A MESSAGE TO GRADUATES FROM FROM CSU PRESIDENT TONY FRANK:
May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view. May your mountains rise into and above the clouds. Edward Abbey
Dear Graduates, Congratulations to our Spring 2018 graduates of Colorado State University! On behalf of the faculty, staff, students, and alumni of this great university, please know that we honor you and all you have achieved during your academic career, and we look forward to seeing what your future holds. In case any of you need a reminder of why your commencement matters, consider that less than 10 percent of the world’s population today holds a college degree. That percentage declines even further when you look at the number of people on this planet who have obtained a master’s or a Ph.D. You have accomplished something that most other human beings never have the opportunity to even attempt, and that accomplishment provides you with an unparalleled platform to continue to make an impact and a difference in our world. Use it. You may not be able to see your impact overnight, but the work you do and the choices you make once you cross that commencement stage really do matter. Not long ago, an alumnus from the early 1960s sent my office one of his old college yearbooks. Many of the fresh young student faces on those pages turned out to be familiar. They are people who went on to become state leaders, top scientists, respected faculty, groundbreaking business leaders, important journalists and artists, and even members of our governing board. When they posed for their yearbook photos, they were just happy to be graduating. They had no idea what influence they would wield during the course of their lives and careers. But opportunities arose for them, and they seized those opportunities – and as a result, their influence has been profound. In this age of Instagram, we don’t have college yearbooks anymore, but I imagine that when future CSU presidents look back at the Class of 2018 from the vantage point of 30 or 40 years from now, they will be viewing you in the same way – marveling at how far you have traveled, at the ways in which you have shaped our world, and at the changes you’ve pushed to make this a better, healthier, more equitable world for all people. Today, this may not be your plan. Right now, you may just be focused on getting a job. You are probably feeling – in fact, I hope you are

feeling -- some eagerness just to finish, to be done, and to move on with your life after CSU. That’s absolutely reasonable. But once you get a little distance from this moment, we hope you will also find that your education has equipped you to step out into the world and make choices that will lead you toward a fulfilling, productive life—a life that consistently means something to the people and communities with whom you interact. You may or may not be able to land your dream job, but there are important, meaningful jobs out there that need doing and that will help build your skills and experience, expand your understanding of the world, and move you closer to your goals. There are people and places in this world who need the talents and knowledge you have to offer. Our world has complex problems that need solving, and the responsibility for solving most of them will fall to those who have had the privilege of an education.
Congratulations, Warner Rams. Thank you for sharing your time, talent, and dreams with us.
As you take on those problems, as you rise to the challenges ahead and achieve more than you ever thought possible, remember that your University takes pride in you and the difference you’re able to make for our world. The term “commencement” is used at graduation because this is the start of a new beginning. Make the most of it, and take on your future with a sense of confidence and optimism. Then don’t forget to come back to your alma mater a few years from now to let us know how your life is unfolding. We at CSU are proud of you, and we celebrate this achievement with you. Congratulations again to the Class of 2018! Dr. Tony Frank President

A MESSAGE TO GRADUATES FROM FROM ASCSU PRESIDENT
CSU JOIN US TO CELEBRATE
GRADUATES GR A DUATE S
Everyone in college has thought at least once, “Wow, I am going to die alone, jobless, and broke.” I know I have, hundreds of times during the last four years, and sometimes we don’t know what’s worse – thinking pessimistically about the future or facing the never-ending reality that is college life. We all at one-point struggle through this stage of our early adult lives. But, nonetheless we made it! We are graduating, and now is our time to show the world what we are made of. People say that you can’t make everyone happy, but “Tony Frankly” I think that statement is B.S. In the words of Jackie Moon - “E.L.E. Everybody Love Everybody.” As a graduating senior myself, I have taken time to reflect on my CSU experience and some of the wonderful memories that, as a result of my four years here, I get to cherish forever. Such as the time my roommates hung my bike from our balcony before running it over with their cars, or the time my professor pulled open an old laptop that still ran Windows 98. I still smile every time I think about those delicious Parm burgers. But, my favorite memory is getting to meet, interact with and hear about the people at this school that are truly making a difference. None of us would be where we are without the support systems in our life. This graduating class is just one of those support systems that I hope is maintained forever. There was a time when I couldn’t match my socks to save my life, I cried to my mom about my homework, and all I wanted was

to eat pop tarts and watch cartoons. That time was three days ago. And for all of you Rams that feel the same way, remember that Rams Take Care of Rams. We must keep our level heads and our youthful attitudes as we push ahead. Change may not come in a day, but you must continue to love the world that surrounds you and work to give a smile to everyone in your life. Thank you to all the members of this community. You all are what makes CSU great.

REASONS TO RETURN TO CSU A
lthough we look forward to graduating and leaving Fort Collins for new opportunities and growth, we may find ourselves asking, “when will I go back to CSU again?” or “how is it going to change?” while we’re away. CSU is constantly in a state of change which is just the reason for more alumni to return to Fort Collins, even after graduation.
There are many reasons to return to CSU, even after the “glory days”, one being the upcoming football season. With the addition of the on-campus stadium, there is a unifying power that comes with it; where old friends can reunite on the New-Belgium beer deck and catch up while watching the Rams play football. With football comes Homecoming, a weekend filled with celebrations of all things CSU and reunions of friends and families. The Alumni Association at CSU hosts several events during Homecoming weekend, such as the Homecoming Parade, the Lighting of the A, the Bonfire at the Lagoon, and the Homecoming 5k on Saturday before the game. They even host an Alumni Tailgate where you’re bound to run into another graduate, friend or an old professor, the perfect place for you and your group of friends to meet up. There are still many exciting on-going projects happening on CSU’s campus, with 4 large construction projects in progress right now. According to the Facilities Management website, there are two projects scheduled to be finished by Fall of 2018: the Michael Smith Natural Resources Building addition to the Warner College of Natural Resources and the JBS Global Food Innovation Center addition to Animal Sciences. Along with these building openings in the Fall, construction for the C. Wayne McIlwraith Translational Medicine Institute and Horse Barn is in progress at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, scheduled to finish November of this year, as well as the Health Education Outreach Center, scheduled to finish Winter of 2019. Even if this construction is located outside of your college or major, the new external developments of CSU’s campus will be incredible to see once they are complete. Finally, if CSU’s fun events and beautiful new additions to campus aren’t enough to bring you back, at least the town of Fort Collins will! With several breweries, outdoor activities and events going on in Fort Collins throughout the year, there is no doubt you will be back at some point. Events like the Colorado Brewers Festival in June, New West Fest in August, or Tour De Fat in September are perfect events to bring you back to town to check out CSU again and support your favorite local businesses. With so much growth happening on our campus, CSU alumni have a lot to look forward to next time they come back to Fort Collins.

PERKS OF BEING A FIFTH-YEAR STUDENT If you are one of the lucky students who stuck around for an extra year or two (or three), you are not alone. According to research, in the United States, only 20-36% of graduates from four-year universities graduate in the first four years.
struggles. Although, just because you are doing extra time in school, doesn’t mean you should limit yourself to friendships. There is never a bad time to make a new friend, and there’s nothing wrong with a little extra support from new friends.
An overwhelming number of students attend anywhere between an extra semester to two-year at university. Reasons for this include aspects like performance in school, transfer credits, study abroad programs and unavoidable life circumstances (such as an injury).
USING THE GIFT OF TIME WISELY
Although your bank account may not be happy about spending more time in university, there are benefits in addition to the setbacks of being a fifth-year student. YOU ARE TOP DOG At this point, you know the lay of the land. You have been here longer than most and you’ve had time to learn all the shortcuts and resources around campus: like where exactly to go to print for free. Being a fifth-year also gives you an advantage over younger students in your classes because you have a better idea of how to manage your time and how to approach your professors. You’ve had at least four years of practice after all. You may not know everyone on campus anymore, but you do know some people who truly matter: other fifth-year students! These are the people who are in the same boat that you are, and are probably dealing with similar social, academic, and economic

The extra year obviously grants the gift of extra time, with which you can space out your credits. This means you can focus more on a smaller course load and find greater success because you can devote more time to less subjects. You might also be able to add a concentration, a minor, or even an extra major with that type of college plan. Your fifth year in college gives you more time to polish your GPA, and perhaps the opportunity to retake a class that didn’t go over as well as you wished it had. The extra year allows you a chance to go through the course with a clean slate, and an opportunity to apply the new knowledge you have gained since the last time you attempted the course. Be it by choice or by force, the fifth year is becoming more and more common, and it’s nothing to be ashamed of. Being here a little longer gives you the chance to intentionally shape and then share your experiences with other students who might benefit, like the Ramily member you are. Whether you were held back by transfer credits, course repeats, or you just wanted to hang out a little longer, we’re all here for a reason. And in a beautiful town like Fort Collins, why rush to graduate anyway?

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT TIPS FOR AFTER GRADUATION: BUILDING CONNECTIONS:
SET UP INFORMATIONAL INTERVIEWS:
BRAND YOURSELF:
If you don’t have a LinkedIn, MAKE ONE! LinkedIn is a great tool for building your professional network and making connections around the globe. It’s also a convenient way to hear about jobs in your area of study or other areas of work that you might be interested in.
If you have a professional connection in your area, set up a meeting over coffee to gather information and obtain advice about their field. They might not be looking to hire you, but a positive impression can lead to positive connections that can be valuable in the future. Although it’s a casual meeting, be sure to keep it professional by showing up on time, bringing your resume and following up with a thank you.
A brand is more than a name or logo, its a combination of impressions and experiences that can be associated with you. Having a clear articulate brand will make you stand out on paper or at an interview because you appear more confident and comfortable. This increases your credibility and it makes you more memorable.

ALWAYS FOLLOW UP: Whether you’re submitting an application or interviewing with someone, always follow up. After applying for a job, reach out a week later to check on the progress of your application if you haven’t heard back. Sometimes it just takes a small reminder to get someone to look at it and you’re showing your interest in the position. After interviewing with someone, send a follow up email to thank them for their time within 48 hours. This also shows interest and lets the employer know you value their time.

BIOLOGY GRADUATE STUDENT PAVES WAY FOR WOMEN IN STEM fter graduation, biology major Lauren Harrison will have a unique research experience under her belt. She works in the zebrafish heart development lab at CSU, where undergraduates have the chance to work with graduate students in groundbreaking genetic research. Harrison is trained to microinject the molecule, morpholino, into zebrafish embryos. Morpholino modifies gene expression in the fish and alters the amount of certain proteins that specific cells can make. The zebrafish heart development lab gives further insight into how genes play a role in the function and development of the embryonic heart. The research environment is one where collaboration and learning are a cornerstone. Harrison said her favorite part of the lab is that the graduate students “are really willing to teach me all of the procedures and want me to get in there.” Harrison will stay in Fort Collins and hopes to work in the lab postgraduation, then continue her education. “My plan is to take the MCAT prep course because I really want to score well on it the first

time. Then I’ll start to apply for med schools,” Harrison said. Harrison plans to continue challenging herself and working in genetic research, and she hopes that her representation will encourage other women to pursue STEM careers. Harrison recognizes how the science field has changed since previous generations and how CSU has created an environment for gender equality. “We just need to continue to put women working in science in the spotlight,” said Harrison. “It can inspire younger generations to get into it.” After four years at CSU, Lauren reflected on the town of Fort Collins and the values of our community, “the general amount of people values good things, a clean environment and equal learning for all.” After graduation, Harrison will miss the interconnectedness of the students and the opportunities for learning. “I value and love what I learn and I’m learning about life, that’s what biology is,” said Harrison. She cannot wait to further her studies, be it more research positions or medical school. With her experience, education and motivation, she will undoubtedly succeed in her goals.

RAMRIDE WILL GREATLY MISS ITS MOST INNOVATIVE GRADUATING SENIOR n his time at CSU, Thomas Walker has been an essential part of RamRide’s success. While pursuing a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, Walker worked with RamRide and contributed some pivotal innovations to the program.
Walker started as a nightly operations coordinator at RamRide when he was a sophomore. He not only helped check in volunteers to the office, but also assisted with the programs’ processes and technology. In his time with RamRide, Walker created a zoning efficiency equation to rework the zoning scheme for Ramride. He then monitoring the zones and altered them based on ideal efficiency for RamRide requests. Walker also programmed a wait-time calculator to see how long it will take for a RamRide pickup to arrive from the time requested. After 3 years of employment at RamRide, Walker was named CSU’s Student Employee of the Year. He went on to win the Western Region’s Student of the Year Award and then the National Student Employee of the Year Award. Walker humbly accepted an invitation to speak at the National Student Employment Association Conference in Milwaukee this upcoming October. “I was just

surprised,” Walker said. “It was so nice because my supervisor wrote such a glowing recommendation for me, and that’s what did it.” Since winning such prestigious awards, Walker has moved to a new position. As RamRide’s Data Acquisition and Analysis Coordinator, Walker’s daily duties include going through the RamRide data each week. “The goal of my position is to look at the data and try to see if there is a way to try and improve the program,” Walker said. His main focus is on time and location efficiency.

After he graduates, Walker plans to work at Raytheon as a Systems Engineer in Aurora, Colorado. Walker reflected on his time at CSU and emphasized how working with RamRide shaped his experience at CSU, “It’s been an extremely valuable experience to work for RamRide. I think it’s a cool thing because it’s given me the ability to give back to the CSU Community,” said Walker. Walker mentioned that what he will miss most about CSU is the school spirit and close-knit network of students. “There’s a really cool sense of community at an institution like this,” said Walker. And Walker has truly touched the CSU community: he helps contribute to the 30,000+ rides RamRide gives each year to students in Fort Collins. His final takeaway: “be safe and take RamRide… and GO RAMS!”

HEALTHY LIVING AFTER COLLEGE PHYSICAL
It doesn’t necessarily become any easier after undergrad to make time for healthy eating and adequate exercise. Be sure to feed your body the fuel it needs so you can have the best possible foundation in place for a good day. This involves a varied diet created to meet your nutrition needs. It is best to see a registered dietitian to figure out what is best for your body. Part of giving your body what it needs includes staying hydrated, so keep a water bottle handy at all times. Consider swapping out sodas and sugary fruit juices for lemon and cucumber water instead. This reduces your sugar intake and keeps you more hydrated. Exercise can become a tedious task, especially if you are moving to a city. This doesn’t mean you can’t benefit from the positive effects of exercise. Be sure to create a regimen that works and is enjoyable for you. If you don’t like public gyms, find some indoor workouts online. If you hate lifting weights, try Pilates. The bottom line is that you’ve got to keep your body moving. Make sure you get plenty of sleep, you’re going to need it with all of those big opportunities ahead in postgrad life.
MENTAL
Tune in to how you feel each day. You may want to keep a journal or written record of your ups and downs so you can see any patterns associated with them. Understanding these patterns will give you a better chance at taking care of your mental health. Be sure to take breaks. I know that you probably didn’t hear this in your undergraduate career, but you do not have to be productive every day. You need some down time to manage stress and do the things that bring you joy. What is all of that work without a sense of being content anyway? It’s a great idea for some of us to find a mental health professional right after leaving CSU. While many see counseling as merely damage control, it can be a staple to maintaining your mental health. It allows you to process the things that effect you on a daily basis, before you overwhelmed by unprocessed feelings and emotions.

WHAT DO ALUMNI MISS MOST ABOUT CSU?
COURTNEY MEREDITH
SONJA LARA
Double Major: Journalism & Media Communications and Spanish
Major: Sociology Minor: International Development
My favorite part about being a student at CSU was the home I felt like I’d found. I think when you leave your hometown and you’re faced with balancing school, friends, work, etc. all at once, a crowded place can still feel pretty lonely. CSU’s atmosphere offered an uplifting, welcoming energy I’d never felt before and I always knew I’d have a home there forever with the memories I was creating. Honestly, I miss being on campus the most. It’s fun and amazing to be surrounded by people mostly your age, struggling with exactly what you’re struggling with, facing it all head on together and having fun while doing it (with the help of the weekends).
The one thing that I miss the most about CSU is the constant interaction with my friends and faculty. I didn’t realize how much I would interact with my peers on a daily basis. It was a very weird transition from going four years of being constantly surrounded by my friends and school work to a completely different environment at a “big girl” job. I don’t miss the school part with papers and exams but I really do miss having class with my friends and meeting new people throughout the semester. I didn’t realize how much I would miss grabbing lunch between classes or grabbing a beer at the Skeller after you complete a huge project. It’s a lot more effort and dedication to hanging out with your friends once you have graduated and you don’t think it will be this different.
Graduated: May 2016
Graduated: May 2017
SAM SCHECHTMAN
Double Major: Economics and Ecosystem Science and Sustainability Graduated: December 2017
The best part of CSU to me was how it focused heavily on its relationship with the environment. This is something that not only allowed for niche classes on specifics of environmental responsibility but also inspired me with the changes I can make in my life. Wanting to get into corporate responsibility, attending a university that made it a priority to minimize their impacts provided me with avenues that I could help businesses reduce their impact in a quantifiable manner. Separate from professional and academic interests, CSU provided me a place to be myself and come to terms with my sexuality in an open environment. I met friends who not only aligned with my interests but also supported me in difficult times and showed me that I was no different from the rest. I think CSU attracts people like my friends and it’s something that I greatly admire about the place. Somethings I miss about CSU is the meeting new people, being constantly in the know about new academic discoveries and the squirrels that eat out of your hands. 38| MAY 2018 | GRADUATION GUIDE

SELF-CARE PRACTICES
POST-GRAD LIFE CAN BE EVEN MORE STRESSFUL THAN COLLEGE. WHEN THE GOING GETS TOUGH, YOU’VE GOT TO TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF. CHECK OUT THESE SELF-CARE IDEAS. HANG OUT WITH FRIENDS, OR DON’T. Some of us need more social time, and others of us need less. Evaluate what’s best for you. Do you feel lonely or a little drained? Act according to what works best for you.
SPEND TIME DOING SOMETHING YOU LOVE. At times, we might be so wrapped up in our professional lives that we forget that we have hobbies and things we love to do. Take some time each day to do a little bit of something you love. After all, what’s all this work without some sense of contentment?
40| MAY 2018 | GRADUATION GUIDE
TAKE ONE MOMENT EACH DAY TO SAVOR. Whether it’s a cup of coffee or a quiet moment to yourself, the practice of savoring a moment a day will bring you back to the present.
WRITE DOWN THREE THINGS YOU ARE GRATEFUL FOR EVERY DAY. Practicing gratitude daily makes it easier to focus on the positives in life.

GRADUATION GUIDE | MAY 2018 | 43
GRADUATION TRADITIONS Tossing the Grad Cap • Tossing the graduation cap was started by the Naval Academy in 1912. Prior to 1912, the graduates were required to serve two years in the fleet as midshipmen before being commissioned, so they still needed their caps after graduation. Starting in 1912, however, graduates were immediately commissioned and received their officer hats, so they no longer needed their old caps. "Pomp and Circumstance” • “Pomp and Circumstance,” also known as “Land of Hope and Glory,” was written by Sir Edward Elgar in 1901. The title comes from a line in Othello that states, “Pride, pomp and circumstance of glorious war!” The catchy tune became associated with graduation when Sir Edward Elgar received a doctorate from Yale and the song was played at his graduation in honor of his accomplishment. Cap and Gown • The cap and gown tradition began in the 12th century when universities had no sufficient heating systems. Graduating students wore the cap and gown to stay warm during their graduation ceremonies.
