RAM

HISTORY & TRADITIONS HISTORY IN COLOR

CAM THE RAM

CAM's name stands for "Colorado Agriculture and Mechanical" College (the University's formal name)

I LOVE CSU DAY

Being a Ram here at CSU means dressing in green and gold for game day, but CSU’s colors used to be pumpkin orange and alfalfa green back when the University’s students were the Aggies.

On April 18, students at CSU celebrate their University with a “green out.” Games and events are held on the Lory Student Center Plaza and the governor of Colorado signs a proclamation declaring April 18 I Love CSU Day across Colorado!

FIGHT SONG

Fight on you stalwart Ram Team, On to the goal! Tear the (Opponent’s) line asunder, As down the field we thunder. Knights of the green and gold, Fight with all your might! Fight on you stalwart Ram Team, Fight! x3

THE OVAL

ALMA MATER

Hail to thee, our Alma Mater, Colorado State. Memories are everlasting of this place so great! May thy Green and Gold unite us, loyal ever be. Colorado State, our Alma Mater, Hail, all hail, to thee.

The Oval was designed in 1909 as a way to connect the main campus buildings. Surrounding the Oval are historic buildings including Johnson Hall, which was the original student center, and the Music Building, which was a library. It remains the heart of CSU and a favorite of all.

years of changes to campus

Nothing ever stays the same, and Colorado State University is no exception. Looking back through the last four years so many things made the campus change. Here are a couple of the changes that graduating seniors have been a part of:

Opening of Canvas Stadium

Construction on Canvas Stadium began in 2015 and finished just as this year’s graduating seniors arrived on campus. The first football game was held on Aug. 26, 2017, and the Rams beat Oregon State 58-27.

Opening of the Nancy Richardson Design Center

The Nancy Richardson Design Center opened in January 2019. It’s named after CSU alumna Nancy Richardson, who graduated from CSU in 1982 with a degree in interior design. It’s open to all CSU students and has been a great place for students to collaborate.

Tearing down Aylesworth Hall

Move from in-person classes to online classes

Spring break of 2020 was extended, but we would never have guessed that the time we spent in class before break would have been the last time we were in a classroom for a while. The coronavirus hit and across the world people were subjected to stay-at-home orders, this included colleges across America. Students and teachers started the long stretch of time with online learning.

Moved from online classes to in-person classes After a year of working remotely with other students and teachers’ online classes were (mostly) gone. Campus started to get the spark of students and teachers attending class in person. The library and the student center filled with students studying and wasting time between classes, life seemed to be getting back to normal.

Graduating seniors remember this building as classroom space, however, this building has had an evolving history on campus. Initially a residence hall from 1958-1970, Aylesworth became the go-to space for Joyce McConnell became the new CSU President various departments during times of need. The building was torn Joyce McConnell was introduced as the new Colorado State Univerdown at the start of this academic year to make way for a new sity president in 2019. She made history at CSU as the first woman residence hall community. president. McConnell took over after Tony Frank’s 11-year presidency, who is now the chancellor of the CSU system.

Opening of the Michael Smith Natural Resources Building When graduating seniors first got to campus this was a construction site. In August of 2018 Construction finished on the Michael Smith Natural Resources Building which was opened to students and faculty across campus. Around $20.2 million was invested into this building. It covers 50,000 square feet and is a reflection of the university's commitment to sustainability.

10 | FALL 2021

Colorado State University Lagoon got a makeover

Before the dreaded stay-at-home orders, you may remember the lagoon was blocked off with construction tape and was undergoing a renovation. The lagoon has been on campus since the 1960s and the renovations allowed faculty, staff and students to spend more time at the lagoon, with the addition of border seating along the edge.

Advice to new graduates You’ve graduated! You’re ready and excited to start living your life, getting your career you’ve always wanted and finally becoming an adult. But you may be a little lost, and that’s totally OK, everyone gets to that point in their transition from college to adulthood where they sit back and realize that they do not have it all together, so here’s some advice that everyone, even if you’re graduating or not, should listen to.

1. No one has it all together No one knows what they are doing. The people you looked up to when you were younger, the people you thought had it all figured out, have no idea what they are doing. It is OK to just wing it, no one is perfect.

2. You won’t get your dream job right out of college Yes, it’s great to think about graduating college and going straight into what you’ve always dreamed of doing, but that’s not the reality. It’s OK not to have the job you’ve always wanted right out of college, you have your whole life ahead of you to get there, just enjoy where you are at now.

3. Learn to say “no” For some people, saying no is not an issue, but for others, it can be impossible. You will learn quickly in your professional and personal lives that taking on too much is not healthy. You should learn how to say “no” when you know that saying “yes” will impact other parts of your life.

4. It’s OK not to know what you want to do Not everyone will graduate college and know exactly what they want to do with their lives. Surely you have been having this realization as you’ve gotten closer to your graduation date. Asking yourself “what am I supposed to do with my life,” is a natural thing that everyone does. Taking some time exploring different jobs can help you figure out what it is you want to do.

5. It’s OK to fail Everyone fails every once and awhile and failing just gives you an opportunity to learn and try again. People view 18 | FALL 2021

failing as something that is negative, but the one thing you should do is realize that failing is probably one of the best things you can do. This also means you should be open to criticism. Accepting that something you did wasn’t completely correct can help you in the long run learn and grow.

6. Learn to communicate Many people have learned good communication skills, but a lot still haven’t. Learning how to communicate well with other people will not only help you when speaking to potential bosses, but also in your personal life as well. Good communication skills are always key to understanding other people and helping them understand you.

7. Ask for help Asking for help can make some people feel like they sound like they don’t know anything. Asking for help just means that you’re open to learning new things. Not everyone knows everything and when you ask for help it shows that you want to learn the correct way to do things. This will also save yourself and other people a lot of time in the long run.

8. Make sure you take time for yourself You may have some more personal time after graduation. Going from being a full-time student with a job/internship to just

having a full-time job can be a little big of a shock. Take some time to yourself, whether that’s relaxing at home, going out with friends or working out, taking time for yourself can help your mental and physical health.

9. Continue learning Just because you have graduated college doesn’t mean you should stop learning new things. There are so many opportunities where you can continue your education without being in school. Again, not one person knows everything there is to know, so there are always new things to learn about.

10. Travel if you can No one ever said “Wow, I really regret taking that trip to Europe after I graduated.” Go see new places, learn new languages and cultures, eat different cuisines. You’re young and can go out and see the world, so why wouldn’t you?

Job Market

Q&A

Courtesy of Angela Hayes and the Career Center

Q: How long are the CSU Career Services available to me?

A: Forever! For up to one full year after you graduate, you can access all of the Career Center’s services exactly how you would during your time as a student. This includes drop-ins, appointments, and all events. After one year, you can still access many services. Go here for more information alumni.colostate.edu/career-services.

Q: If I don’t have an internship lined up yet, how can I search for opportunities now that I’m not on campus?

A: Employers who want to recruit CSU students and alumni post on Handshake, so always start your internship search with that site for postings, and check out FlexJobs.com for remote internships. Consider using about 3 websites for your search. You can also look at Google, internships.com, Indeed, or LinkedIn. Normal industry hiring timelines are currently affected, so expect delays as employers gather more information and/or move their hiring processes to virtual platforms. We are still offering internship search support through virtual drop-In’s and appointments.

Q: My employment offer was rescinded, what do I do?

A: Losing employment opportunities can be incredibly frustrating, exhausting, and scary, with serious implications to your immediate needs which can’t be taken lightly. Having an offer rescinded is often not your fault, and it may be good to know that rejection is difficult and will likely be more common as the economy is affected. With that in mind, as challenging as it may be, maintaining a relationship with an employer may be essential as they are managing uncertainty with hiring abilities and a shifting economy. By staying as positive and respectful as possible, and not sharing a negative perspective on social media, it will set you apart positively from other candidates when future opportunities may become available. Follow up with the employer by expressing your understanding, reiterate your interest, and ask if they anticipate future openings. If you don’t get a response, keep applying for internships and jobs until you have a position secured, looking at Handshake as a starting point. Also, consider talking with CSU Student Legal Services to review your job contract to see if there may be any leniency.

Q: How has the job market changed in the past year?

A: Many industries were impacted by COVID-19 making it tough for 2020 and 2021 graduates. The good news is employers plan to hire 26.6% more new graduates in 2022 than they did from the Spring Class of 2021, according to NACE’s Job Outlook 2022 report. With job openings exceeding 10 million graduates will have more opportunities. Find out more about hiring trends and predictions on the NACE (National Association of Colleges and Employers) website naceweb.org.

Q: Due to the current job market, I am unsure of my plans. What are ways I can continue to build my skills, if I don't obtain an internship this semester?

A: While internships provide an opportunity to explore a career field, as well as develop professional skills, there are additional ways to learn about career paths and develop the skills and competencies employers value. You might consider engaging in remote work, remote research projects, and/or volunteer to name a few. In addition, consider taking a free online course to develop skills or knowledge needed to prepare you for a role or to work in a particular industry.

Q: I’m worried about my future. How do I plan for my career in the face of all this uncertainty?

A: While some uncertainty is a part of everyday life in the best of times, our current situation brings up even more uncertainty and anxiety. Since none of us have control over what will happen and how long this will last, it’s best to focus on the things you can control. Here are more tips for dealing with uncertainty: nbcnews.com/better/ lifestyle/9-tips-deal-uncertainty-coronavirus-outbreak-ncna1167821. For example, you can control your own preparation and behaviors while exploring various career paths. Decide on your overall goals for career exploration, and then keep your focus on your next steps, and next steps after that, and so on. Keep moving forward. Continue researching different career paths, talking with alumni about their work, searching online for summer or new grad opportunities, revising your resume, tailoring your cover letters, and practicing interviewing. Reach out to the Career Center for support. These actions will give you a greater sense of control and certainty in this uncertain time.

Houseplants for your new home By Anna Jelden

Hose plants can be hard to care for, you water them too much they rot, you water them too little they dry out. Pothos

Pothos are beautiful plants that create long vines that hang out of the pot, which makes them great to have in a hanging pot. These need water every one to two weeks, and they do not do good in direct sunlight, so a window is not the ideal place for this one.

ZZ Plant

This plant will store water in its leaves so you can get away with watering it every couple of weeks. Just like the Pothos a window is not the best place for this, but rather somewhere where the sunlight hits in your home.

HOW TO ADULT after university

You graduated college and have your whole life ahead of you. But what are you supposed to do about the stuff you never thought about before? How are you supposed to be an adult? Here are some tips and tricks to get the ball rolling.

Network

Budget

First thing is first, you should know how to network. If you’ve ever heard the phrase “it’s not what you know it’s who you know,” then you know that your degree can only get you half of the way there. You need to start making your presence known to people in the fields you want to go into. Although it may not seem like it now, in the future, the connections you make when networking will help you find opportunities.

Clean up your social media TikTok, Instagram and Twitter are social media platforms that you have been using for a few years, so there has to be some things on there you might want to clean up. Believe it or not, employers do look at your social media presence, so making sure that some pictures are deleted could be a good idea.

There will be no more student refund checks, and rather student loan bills that you are going to be needing to figure out how to pay on your new salary. Budgeting is a great way to figure out what you can splurge on and what you should save for. You’ll be encountering bigger purchases in the next couple of years, so figuring out what you can and can’t spend money on will help you in the long run.

Learn to cook Learning to cook is a life skill everyone needs to work on. You want to learn more than heating up some pizza rolls in the microwave or boiling water for ramen noodles. Planning meals and being able to cook appetizing and healthy food at home is

great, plus it saves you a lot of money in the long run. Yes, this includes meal prepping.

Invest in Some Good Clothes Investing in some good clothes that you can wear to work or job interviews can help a lot after graduation. There will be no more rolling out of bed, putting on a new pair of sweatpants and strolling on over to class. Having a good couple of outfits you can wear to look a little more professional can help you not only look the part of an adult, but also feel it.

Get a Good Night's Sleep You’ll be missing the long nights where you stay up late to get an assignment in. It’s important for you to get a good night's sleep so you can get up in the morning and tackle the day you have ahead of you.
