Letter from the President
Dear Fort Lewis College Family As the President of Fort Lewis College, I welcome you to our beautiful campus. I am looking forward to a wonderful year for the entire Fort Lewis College community! As the only four year public liberal arts college in Colorado, we offer a unique learning environment for our students: small class sizes, a favorable facultystudent ratio that leads to more personal attention, excellent student support services, and one of the finest faculty 4
in the state. Our students benefit from their close interactions with faculty and staff; they also benefit from the unique geographic and cultural diversity of the Four Corners Region. Because of our special geographical location, students are not restricted to learning in traditional classrooms: learning takes place outdoors, thousands of feet up in the mountains or in the canyon lands to our west. Students taking courses in such diverse fields as biology or adventure education can look forward to learning by doing in the rugged beauty of the Four Corners. Fort Lewis College
undergraduate education. Our entire faculty are teaching faculty and our students learn directly from them. Repeatedly, our students say that their professors became not only teachers, but also mentors. That relationship continues after graduation as faculty help graduates succeed in their chosen careers or graduate school. FLC has an even more powerful way to engage students in the exploration of an inclusive culture: through our commitment to educating American Indian students from all over the United States, the entire college has a broad commitment to diversity. Students at Fort Lewis College have the opportunity to work with faculty, staff, and other students from diverse backgrounds that bring unique experiences to the classroom and the co-curricular settings. Education comes alive here, with our beautiful campus in this mountain setting. I am inspired by what I see happening at Fort Lewis College and convinced that your son or daughter will be too. Welcome to the FLC community!
Sincerely,
Member,
Dene Kay Thomas President, Fort Lewis College
We focus on the individual student and how the individual student can incorporate service into society. In so doing, we work to take full advantage of the liberal arts concept of linking education to life. In an increasingly interwoven and competitive world, employers are seeking employees who can think beyond the immediate problems that face them. Our liberal arts education teaches students to anticipate local, national, and even international effects. Your student will not be lost in large classes here. Instead, your student will benefit from our commitment to www.universityparent.com/fortlewis

The Century-Long Legacy of Fort Lewis College Fort Lewis originated in 1892, when the U.S. Army post of the same name was converted to a federal Indian boarding school. In 1911 the federal government deeded the property to the State of Colorado to create an agricultural and mechanical high school, with the agreement that the state would offer qualified Native Americans tuition-free education in perpetuity. Today at FLC you can choose from more than 100 majors, minors, and certificates, as well as a Master of Arts in Education, all backed by the “big picture” perspective of the liberal arts. Our faculty are experts in their fields, mentors, and talented teachers. Real-world experiences through internships, service learning, study abroad, and undergraduate research launch students into professional careers. Like our Southwestern home, FLC is a cultural crossroads: Our students represent 50 states, 17 countries, and 150+ American Indian tribes and Alaskan Native villages. Getting outdoors is a way of life at FLC, with a campus surrounded by more than 2,000 miles of trails through the beautiful and challenging terrain of southwestern Colorado. With mountains all around, biking, hiking, boating, running, skiing, or just enjoying a beautiful view are all right at your doorstep. So it’s easy to balance academics with an active, healthy lifestyle. To see a calendar of campus events visit www.fortlewis.edu 6

The program’s office maintains references for a wide variety of study abroad and internship programs, short-term work and volunteer opportunities, grants and scholarships, and the campus International Club and its activities. Prior to time abroad, students enroll in the one-credit International Studies Pre-Departure class, which helps students investigate the numerous destinations and programs available to them, as well as learn how these programs fit into FLC curriculum and credit transferability guidelines. Cultural Diversity at Fort Lewis College With students from across the globe, including 150+ American Indian tribes and Alaskan Native villages, diversity is more than just a value: it is a daily experience. Reflecting the cultural crossroads that is the American Southwest, the FLC campus is a constant hub of culturallythemed social events, coursework, lectures, art, and architecture that explore and celebrate the varying traditions, backgrounds, and lifestyles of our community. Majors and minors in Anthropology, Native American & Indigenous Studies, Ethnic Studies, and Gender & Women’s Studies encourage students to combine their academic learning with the real-world cultural experiences around them. Fort Lewis College is particularly proud of its century-long commitment to Native American education. In 1911, the federal government deeded the Fort Lewis Indian School property to the State of Colorado 12
on the condition that “Indian pupils shall at all times be admitted to such school free of charge for tuition and on terms of equality with white pupils.” Since then, Colorado has provided any federally recognized tribe member admitted to FLC with a full-tuition scholarship. Today, FLC awards more bachelor’s degrees to Native American students than any other baccalaureate institution in the country. The following resources highlight programs providing support for minority students while promoting respect and understanding of viewpoints that reflect our community’s diversity:
Native American Center (970) 247-7221 The Native American Center provides a welcoming environment and offers learning opportunities for anyone interested in Native cultures and connecting with others through social and cultural events. Common Ground (970) 247-7170 The rich cultural diversity on our campus provides opportunities to embrace differences and can prepare students to interact in an increasingly diverse world. In 2007, FLC started a diversity program called Common Ground. The activities enhance awareness of privilege, identity and bias while learning the facilitation skills central to creating social justice. For information, contact Nancy Stoffer at stoffer_n@fortlewis.edu.
