas. I like the idea of the signposts as it gives an area of interest, however they could be designed in a more exciting way. This area of space could have a lot more too it and is an area I would class as misused although the designers from INTU have got the right sort of interactive idea but just not dramatic enough.

40

AN EXAMPLE OF INTERACTIVE BILBOARDS COVERING EMPTY SHOPS IN THE BROADMARSH SHOPPING CENTRE These photographs display interactive visuals for an exhibition along some of the blank walls in the Broad marsh shopping centre. I feel this is an interesting and creative way of getting people involved, however where was the promotion before hand? I feel they should of promoted before the exhibition in order to get as many people involved as possible. I also feel it could have been displayed more creatively but I still like the idea.

41

42

EXAMPLES OF CREATIVE USE OF SPACE HOWEVER THE DESIGN USED IS NOT POWERFUL ENOUGH These are a collection of photographs I have taken of designs around Nottingham City Centre. They are designs I feel have potential but have not been brought to life enough, whether it be the style of design e.g. colours and typefaces used or designs I feel have been put in a clever place but is not enough too them to make them visually appealing.

EXPO MILANO 2015 Expo Milano 2015 is the Universal Exhibition that Milan, Italy, will host from May 1 to October 31, 2015. Over this six-month period, Milan will become a global showcase where more than 140 participating countries will show the best of their technology that a concrete answer to a vital need: being able to guarantee healthy, safe and sufficient food for everyone, while respecting the Planet and its equilibrium. In addition to the exhibitor nations, the Expo also involves international organizations, and expects to welcome over 20 million visitors to its 1.1 million square meters of exhibition area. I have looked at the Expo exhibition as visual inspiration due to its use of bright and powerful colours and dramatic sculpture. I have looked at the graphics in particular for this exhibition as I feel it is an interesting take on drawing attention to the city. The design is very up coming and European, which it needs as it is taking on 140 different countries across the world. For my project I have taken great attention to this particular event, as I like the visual styling and use of space. As Nottingham is an up coming city with many plans to change and adapt, I feel it needs a new look to achieve this successfully.

MORAG MYERSCHOUGH

MORAG MYERSCOUGH Morag Myerscough a born and bread London Graphic Designer, works with colour and concept greatly. The majority of her work focuses on environmental Graphic Design projects working on areas such as the pavilion and zynga headquarters, her work is well known. I looked into Myerscough for my project, as her work is powerful with eye-catching colours, patterns and statements. As my project is about working with space and colour she ties into my work perfectly giving me inspiration to create my own designs. I particularly like her work as it is uplifting and intriguing making you feel good down to the bright colours and odd positioning’s of graphics.

51

DULUX “LETS COLOUR”

DULUX “LETS COLOUR” Dulux “Let’s Colour” is a program committed in making a positive difference in peoples lives globally by changing their living environment. The project has its own site: http://www.letscolourproject.com/ which information and photographs on the latest projects are uploaded. I have looked into this project for my research, as its theme is space and colour, which fits in with my project perfectly. This project gives off a feel good approach as it is supporting people less fortunate by giving them an uplifting boost of colour. This project is a good example of how colour theory effects peoples mood, which is why I am bringing more colour for my project in Nottingham.

GUERILLA MARKETING

GUERILLA MARKETING Guerrilla Marketing is an advertising strategy that focuses on low-cost unconventional marketing tactics that yield maximum results. The original term was coined by Jay Conrad Levinson in his 1984 book ‘Guerrilla Advertising’. The term guerrilla marketing was inspired by guerrilla warfare, which is a form of irregular warfare and relates to the small tactic strategies used by armed civilians. Many of these tactics includes ambushes, sabotage, raids and elements of surprise. Much like guerrilla warfare, guerrilla marketing uses the same sort of tactics in the marketing industry. I have looked into these market strategies for my project, as their campaigns are always intriguing and eye-catching. Although I am not creating a campaign like the ones displayed I felt that the marketing was good research into what makes a strong design.

CURRENT PRINNTED MEDIA EXAMPLES FOR THE ADVERTISING IN NOTTINGHAM As part of my project I decided to see what information was available about the city and what events are on. Whilst researching this I decided that Nottingham had plenty of information surrounding it with interesting places to visit and many events to go to however the way in which this information was presented to the public eye via location was poor. Nottingham has a tourist information centre and other information points around the city but nothing that gets it standing out. Overall I felt that the events advertisement didn’t seem exciting which will not get people wanting to be involved. This is where I decided that I would take on the idea of not only making the city a much brighter and colourful place but also try and entice people to some of the upcoming events by making information more accessible to make Nottinghamshire as a whole more lively, upcoming and impressive.

Problem Areas

Evaluating current design, gathering inspiration and finding misused space. Whilst looking into Nottinghamshire as a whole I have come to the conclusion that there is lack of design with elements such as colour and fun. With this in mind how are people going to take notice in the surrounding events if there is not enough promotion and attraction to the city? I will look into multiple designs or advertisements currently out there for inspiration.

68

EXAMPLES OF MISUSED SPACE IN NOTTINGHAM CITY CENTRE These are a collection of photographs I have taken around the city centre. They are only some of the examples of areas I feel could be used better from more eye catching advertisements to areas I feel could just use a make over such as more colour on the outside of buildings such as the car parks etc.

73

74

DULL DESIGN THAT NEEDS REVITALISING Nottingham has man different designs but the areas that came to my attention in which the designs were lacking in were colour and making the information sound exciting. I feel Nottingham needs to be brought up to date with inspirational design using harmonious colours and eye-catching graphics. The picture on the right demonstrates one of the boards giving out information of the yearly events in Nottinghamshire; this is placed in the tourist information centre at the back of the shop. I do not feel this is eye catching enough for someone to go over and read it, especially when it is placed at the back of the shop.

75

76

Proposal

Collecting Ideas, visuals and communications to propose the renewal of the city. Focusing on previous designs and ideas and how they can be enhanced in order to give the best visual outcome possible. After looking into all possible outcomes I will form suggestions of what could be changed and how I will do it. I will focus on spreading a positive feeling with my designs, I will work with misused space and attract more tourism to the city and its events by making the graphics interactive.

78

WHY ARE YOU RENEWING THE CITY? After looking around the city I decided the current designs are not exciting and uplifting enough. There is also a lack of colour and information on events isn’t particularly easy to find. Currently the colour surrounding Nottingham is Green, which is fine although I do feel they could make it more fun and appealing. Nottingham also has websites for events and information but to me it is not something I particularly want to read as its not very straightforward or exciting. After reviewing what is currently out there in Nottingham I decided it was fine but it was not catching peoples eyes and making them want to be involved. I want to create positivity throughout the city by colour, design and messages. I want to also create a communication system to get people more involved with upcoming events in the city. This will hopefully draw in more interaction from people of all ages and build a more interesting and livelier city, which Nottingham has the potential for.

79

HOW ARE YOU GOING TO RENEW THE CITY? I am creating exciting and eye-catching designs that will visually address the city’s culture and identity. I will do this by spreading positivity by colour theory and uplifting messages surrounding the designs. I will also create a communication system to attract attention to upcoming events, which will not only get Nottingham more active but also attract more tourism into the city.

80

WHO ARE YOU ADDRESSING? I am addressing the residents, commuters and tourists that are either living, working or visiting the city. This is because I feel everyone could do with positivity in their everyday lives whether it be them just noticing the billboards and taking on board the colour and phrases or them getting more interactive with the project. I am addressing people of all ages ranges as visuals can appeal to all.

81

WHERE ARE YOU HOPING TO PLACE TO DESIGNS? I will place the designs all over the city centre to start with and then hopefully expand them across both the city and the county council areas of Nottinghamshire. I will put them in the obvious areas such as bus stops, billboards, etc. but also in misused areas such as subways and passages’ attracting attention from commuters and tourists to the city. Also areas in the shopping centres, bins etc. As a main attraction and promotion for the renewal of the city I will place colourful flags surrounding the council house and also have a temporary installation in the town square. I will create an interactive social media site for interacts and also hand outs to promote the designs more.

82

WHAT DO YOU AIM TO CREATE? Summary: 1.Bringing Nottinghamshire city ‘back to life’ through the use of colour and spreading positive messages to create feel good design 2.Redefine the city’s identity by making use of the misused space surrounding it 3.An interactive system to get society to notice up coming events in the city, potentially attracting more people to get involved and on a broader scale bring more tourism into the city

83

Response: 1.I will bring Nottinghamshire back to life by creating interesting visuals focusing on colour and imagery of famous or well-known areas of the city and combining these as collages. The collages will be abstract and will make the flags I want to put up surrounding the council house. I will use 6 main bright colours to experiment with, as I don’t want to limit myself with possibilities. The collages might also be used for billboards or any other form of advertising for the city’s renewal. 2.The redefining of the city will focus on areas that are misused, as these will be good places to advertise as they are unexpected which will hopefully draw attention to the visuals. 3.The interactivity in the city will be based on two things. One is to get people to stop and look at the visuals with positive messages this will hopefully be determined by the use of colours to catch peoples attention. The second will be some form of interactive system to get people involved in finding out what events are on in Nottingham. I will also use more obvious forms of interactive media such as posters and flyers.

84

Design Development

Visual representations, experiments and development processes of my designs before reaching a final outcome. Demonstrating the visual processes and decision making I have gone through to build up to the best possible outcomes. Displaying designs the work and don’t work so well in order to see improvements through my work. It will also show any skills I have had to learn on software such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, etc.

EXPERIMENTS USING BUILDINGS AND MAPS I HAVE MADE I made this style of design by combining the illustrated artworks I had already created of famous buildings or objects associated with the city of Nottingham, with the maps which I also illustrated using Adobe Illustrator. I gave each collage a colour theme and pasted the object/building at random using transparency for extra effect. I feel these are fairly effective.

EXPERIMENTS USING THE COLLAGES MADE FOR THE LETTER FORMS OF THE WORD ‘NOTTINGHAM’ I made these letterforms by using the previous collages I made by combining it with the letters that spell out Nottingham. I did this by having two layers on Photoshop one of which was the collage the other was a letter (the typeface used is News Goth MT which is consistently used throughout my project). Making sure the collage was the second layer I then set it as a clipping mask, which shaped it in the letterform placed as the first layer. I then got rid of any background and saved it.
