BEST OF CSU

From Your Editor

T

he City of Fort Collins has a charm that sets it apart from many others. From the many summer music festivals to the wide variety of breweries to choose from, this city has something for everyone to enjoy. In the 29 years Rocky Mountain Student Media Corporation has produced the Best of CSU magazine, the mission has been to showcase all the businesses in Fort Collins that you, the reader, have come to love. We took your feedback, and while many of us have our own favorite spots to visit not included in this magazine, we believe we are highlighting the best Fort Collins has to offer. It has been a pleasure to work with every business owner, community member and Rocky Mountain Student Media member who contributed to this year's edition of Best of CSU. It was wonderful to collaborate with you on a project that highlights our beautiful city and all its charm. I'd like to give a special thank you to the team of RMSMC members who took the time to prepare this magazine. Thank you for representing Fort Collins in all its wonderful charm.

or the best breakfast in town, look no further than Silver Grill Cafe, located in Fort Collins’ own Old Town. This Colorado State University hotspot has been serving hot meals since 1933, but its history goes back even farther. In 1912, the cafe was purchased for only $140 by Charlie Liggett and Chink Brown. Soon after purchasing, Brown left the cafeto be replaced by Leonidas “Flossie” Widger. Renamed to the “Silver Grill Cafe" by a hungry sign painter, who traded his window painting for a pork chop lunch, Ligget and Widger operated the cafe until 1918 and sold it to seek other opportunities. Serving the community for over 20 years, Gib’s Bagels runs on the beliefs of their owner Mike Howland: The recipe is in the process, not just the ingredients. Bagels take 24 hours to prepare due to a several step process that the dough must go through. No step is missed, and any bagel that misses a single step isn’t even served. Patrons have a wide variety of meals to choose from. From breakfast sandwiches to lunch options and, of course, bagels, you can expect a taste of greatness every visit to Gib’s.

Cream Cheese Whether it's Krazy Karl's or Cosmo's, no Fort Collins pizza would be complete without a cream cheese topping. As one of the most popular pizza

toppings in a college town, cream cheese is a must-add topping to almost any pizza. There is nothing like bringing home a hot pizza with small dollops of cream cheese strategically placed along with whatever other pairing you favor. Next time you stop into a local Fort Collins pizza joint like Krazy Karl's or Cosmo's, be sure to take the dive and try something different with a cream cheese topping. BEST OF CSU | 15

If you are at Jim's, you will have a wide variety of sauces to choose from. Jim's wings rates their sauces on a heat scale. This scale includes mild, medium, hot, X-hot, Wayhot and RamHot. Ram's Village

S

o you’ve moved out of the dorms, but now where do you call home? If you ask Best of CSU, the answer would be Ram’s Village. Rams Village offers students affordable housing just west of campus and within walking distance to all of your classes. But if you don’t feel like walking, Ram’s Village is conveniently located along several TransFort bus routes, allowing students to arrive on campus quickly and comfortably. Floor plans include a one bedroom one bathroom, two bedrooms one bathroom, three bedrooms one split bathroom or, their largest option, a four bedroom and two-and-a-half bathroom apartment. So whether you are kicking it alone or moving with friends, Ram's Village will have options for you with rates that depend on which floor plan you select. Students can also apply to get a remodeled apartment, which features a painted accent wall and updated kitchen appliances.

Decked out with major appliances, cable television, individual WiFi and much more, life at Ram’s Village can be sweet once you get to your apartment. Students are offered individual leases with monthly leasing terms, so you don’t have to depend on your roommate to get you their check for this month’s rent. Two pools, two hot tubs, weight room, cardio studio and several laundry rooms are some of the amenities students can expect when moving here. Ram's Village is also conveniently located near the many restaurants, shops and more that make up Campus West. Enjoy a craft beer, buy a new outfit or grab a slice of pizza all within walking distance of your home. So if you are moving off-campus or looking for a new place to live, take a stop into the Ram’s Village leasing office and get yourself a great place to live.

NORTHERN COLORADO’S FIRST FASHION TRUCK – AND NOW A SHOP ON LAUREL STREET IN FORT COLLINS! Acey Designs is a locally owned women’s boutique that was created with the focus of providing a welcoming, serviceoriented experience for customers in a mobile atmosphere. Since hitting the road in 2014 with the fashion truck, Acey Designs has become one of the most successful mobile retailers on the Front Range. And now, their online shop and new brick and mortar store promise to offer the same exceptional style and service

that customers have grown to love. “Our business is SO MUCH MORE than selling clothes,” says owner Allyson Smit. “We help women feel confident and beautiful by offering distinctive pieces that you’ll be excited to wear as soon as you walk out the door.” Acey Designs partners with community non-profits and hosts ‘Shop for a Cause’ events with a percentage of the proceeds going directly back to those

organizations. They also host local fundraising events for soccer teams, school and youth groups, “Who doesn’t love finding things that make your heart sing – a fabulous dress, the perfect cozy sweater, or a stunning necklace? But what if those things could also give back to someone in need, lift someone’s spirit, or inspire confidence? I’d say that’s the whole idea behind our purpose.”

BEST BOUTIQUE

White Balcony G

ifts, clothing, accessories and more abound at this quaint Fort Collins loca-

tion. White Balcony, a locally-owned and operated boutique located on the strip of downtown Fort Collins, has been serving curious patrons for 15 years. Carrying a mix of everything from greeting cards to “edgy merchandise, a visit to White Balcony will treat customers to many color-coordinated tables that hold all of these products. One thing that sets this boutique out as the best of CSU is their constantly changing color palette. Throughout the store, items are separated by different color-specific tables, which are constantly changing and moving depending on how the store decides to set up the merchandise. The White Balcony website states that one of the most inter-

esting parts of their retail working experience is watching people gravitate towards the color that they love or even the one they happen to be wearing. This unique location also tries to stay up on popular trends when placing merchandise, but their website will tell you that they have a thing for cats and pugs, which shows when browsing the many tables and racks of purchasable goodies. White Balcony is open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays through Thursdays, and from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. for late night on Fridays and Saturdays. They also offer a number of holiday hours throughout the year, so even when it is Christmas Eve you can come in and browse for that perfect gift for you or a loved one. Take a trip to White Balcony and leave with something new and unique every time.

BEST HIKE

Horsetooth Rock Trail

H

orsetooth Rock Trail is a moderate hiking trail that loops around the peak that rises above the city of Fort Collins. This popular hiking destination is suitable for both novice and experienced hikers, and the heavily trafficked hiking loop reaches just about 5.7 miles and totals 1,584 feet of elevation gain. With fantastic views overlooking the city and even a waterfall, it’s no wonder the trail up to Horsetooth Rock has become a staple hiking location in the Fort Collins community. Horsetooth Rock, which caps Horsetooth Mountain, was

named by European settlers who believed that the rock bore a great resemblance to a horse’s tooth. The beautiful and relaxing scenery continues to draw back locals and new students alike, making Horsetooth Rock a well-recognized and loved landmark. It is best used from April until late October and is open not only to people but to dogs, as long as they are kept on a leash. For a quick nature getaway, try this trail and you’ll see why students are so eager to put on their hiking shoes.
