Page 1

Welcome to

Webster University! Dear Parents and Families, On behalf of the entire Webster University community, welcome! We are glad you and your student chose Webster University as your college “home.” I hope this guide and the webster.edu website will be helpful to you as you learn more about the university, its policies, programs and activities. We are eager to begin this year and know it will be a special one. We launched our Centennial celebration last fall and will wrap up the year-long celebration in November. This fall we will break ground for the new interdisciplinary science building. We encourage all of our students to study abroad, recently expanded to include Greece, Italy, and Ghana. This year’s entering class helps us open our next century; together we will create the foundation for Webster’s future.

I look forward to seeing you and your student on campus during your time at Webster. Please encourage your student to sign up for my monthly open office hours, posted at www.webster.edu/ president/office-hours. You can learn more about programs for parents and families by contacting Billy Ratz in the office of Alumni & Parent Relations, at (314) 968-7007. We encourage you to be involved and to visit campus often; Webster is now your home.

Go Gorloks! Dr. Elizabeth (Beth) J. Stroble President, Webster University president@webster.edu twitter: @websterpres

Parent Relations The Parent Relations Office is dedicated to connecting Webster parents to the University and to one another. The main purpose of Parent Relations is to connect parents to the Webster family. Programs offered include Family Weekend during Homecoming in the fall, a Parents Reception during Orientation and a variety of events during the spring semester. The Parent Relations Office also publishes the Parent Connection e-newsletter that is sent out every month during the academic year. Recognizing the important role parents play in the success of their children’s college experience, the Webster University Parents Council has been created to establish a formal channel of communication between the parent community and the University.

2

The Parents Council gives voice to parents and provides an opportunity for Webster University to share important information on curriculum, study abroad opportunities, student life, financial aid, capital improvements, athletics and programmatic news from deans and faculty. The Parents Council plays an integral role in the University’s Parent Relations, and specifically, serves as a vital resource to Parent Relations planning and execution. Parent Corps volunteers work under the direction of the Webster University Parents Council in conjunction with the University’s Office of Advancement. Parent Corps volunteers could be asked to perform a range of activities depending upon the needs of the University. Examples of activities include writing personal notes to the parents of admitted students, serving on a discussion panel for the benefit of parents of prospective students, hosting a booth at University Open House, volunteering to work alongside

an Admissions Officer at a College Fair, providing a testimonial for a Webster website, and other opportunities as they are identified. For more information on Parent Relations visit www.webster.edu/parents

In recognition of the Webster University Centennial, the University held a contest in early 2015 to create a new alma mater that represents the University’s mission in its second century. The last alma mater was selected via student contest in 1945. Department of Music chair Jeffrey Carter led this spring’s contest, open to submissions from Webster faculty, staff, students and alumni. “Webster U. You Are Our Home,” by Christopher Poetz (Class of 2016), was selected based upon the overall appropriateness of the lyrics and music, with particular attention to how the lyrics reflect Webster’s mission, vision and values. We hold you dear and close to our heart, With strength and pride and wisdom to impart.

• Established: 1915 • Became coeducational: 1962 • In 1983 Webster College became Webster University • Home Campus: Webster Groves, MO • 5 Schools and Colleges: • Arts & Sciences • Communications • Education • Leigh Gerdine College of Fine Arts

What is a Gorlok? The name “Gorlok” was derived from the combination of two streets that intersect in the heart of “old Webster:” Gore and Lockwood Avenues. A campus committee considered many suggestions and voted several times before settling on the unusual nickname in June 1984. The Gorlok is Webster University’s mascot. It is a mythical creature that is reported to have the paws of a speeding cheetah, horns of a fierce buffalo, and the face of a dependable Saint Bernard. The myth of the Gorlok “embodies the highest standards of speed, agility and stamina in an atmosphere of fairness and good conduct.”

And so, our dear Alma Mater we plea:

We are fond and bound by our diverse community.

Career Planning & Development Between media coverage and research on the job market, it is clear that today’s students cannot wait to think about gaining real world experience until their last semester of college. In today’s marketplace, it is essential for students to explore and set clear career-related goals, implement a career plan and obtain experience prior to graduation. In order to be effective in these areas, students need to start thinking of these things early in their college career. While students aspire to achieve career success, it can be unclear when and how to get started. The Career Planning & Development Center is available to assist students with understanding these issues. Staff members meet with students one-

6

on-one and can address all areas of their career development — from the freshman who is unsure of what to major in to the sophomore who wants to begin identifying summer internship opportunities to the junior who is interested in exploring graduate programs to the graduating senior who is ready to obtain a first professional position.

First Year Experience Programs

Whatever issues students may have, staff members in the Career Planning & Development Center are available to meet with students to discuss their individual needs and questions. Our staff members collaborate with students so that they gain the skills and confidence necessary to succeed.

Programs and events include:

Housing According to the American Council on Education, students who live on-campus have better grades, take more units, and are more likely to persist to graduation. Research also indicates that grade point average for residence hall students is related significantly to environmental variables such as living on campus. All freshmen enrolled at the St. Louis main campus are required to live on campus for their first two years at Webster University. Exceptions to this requirement are granted for freshmen living with their parents within a 35-mile radius of the main campus in Webster Groves. Immigration Advising The MCISA provides education and advice to students regarding immigration federal regulations and how they can maintain their visa status. To receive advice students should make an appointment in advance with Bethany Keller, Assistant Director, Multicultural Center and International Student Affairs. Orientation and Cultural Adjustment In an effort to ease the adjustment to life in a new country, the MCISA offers students an orientation to academic and social life in the United States of America. Through International Student Orientation, new students learn about the resources available to them and are given guidance and support from the MCISA staff. Social Security Cards and Driver’s Licenses The MCISA assists international students in obtaining their Social Security Cards, Driver’s Licenses and/or State IDs. Students are informed about this service during orientation and sometimes referred to the MCISA by other departments. The MCISA assists students by informing them of the proper paperwork needed and providing transportation. Students are asked to sign up online to request transportation.

Student Leadership Opportunities The MCISA offers numerous opportunities for student leadership and volunteerism. The MCISA employs between 4–6 workstudy and budget students each year and one international graduate assistant. In addition to paid positions, the MCISA is always in need of volunteers at events and open to suggestions for future programs and events. The MCISA also offers select community volunteer opportunities, including a Webster Works World Wide project and the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Week of Service. Tax Assistance During tax filing season several tax workshops are offered which are designed to help international students file their income tax through a step-by-step approach. Students will be informed in advance via e-mail and/or flyers to sign up for one of these workshops. Transportation We understand that it is difficult to get around town when you do not have transportation. The MCISA provides transportation to international students through scheduled shopping trips and airport pick-up when arriving to campus for the first time. Students are asked to use our online sign up form to request transportation assistance.

Student Engagement The complete college learning experience can’t be contained in a classroom. It’s so much more. It might include living with a roommate for the first time, attending a Saturday afternoon basketball game with friends or working as a reporter for the student newspaper. A myriad of opportunities exists at Webster University. There are over sixty official student organizations on Webster’s main campus that include the Association of African American Collegians, Dance Club, Webster LGBTQ Alliance, Student Ambassadors, Webster Quidditch and many more. There is an active Student Government Association that works closely with the administration to improve life on campus for all Webster students. Students can get involved in athletics or attend a large-scale event put on by Campus Activities or the Multicultural Center and International Student Affairs. Whether your student would like to attend a large-scale concert, casino night or international week, there is something for everyone. The Conservatory, the St. Louis Repertory Theatre, the Webster Film Series offer arts opportunities at a discounted rate or free for all Webster students throughout the year and there are various art exhibits that make Webster University a city in itself. Information about student organizations and activities can be found online at www.involved.webster.edu.

Study Abroad In 1978, Webster opened a campus in Geneva, Switzerland, capitalizing on the global perspective the city would add to student education. The Geneva campus became a popular one, not just for Americans looking to study in Europe, but also for Europeans seeking an Americanaccredited education. The popularity of the program led to the establishment of other European campuses: Vienna, Austria; Leiden, the Netherlands; and London, England. Campuses and programs since have been added in Chengdu and Shanghai, China; Bangkok and Cha-Am/ Hua Hin, Thailand; and Accra, Ghana, and Athens, Greece. Webster University undergraduate students can also take advantage of our affiliations with universities in China, Belgium, Germany, Spain, Japan and Mexico. Additionally, Webster offers a number of faculty-led short-term programs that take students elsewhere throughout the world. These locations add a global perspective that stretches across the Webster curriculum.

Webster’s commitment to providing excellent study abroad options can be seen in a number of ways. Our programs consistently rank in the top 2% of programs in the U.S., and students consistently report that studying abroad was one of the most impactful and life-changing parts of their academic experience. Webster provides a number of scholarships for studying abroad, including the Sverdrup Scholarship and the Webster World Traveler award that covers the round-trip airfare from St. Louis to their international destination. The WWTP award helps to provide students with the opportunity to become well-educated world travelers. Find more information on Webster University’s study abroad options, online at www.webster.edu/studyabroad or in the Office of Study Abroad in Sverdrup Hall.
