ABOUT UW OSHKOSH

UW Oshkosh has provided the residents of northeastern Wisconsin with high-quality, affordable education since 1871. As the state’s third largest university, UW Oshkosh is committed to providing students with a broad knowledge base and transferable skills as well as a strong sense of values and ethics to prepare them for civic leadership. The campus community promotes enrichment and active learning with opportunities for sports and recreation, arts and culture, service learning and career-building. More than 13,900 students benefit from the nationally recognized expertise of our faculty, a wide variety of courses and degrees offered — including more than 60 undergraduate degrees, 13 master’s degree programs and one doctoral program — and modest class sizes that foster one-on-one and collaborative learning with professors, rather than teaching assistants. 6

UW Oshkosh, the nation’s first Fair Trade University, has been recognized for its role in embracing sustainable practices, such as building “green,” examining its carbon footprint and promoting social justice. Located on the Fox River and near downtown Oshkosh, the University serves the community and beyond through a multitude of programs, services and partnerships, including collaborations with other colleges, nationally and internationally.

GETTING PREPARED

FINANCIAL AID

Parking

The UW Oshkosh Financial Aid Office serves the University community by providing timely and accurate financial aid and scholarship information and resources to assist students in achieving their educational goals. We are committed to providing quality services while maintaining equality and accountability in the administration of federal, state, institutional and private grants, loans, scholarships and work-study funds. The only application necessary is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), available at www.fafsa.gov. The FAFSA application priority date is March 15 prior to the fall term. The UW Oshkosh Federal School Code is 003920.

With the exception of parking meters and pay stations, all parking on the UW Oshkosh campus is regulated by permit. Students who bring a vehicle, including a motorcycle or moped, to campus at any time need to obtain the proper permit and a copy of the parking regulations from the Parking Services Office, located in the lower level of Blackhawk Commons.

RESIDENCE LIFE Residence Life provides a variety of services to on-campus students. Most first- and second-year students live on campus, unless they choose to commute from their parents’ permanent home address within 45 miles of UW Oshkosh. In addition to convenience, 7

living on campus offers the benefits of a community of peers, access to resources, staff, a safe environment and support for the challenges associated with being a busy college student. More than 100 staff members live in the residence halls to assist students. They provide advice; help develop the community; refer students to other University offices as needed; mediate conflicts; and help plan educational, social and cultural activities to enhance the college experience.

fair trade products. We also sell small gift baskets of goodies and deliver them right to your student's residence hall. The store is open seven days a week during the regular semester (excluding holidays). We accept all major forms of payment, including Titan Dollars. (920) 424-0277 www.uwosh.edu/bookstore

A full-time professional residence hall director (RHD) lives in each hall. All directors have experience in residence life and an interest in and concern for people. The director is responsible for student staff supervision, facilities management, crisis intervention and developing and maintaining an environment conducive to learning and positive living experiences. In the larger halls, the RHDs are assisted by a graduate assistant residence hall director (ARHD). (920) 424-3212 • www.housing.uwosh.edu

Staying Safe and Healthy Campus Safety Resources One of your primary concerns as a parent may be the safety of your student. UW Oshkosh is committed to maintaining a safe and secure educational environment and continues to develop new programs and technologies to better protect the campus community. UW Oshkosh notifies students of campus emergencies online via the University home page as well as campus-wide emails notifications and Titan Alert, a textmessaging alert system. An Emergency Procedures Guide is available and distributed throughout campus to help students, faculty and staff prepare for and respond to an emergency on campus. Students are encouraged to sign up to receive Titan Alert messages via text. www.universityparent.com/oshkosh

Alerts include campus emergencies, inclement weather updates, and University closing updates. Students can register for Titan Alert through the Titan Web system. They may also register additional numbers with Titan Alert by visiting www.uwosh.edu/home/titanalert. In the event of inclement weather, students will be notified of class delays or cancellations via the University home page, campus-wide email and, if registered, Titan Alert. They also can call the weather line at (920) 424-0000. For more information about these and other measures UW Oshkosh has in place to ensure the safety of your student, visit www.uwosh.edu/home/current-students/ safety.

Exploring Academic university studies program

Center for Academic Resources

Every university has “general education requirements: classes students take outside of their major field to prepare them for the many challenges and opportunities the future will present. At UW Oshkosh, general education is offered through our nationally recognized University Studies Program (USP). The USP was designed to introduce students to university and community life while also giving them college-level knowledge and skills in a wide variety of disciplines. Students get to know each other and the campus in small, first-year seminars paired with writing and public speaking courses. By the end of their second year they are contributors to society through community service initiatives accomplished through our network of community partners. The goal of the USP is setting students up for success not only on this campus, but wherever their lives take them.

The Center for Academic Resources (CAR), located in the Student Success Center, provides free tutoring for undergraduate students. Students can receive oneon-one or small group peer tutoring for mainly 100 and 200 level courses on campus. CAR provides a large number of job opportunities as we employ more than 250 students each year. It is a great way to help others and gain a deeper understanding of course material. CAR also offers Supplemental Instruction (SI) and Peer Educator Review Sessions (PERS) programs. These consist of regular review sessions for selected 100 and 200 level courses with large enrollments. As an alternative or in addition to oneon-one tutoring, SI offers students three hours of prepared group review sessions each week of the semester. Students can

(920) 424-1457 • www.uwosh.edu/usp 12

University of Wisconsin Oshkosh

Resources attend as many SI sessions as they want, including special exam reviews prior to major tests in the course. PERS provide one group review session per week. The SI and PERS leaders help the students review the course materials and share the strategies that they used to be successful in the course so that students can learn more efficiently. A third service is English assistance. Students for whom English is a second or non-native language often want to further develop English skills. They can schedule individual appointments with the professional English language tutor. Together, they can work on general or course-specific vocabulary, pronunciation and oral presentations, English grammar and textbook reading. (920) 424-2290 • www.uwosh.edu/car

www.universityparent.com/oshkosh

www.uwosh.edu/registrar/ undergradbulletins/2013-2015

Disability Services The Disability Services Office provides accommodations to students with documented disabilities through the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Our goal is to provide equal opportunity and equal challenge in the pursuit of your student’s academic goals. Our office offers permanent and temporary reasonable accommodations for students with physical, medical, psychological, ADD/ADHD and learning disabilities. Accommodations are designed on an individual basis and may include note taking, proctoring, alternative testing, extended time testing, recording of lectures, interpreting and alternative electronic text. 13

Developmental Mathematics Tutoring Lab The Mathematics Department operates a free drop-in tutor lab. The Mathematics Tutoring Lab is coordinated by a faculty member and a graduate student. Tutors are students who have taken those classes and earned a good grade. The lab is staffed from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and at least two evenings a week. Your student can come with specific questions or just come to work on their homework in a supportive place. (920) 424-3968 www.uwosh.edu/mathematics/resources/ tutor-labs

Polk Library Polk Library provides the University community with access to a wide range of books, ebooks, online articles and streaming videos. Polk 101 offers students a study space that combines the best of a traditional library with a comfortable, technology-rich environment. Students can check out laptops, use GroupFinder on their mobile device to reserve group study rooms, and use wireless printing from their laptops. Resource Sharing gives UW Oshkosh students speedy access to all the books and videos in the entire UW system. Students can chat with a librarian 24 hours a day, seven days a week for help with their work! (920) 424-4333 www.uwosh.edu/library

14

University of Wisconsin Oshkosh

Reading and Study Skills Center The Reading and Study Skills Center offers students at all stages of academic development an opportunity to acquire more sophisticated reading and study techniques. Students may choose to schedule an individual consultation or attend a variety of one-hour workshops with topics such as test preparation, test taking, textbook study, active learning strategies, note taking and Praxis I exam preparation. Self-help resources also are available, including learning strategy packets, lending library and online links. In addition, students are encouraged to register for any of our one or twocredit Academic Skills courses such as Developmental Reading, Comprehensive Study Skills, Applied Study Skills and College Reading Strategies. (920) 424-1031 www.uwosh.edu/readingstudycenter

Registrar’s Office The Registrar’s Office assists students with enrollment verifications, transcripts, veteran services, graduation, registration for classes and name changes. Students use TitanWeb, our online student information system, for most of their registration transactions. (920) 424-3454 www.uwosh.edu/registrar

Student Support Services (A TRiO Program) Student Support Services (SSS) offers guidance and support for first-generation students (neither parent has a four-year college degree) and/or limited-income students. Services include academic advising, strategies for academic success, career and major exploration, and connections to campus resources. Students with documented disabilities may also be served. Only 300 students are members of the SSS program, (continued on p. 18)

Undergraduate Advising Resource Center Located in the Student Success Center, the Undergraduate Advising Resource Center (UARC), in partnership with the campus community, seeks to empower students to articulate and achieve their personal, educational and career goals. Incoming students meet with and are assigned to a UARC adviser during orientation. Later, a faculty adviser may be designated as determined by the academic department of the students major.

STUDENTS ARE GUIDED BY AND WORK WITH ADVISERS TO:

18

Identify/clarify their interests, skills, values, goals and connect them to majors and careers.

Generate options for students with regard to course selection, majors and minors.

Understand connections between academic preparation and career opportunities.

Learn and understand University, college and department policies, procedures and requirements for graduation.

Receive assistance with their study habits and academic progress.

Connect with campus resources.

Take responsibility for and follow through on decisions made during advising sessions.

Students also receive help from Peer Advising Liaisons (PALs), UW Oshkosh students who offer academic support and a peer’s perspective about college. A typical course load will range from 12 to 18 credits per semester. All students will complete a minimum of 120 credits to graduate including University Studies Program (general education), degree and major requirements. Some students may also need to complete remedial coursework. Students must average 15 credits per semester to complete 120 credits within eight semesters (four years); remedial coursework will extend this time. (920) 424-1268 • uwosh.edu/advising

Writing Center The Writing Center offers all UW Oshkosh students free writing feedback and support. We work with students in many programs and majors in hundreds of different classes, as well as helping with applications or other personal writing. Our one-on-one sessions last up to 50 minutes, and students are allowed up to three appointments per week. (920) 424-1152 www.uwosh.edu/wcenter

In traditional study abroad and exchange programs, UW Oshkosh students travel individually or in groups to study at one of UW Oshkosh’s partner institutions abroad or in the U.S. Students are enrolled directly in the host institution and typically are part of the general student body. These programs offer a high level of immersion, a wide range of courses at the host institution and use of the host institution’s facilities.

Study Abroad/Away

(920) 424-0775 • www.uwosh.edu/oie/ abroad/familyguide.php

Xpeditions outdoor recreation offers a climbing wall, equipment rentals, and a variety of trips and clinics.

Study abroad/away is a transformative experience leading to personal growth and active engagement in the pursuit of knowledge and skills. It offers options for advancing unique and diverse personal and professional goals. UW Oshkosh runs programs abroad and within the U.S. that can last from two weeks to a full year. On faculty-led programs, a UW Oshkosh professor accompanies a group of students throughout their program or on an entry tour at the beginning of the experience. These programs offer a guided experience relative to a particular academic discipline. Students typically earn UW Oshkosh credit.

University Dining UW Oshkosh has a variety of delicious dining venues available throughout campus with convenient hours of operation. From a coffeehouse to a madeto-order salad station and all-you-careto-eat commons, there are options that cater to nearly all preferences and dietary needs. University Dining offers flexible meal plans for both our residential and commuter students. Our meal plans are a perfect blend of meals and Titan Dollars, allowing students to have the flexibility of when, where and what they choose to eat. All of our dining locations accept a variety of payment methods, from flexible meal plans and Titan Dollars to cash and credit card. (920) 424-2391 • dining.uwosh.edu
