From Artistic Director James Knapp Dear Friends of DGMC, We are thrilled to be making our fourth consecutive appearance at the stunning Ellie Caulkins Opera House in the Denver Performing Arts Complex to present Motown and More! It is always a privilege to sing here every year and we are grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with Denver Arts and Venues to bring this concert to you. We look forward to many more collaborations in the future! At this rollicking two hour concert, we are performing some of the greatest songs of the Motown era and beyond. For more than six decades, writers and singers from Detroit, along with famous African American composers and artists from across America, have created many different musical styles that have infused unique energy into pop culture in unforgettable and life changing ways. Our DGMC singers, dancers, narrators, musicians and producers have been preparing this concert since January and we are excited to bring you the best of the best! Looking ahead, we hope you will join us for the exciting final concert series in our 38th Season which will feature the Rocky Mountain regional premiere of Unbreakable, a 2019 co-commissioned musical by famed Broadway composer Andrew Lippa. In addition to his well-known musicals, The Wild Party, The Addams Family and Big Fish, our patrons will remember Mr. Lippa as the composer of the powerful oratorio, I Am Harvey Milk, which was performed for sold out audiences by The Denver Gay Men’s Chorus in 2014. Inspired by August Wilson’s The Ground on Which I Stand, a ten-play cycle documenting the African American experience in this country, Lippa’s Unbreakable will take our audiences on a musical journey chronicling the LGBTQ experience in America from 1900 to the present day. Our singers and soloists, accompanied by chamber orchestra, will explore how our community evolved, triumphed, suffered and soared for the past 120 years. “The history of the world is about communities telling their stories,” says Lippa. “We need to create more of our own stories for gay children. To me, this is missionary work. It’s a kind of spiritual work.” Please make plans to join us on June 12-13 for an entertaining, inspiring and unforgettable musical experience as we bring Unbreakable to the exquisite King Center Concert Hall at the Auraria Higher Education Center. We’re certain you will find this concert the ideal way to kickoff your June 2020 PrideFest celebration in Denver! As always, thank you for joining us at The Ellie Caulkins Opera House and for your unwavering support as we further our mission of “building community through music.” Now, let’s start “Dancing in the Streets”. We have had a ball exploring the richness of this music and its historical significance, and learning some groovy dance steps. We’re excited to share it all with you. So, curtain up! James Knapp Artistic and Managing Director The Denver Gay Men’s Chorus

Founded in 1982 with a passionate commitment to the lives and wellbeing of LGBTQ persons and steadfast dedication to fostering tolerance and acceptance among diverse communities through the power of music, The Denver Gay Men’s Chorus is Colorado’s oldest and largest gay performing arts organization. The 135-member ensemble has performed more than 300 concerts that have entertained, educated, inspired, and empowered audiences of all ages throughout the greater Denver metropolitan area and along Colorado’s Front Range communities. From appearances at many of the region’s premier venues, including Boettcher Concert Hall, The Ellie Caulkins Opera House, Gates Hall, the Paramount Theatre, and the stunning Red Rocks Amphitheatre; to groundbreaking appearances at Coors Field, beneath the soaring spires of the US Air Force Academy Chapel, and on the steps of the Colorado State Capitol as part of inaugural festivities for Governor Jared Polis, the DGMC has become one of Denver’s most well-respected and sought after choral groups. The DGMC’s commitment to fostering safe and supportive enviornments for all Colorado citizens is reflected in a year-long Street Requiem Project to heighten community awareness of issues surrounding homelessness and housing insecurity and included collaborations with nonprofit organizations in Denver, Colorado Springs, and Fort Collins; as well as the 2018 launch of an educational outreach program in the Denver Public Schools to support LGBTQIA+ and at-risk youth in our community. The 2019 - 2020 concert season for the Denver Gay Men’s Chorus will include an inaugural appearance on the Main Stage at the Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities, a collaboration with Museo de las Americas to celebrate Dia de los Muertos in Denver’s Art District on Santa Fe, the Rocky Mountain regional premiere of Unbreakable, and performances at GALA Festival 2020 in Minneapolis. Off Kilter! is a dynamic a cappella troupe comprised of singers from the larger Denver Gay Men’s Chorus. Under the direction of Raul Dominguez, the 17-member ensemble performs throughout the year at numerous small venues in the Denver metropolitan area and engages communities, supports causes, and entertains audiences of all ages with a repertoire that ranges from classical to contemporary. In recognition of their musical excellence, Off Kilter! has participated in masterclasses with the King’s Singers, the world-renowned British men’s a cappella vocal ensemble, and with Dr. Ann Howard Jones, America’s distinguished clinician, adjudicator, teacher, and choral conductor. Off Kilter! is available to perform at private functions. for more information, contact us at offkilter@dgmc.org.
